- First Rodney King, then Latasha Harlins. UCLA historian Brenda E. Stevenson, in the "Patt Morrison Asks" column, talks about her new book, "The Contested Murder of Latasha Harlins," the case that also undergirds the 1992 riots.
The fact is that this young lady went into this store everyday for years. The husband knew this young lady and that the girl always had her money, exact change in her hand-got her chips and drink-went up to the counter paid and left. This was routine. BUT, the husband took a break, and left his wife in charge who thought the young lady was stealing and killed her.
What angered the African American public is that the jury found the Korean lady guilty of manslaughter and recommend prison time of not less than 10 years. it was the judge that reduced her sentence to community service and a fine.
After the acquittal of the police officers who was seen beating Rodney King get off after viewing tape of the incident, the community reacted.
This shop keeper couldn't possibly think they were going to continue with business as usual.
I would have found Du not guilty on all charges.

I actually work at a grocery where alot of beggars surround and ive dealt with many thieves that literally put products in pockets or bags and come to the cashier to make it seem like they pay and then take another walk around then run 💀
As soon as someone puts an unpaid product into their clothes or bags, it needs to be suspected of theft. Im not taking the korean women's side but just telling you my experience

And another fun experience:) i confronted a 12- 15 year old kid for stealing an ice cream so she slammed it against my head and ran off. I had to get stitches, thank god i have good normal customers whod watch the shop for a good 5 minutes as i ran after thiefs

At the time of the comment I thought she just stole and tried taking advantage of the women but it's clean in the actual security monitor that she just shot her for no reason.
Perhaps the worst miscarriage of justice I have ever seen. The video tape clearly shows Harlins went to counter to pay for the orange juice. It is the clerk who illegally grabbed the girls bag. Harlins defended her property put the Orange juice on the counter turned her back on the clerk and walked toward the door. The clerk shot her in the back of the head. Harlins died with the $2 in hand that she attempted to use to by the juice. The woman that shot her served no time even though she was convicted.
+BillyProulx, yes, the judge commuted the sentence, but Du was attacked, and that is how she probably saw and considered it when making her ruling.
Give me a break. Du illegally grabbed the girls backpack. The girl defended it and then Du shot her in the back of the head while she was trying to leave the store without the orange juice. Murder 2, at least.
BillyProulx, no, Du had reason to believe that a crime was committed. Tash should have taken the product straight to the counter and not hold it in a manner that would draw any suspicion. Regardless of the babble about the details, the judge made her ruling... And the decision was final.

Regardless of what happened, Latasha Harlins didn't deserve to get shot in the back of the head. The poor girl didn't know that a bullet to the back of her head would end her young life. As Harlins laid dead on the floor investigators found the money (that was for the orange juice) in her hand. The killer and her husband were Asian immigrants who came to America to suck the money from a marginalized people's community.
Michael Cooper, some have said that the whole incident was clearly "Asian-bashing" at its worst.
Imagine your life being taking away because you wanted orange juice. I hope the korean lady gets her real punishment. Rip Latasha Harlins

@@quinoa32 Latasha would have been 45 next month. The Empire Market was burned down during the LA riots, but that woman deserved to go to jail. A jury came back with a guilty verdict and recommended 16 years. And judge Joyce Karlin considered her to not be a threat and reduced the sentence. She sympathized with her being scared because if previous robberies. That still makes no sense to me. She shot a girl in the back of her head as she was walking away. There is no excuse or justification for that. And we all know had the races been reversed, she would have seen the black person as a threat to society and increased the sentence. Even today, judges sentence a black girl who was a sex trafficking victim to 51 years for killing a violent john in self defense. We have a black woman getting jailed for years because she unknowingly voted while on parole, despite getting assurances from her lawyer and the voting agency that it would be alright.

Since when do a judge sympathize with a murderer and not the victim? The young girl was mistaken for a thief. I lived in South Central LA in 1991. I always wonder why will they start a business in a neighborhood if they did not like the people. As a kid you couldn't buy a candy bare without being followed.

