    7:00 the guitar amplifier and fan thing is actually a problem that guitarists have often. The cord and the metal pole of the fan act as an antenna and the radio signal that is received in the amp is due to improper shielding. Single coil guitars like Fender Strats suffer from this a lot because of 60 cycle hum and poorly shielded cavities. There's more science to it than that and I can't explain it all but thats the jist of it. It will also pickup the hum from a neon light

    If you ever get a chance, try the pen and paper roleplaying game "Mage: the Ascension" or "Mage: the Awakening" (the latter being the newer edition, but I have only played the first one). You get to play a mage in our world, who is really capable of true magic - teleportation, fire evocation, time travel or creating a human. But his greatest adversary is the communal belief system that shuns magic - you have to carefully navigate the world not to draw too much attention from technocratic mage hunters, envious werewolves, scheming vampires, spirits from the mirror worlds or reality itself. It's great.

    All wiring and lengths of metal will pick up radio signals with some being more electrically resonant than others depending on their length. The Jack plug is made of a different metal to the pole stand and as he touched it to the pole, it formed what’s called a point contact diode which will have the ability to rectify amplitude modulated radio waves from a strong nearby source. The resulting rectified energy is fed into the amplifier and hence, you can hear the audio. It is the two dissimilar metals that touch that cause this phenomenon to happen. Early crystal radios used a “cat’s whisker” wire whose end touched a germanium crystal to achieve this effect.

    The reason the Queen Elizabeth one works is because it uses inverted colors. The colors temporarily “burn” into your vision and when you blink, it reveals the image more clearly. It’s the same idea that happens when you see spots in your vision after looking at a bright light source, the only difference is it’s utilizing colors and not just bright white light

  • @curtishoffmann6956
    @curtishoffmann6956 2 года назад +10

    For the lights circuit, the easiest trick is to use a simple controller in the base to always light the lamps/LEDs in the same sequence all the time. That is, no matter what switch you throw, red turns on first, then blue, then green, etc. So, if you move the caps around, it doesn't matter. Just throw whatever switch has the red cap, and the red LED will look like it's turning on because of the cap.

    • @I.____.....__...__
      @I.____.....__...__ 2 года назад +2

      He lit them differently. The first time was yellow, green, red, blue, the second time was blue, red, yellow, green.
      There might be a differently-valued resistors inside the caps. 🤔

    • @Tyler-yy5ds
      @Tyler-yy5ds 2 года назад

      @@I.____.....__...__ The resistors was my thought. If you used, say, 1 ohm, 2 ohm, 4 ohm, and 8 ohm resistors, you could use their additive resistance to determine which gates had been closed, with a board underneath to decode them and light the appropriate lights.
      That said, that's a pretty technically heavy way to do this. It's probably more of a sleight.

    • @curtishoffmann6956
      @curtishoffmann6956 2 года назад

      @@I.____.....__...__ My system could still work. Just have the controller run on different, simple patterns each time. The problem with having components in the cap is how you're going to ensure you're making electrical contact with each one.

    • @phoolb7326
      @phoolb7326 2 года назад +1

      I built a very similar trick a long time ago where I could change the light or the switch and the color would track. I won't say how mine was done, but it was not that complicated and it didn't rely on any sequence although all of the suggestions below could be used.

    Pretty sure the fan is acting as a simple radio tower, accepting the local radio stations waves. When you're super close to an actual high-powered transmission tower, if you have metal fillings in your teeth, you can actually hear the radio by opening your mouth. It's pretty crazy. Electricity does weird stuff, but really cool stuff.
    EDIT: By the way, this is a gross oversimplification that I made just to get a general point across and isn't meant to be taken straight as-is. There are plenty of scientific documentation online of the phenomenon, so please, look up more if you're interested.

      Basically when that kid touches the guitar cable to the fan, he’s creating a ground loop that includes the amp, the fan and the electrical system in the house. That big loop acts like a giant antenna. The same thing happens to me with a couple different fuzz pedals I have at my apartment and is a common issue with certain circuits like fuzz faces.

    • @I.____.....__...__
      @I.____.....__...__ 2 года назад

      No, it's not acting like an antenna, the long cable would already be acting like an antenna if that were the case and should be making the radio pick up _something,_ and even if it wasn't, the radio should be playing _static._ He simply cut an audio cable and used the fan as a conductor, making it part of the cable.

    • @_wanderingrocks_
      @_wanderingrocks_ 2 года назад

      @@I.____.....__...__ It absolutely is acting like an antenna. A simple google search will pull up hundreds of articles and forum posts about the hows and whys and what to do to eliminate it. I pick up a local radio station loud and clear with certain fuzz pedals that have poor shielding which is amplified when I unplug my guitar and ground the end of the cable against something metal or even my body.

    Have you seen the jazz pianist in RUclips Charles Cornell? You remind me a lot of him. A lot. Like you could be brothers.

    i had the same problem with my speakers as the kid with the amp did, but for me it did it when it touched the metal radiator that was in my room and i guess because i live quite close to a large radio tower, the radiator picked up its signal

    12:12 it could also be the order in which the switches are used.

      He threw them in different orders: 3, 4, 2, 1, then 2, 3, 4, 1. The order of the switches differed, the order of the caps differed, and the order of the lights differed. It's probably not a trick, the caps probably have a resistor inside which has different values, so the lights light up based on the (probably cumulative resistance) of the circuit. No tricks required. Maybe I'll throw one together when I have some free time.

    I remember doing that spining the table with your feet thing with a laundry basket after we saw one of the traveling Asian circuses we were little. My Mom got so mad at me for it but I got pretty good.

      I would assume it uses iron filings and magnets. Something like an Etch-a-sketch. If you're looking to buy one I have no clue.

      It's a custom build, just iron fillings and electro magnets behind. Wasn't meant to be magic, just weird.
