Jim actually wrote this for his new born son, whom was less than 2 years old when Jim died in the plane crash. I vividly remember when Jim died. He was my favorite solo artist at the time, and frankly still is to this day. He created the most beautiful music. Very sad.

Croce wrote it for his infant son. He realised that he was often far away from home touring and feeling homesick, and wanted to spent more time with his family. And yep who knows, he may have had some premonition of his passing. He has more great songs: I Have To Say I Love You In A Song, Operator, Lover’s Cross, I’ve Got A Name, New York’s Not My Home, Working At The Carwash Blues, and more.

There's nothing sadder than hearing an artist of this caliber who was taken from us so young singing about their limited time to do things. It's Crow-chee. Accent on the first syllable It's Italian. When the 'c' is followed by a consident, the 'c' is pronounced as a 'k'. But when it's followed by a vowel, the 'c' is pronounced as 'ch'. The name 'Croce" has both types of 'c'.
He was a wonderful singer, gone much too early. A timeless song.

He sadly passed while his son was still very young. There is an interview with his adult son where he mentions in his own music career it took him to his later years before he could even bare to play it. He sings it now at his concerts in tribute to his father.

Not only did he die when he was 30, but most of his hits were discovered posthumously, and you are 💯% correct about how it was weird, him writing this song, telling his wife how she makes him feel and how she completed him. This was his last #1 hit and was written just before he died, but wasn't released (as a single) until after he died.

The guitarist is Jim's friend Maury Muehleisen. Maury's guitar playing added so, so much to Jim Croce's songs. They say that the two of them were both going to try to make it big, with the other to back up his musical partner. Once people heard Jim's raspy folksinger style, Jim's career took off, while Maury played guitar for Jim. Maury put out a little known album titled Gingerbreadd. It can be found on RUclips. Maury had a softer voice than Jim, but the album Gingerbreadd is a gem. Listen to: A Song I Heard, Wintry Morning, Elena, That's What I Like, One Last Chance, and I Have No Time. You will be pleasantly surprised!

Imagine the heartbreak of the one left behind by a love that created such beauty for them.

I was just a kid, but I still recall waking up that morning in September 1973 and hearing on the radio that Jim Croce had died. He was really a great talent...and he is missed to this day.

Another one to check out is "I Got a Name". There have been too many artists who died way to soon, but when I heard about him, it took my breath away. A lot of us grieved the loss of his smooth baritone voice that could portray fun lighthearted songs or soul reaching melodies that could make you cry with him. At least we had him for a while.

60’s and we’ll into the 70’s had a huge number of successful singer songwriters.

So lovely. It seems when we lose singer/songwriter who is a poet it grabs our heart. They have shared their heart with us snd we still yearn for more. John Denver is another. Sigh…

I am watching this on my dad's birthday. He loved Jim Croche, and this song was the one Mom played at Dad's funeral in 2012. Jim Croche will always hold a special place in my heart. I don't think Mom can listen to this song anymore, which is very sad. She also loves Jim Croche's music. My favorite is "I've Got a Name".

My daddy, uncle, even a brother played and sang, 12 string has such beautiful harmony... we lost so many Greats back then...