Jay Santos Like I said, I don't recall her ever saying that. And besides, that Korean lady started it when she grab her sweatshirt. What was she supposed to do? Just take it? No, you'll fight back. Harlins was a known customer at that particular store, but Soon wasn't a regular clerk; her husband and her son know Latasha so that's why Latasha put her orange juice in her bag because they know she was going to pay them. However, they were not present at the time and Soon had to cover for her husband and she made a rash decision and grabbing her sweatshirt. I'll say as soon as the altercation stops and she started to walk away out of the store, it is no longer self-defense. Just my opinion.

If she truly stole the orange juice, then why did she have two dollars in her hands, with the intent to pay for the orange juice? Her two dollars was still in her hands when she was shot. So if she has that intent to pay, then she did not steal. You just want to make her out as a bad person when everyone else, even the police, said that she did not stole. Like I said, they did have a confrontation, but Soon grabbed her sweatshirt first and again, when someone grabs your shirt, you are not going to take it very lightly. I think even Soon would admit that she made a mistake by prejudging her. And again, there is really no evidence that she threaten her afterward. NO matter what, it still did not warranted her being shot in the head, especially when she was walking out of the store after the confrontation.

1. She was going to pay but Soon thought she was stealing and grab her shirt instead. No one truly knows what happen except Latasha and Soon and we only get to hear Soon's side of the story. But after looking at the case, I don't think Latasha had any intent to steal. If she did, she wouldn't have money in her hand in the first place.
2. I also understand that the store was hit wit strings of robbery so I understand why Soon, who was not being a regular cashier, would somehow fear of being rob as she was not prepare. I also believe that she made a rash decision and prejudged Harlins, who was a regular in that store. Even the police says that she prejudged her.
3. While I agree that she should not have put that orange juice in the bag, at the same time, Soon should not have pull her sweatshirt. It was not needed. She should've taken her picture and put it in the wall like so many storeowners have done and ban her from that store. Or even if sh thought she was stealing, she should've call the police. But like I said, as soon as she was walking away from the store, there was no need to pull the trigger, even if Harlins "threatened" her, which there was no evidence of. So I could've easily said, had Soon not pull her sweatshirt and not pull the trigger, Harlins would've been alive. Harlins was not carrying anything but two dollars and she was only using her fist so at the time, there was no need for her to pull a gun. All I know is that this was completely unnecessary, but Soon is more to blame than Harlins was.
4. No one ever said she was an angel, but according to her friends she was a churchgoing girl who encourages her friends and family to go to church with her. They never said she gotten into fights with anyone in school. I don't know where you got that she was in fights. And as for she "threatened" her, we might never know if she really did. It is a merely a she said/she said. We don't truly know what she said. All I know from the video tape is Soon grabbed her, Harlins punched back, which the defense states she hit hard, and as she was leaving, she was shot dead. Like I said, there was no need for her to shot her at all It was an error on Soon's part and she should've been punish for it. But hey, believe what you want.
5. Lastly, you said you would've put the merchandise back; that is exactly what she did. She put it down and walk away after the altercation.
Jay Santos Did I say it was "peacefully"? I admit there was a confrontation and I even admit she should not have put the orange juice in her bag. I believe this was an honest mistake. I also said, and even you have to admit it, that Soon should not have pull her sweatshirt. If she did not pull her sweatshirt, Harlins wouldn't be punching her. That is what the video camera also showed you.
I don't think believe this was first-degree murder, but it was definitely not self-defense. If it truly was, the judge would've acquitted her of all judge. IF anything, I would say this is manslaughter because once she walked away from the situation, even after the confrontation, there was no need for her to pull the trigger, especially when Harlins did not have any weapon on her on sight.
But that's not the argument. The argument here is she should've spent at least few years in prison because it was a manslaughter. But instead, she was serve probation. There are those in prisons who are serving more times for a bag of weed. Not even distributing, just carrying a bag of weed. That is why many people felt that it wasn't justice.
If the Korean merchants don't like blacks then they shouldn't like their money. Boycott and do what everyone else has done, buy from your own people.
sandinyourshoes There reaches a point where if two groups of people don't respect and can't play nice with each other then they need to separate. There seems to be a big cultural gap between merchants and customers. There are black you tubers who say blacks need to pool their own money and create their own businesses. Was done before. Black Wall Street in Tulsa prior to rioting whites destroyed it. I know for a fact that whites or anyone for that matter would not tollerate rude treatment by merchants they were giving their money to. If the Koreans don't like blacks they should have never set up shop in black neighborhoods.

Du shouldn’t have grabbed latasha. Working retail we are told if someone is stealing don’t confront them, tackle, grab etc. so when du grabbed latasha of course she was going to defend herself. They got into a confrontation. Latasha put the orange juice on the counter and was walking away. In my honest opinion when Du shot her that was no self defense. How could it be. Latasha was walking away. The confrontation was over and latasha was leaving. Smh

This video is making a propaganda that Latasha behaved 'peaceful' in that shop. You should have watched a full camera record. Latasha hit the owner for 3 times with her fist and the owner would felt extreme fear. Even the owner's act(shooting a gun at a person who turned back) is wrong, that doesn't means that Latasha is perfectly innocent and shop owner is pure evil. If you are suspicious for what I have said, check the full camera record for this incident.

Even if the owner did feel threatened, there wasn't any legitimate threat that could make the argument of self defence valid. The only one who acted in self defence was Latasha - defended herself against a woman who accused her falsely and initiated violence.

This doesn't show the whole clip. That lady pulls on Latasha's sweater, Latasha fights back, lady let's go and throws something at her, gets the gun. Latasha gives the lady the juice, turns to leave and that lady shoots her. That lady knew the moment that she got hit that she was going to shoot Latasha. This was murder period. Latasha was going to pay and then she walked away.

I’ll never forget her. We were only three years between each other when she died. My youngest sister tried to trump me on the topic but she was only a four or five years old at the time so having a conversation with her about any of the events back then is a waist of time. Can’t believe they only made a 19 minute special on Netflix. A lot that happened back then is inner twined and all should be discussed fully because it still happens in present time always beginning with a trip to a store (for cigarettes, Apple juice, skittles, lottery tickets etc) . I’m serious, if your not old enough to recollect and if your not mature enough to absorb what people have to say or what they feel who actually are old enough and lived in those atmospheres, it’s better you don’t speak on those things at all. Latasha deserves more than a 19 minute film. The shortest runtime I’ve seen. The average runtime is an hour and twenty something minutes. Her murder and the Rodney king verdict were what fueled the riots. We moved from my grandmother’s, a couple of my aunts also because of the atmosphere at the time. We lived in the actual hood, not the gentrified shit. It’s like listening to a fool say time square was always neat and filled with flatscreen TVs or Central Park is a lovely place to go jogging at sundown.

Then the lady accused her of it and grabbed Latasha’s backpack, which she had no right to do, therefore Latasha punched the lady 3 times to get her off her then putting the juice down and trying to leave the store. Then the lady got her gun and killed a 15 year old because of her thinking she was stealing, even though she wasn’t, leading to the death of someone’s child and riots. There was so much violence during this time. Korean store owners were harassed beaten stolen from and murdered by violent gang members back then. When people fought in SC Los Angeles. People knew guns were coming out. Most teens guys and girls were gang members. The shop owner got angry and scared- it’s terrible what happened. Violence breeds more violence and making excuses for any color of person is unacceptable. I came of age during this. Both the govt and people have to do their part in correcting these issues. Seeing as though the teen was a regular the store owner could’ve notified the police and locked the door until they came if she was trying to steal. She put it in her bag because she had done numerous times at that store. Get her juice, put it in the bag and bring the exact total to the counter to pay and leave. It might seem strange to you but it's not uncommon at small stores. The killer's husband obviously had no problem with it.

When you are violent you are often met with violence. Do many of these people deserve to lose their lives? Absolutely not. Are people who assault others and attack police more likely to get killed? Absolutely! I’ve been pulled over and gotten tickets and never been assaulted because I don’t fight with the police and I don’t do drugs or have outstanding warrants. I’ve had a gun pulled on me and de-escalated the situation. Had I charged the guy I’d probably be dead. People need to make better choices. Violent people are met with violence. As an Asian American, I have to say the most racist experiences I've ever encountered were from black people. They hated Asians with a passion here in the south where I grew up. I went to a high school with mostly whites and when a large population of African americans started going to that high school, Asiand became the target of racial slurs and kung fu yells.
