After my previous comment from 2021, when my plein air workshop was canceled, I finally used the SoHo Scout Pochade in a plein air workshop in France (2022): I loved it! But: the 2nd day the piece that attaches to the tripod broke, I had to fix it and add washers to the metal plaque; during my 8 day painting trip, the side of the palette tray detached, the peg that holds the palette tray and drawer opening fell on the grassy ground, and the stopper of the fold out tray fell on top of my paint when I closed it to transfer to another painting site. I hope the design and final manufacturing steps of quality control are improved on a next version.
Thank you for this video: I just purchased the scout after having used the pochade since 2017. I thought they were the same except for the canvas holder space. I was surprised when i opened the scout, to see the differences in design. I have a plein air trip coming soon (from Jessica Henry) and I wanted to have the lighter version. Knowing the acrylic palette is not for oils, I will use the wood one.
My brush holder kept falling off, put two hook & loop (velcro) dots with adhesion on the top of the tray. together with the magnets the brush holder stays on.
I teach acrylic painting classes and wanted a box that would pretty much hold all my supplies I bought the larger box. I would have liked to have more space (deeper) for 3oz. & 5oz. tubes. and forego the storage space for canvas A shallow drawer (in that space) would have been great for brushes, rulers and other flat things. I will also try clamping (Velcro) a glass palette to the board provided.

I'm an oil painter, thinking about doing watercolor outside. So, how does that work? Do you remove the brass fittings and turn them out? Does that change the angle of the lid?
Thank you: useful.
We're so glad you found it helpful! 😀
I have the scout and replaced the locking mechanism and the hinges with tension hinges so the top lays flat for watercolor pad/block.
I'm trying to find one that works for watercolor. If I may ask what brand did you use and where did you aquire the hinges?

I have the larger box and my only gripe is I would like to see stronger magnets on the two pieces that have magnets.

Do u have to purchase the heavy duty tri pod or can any tripod can do the job ?
We recommend the heavy duty, but it is a universal mount, so any tripod that is *very stable* would work!
do the guerrilla!
I have the scout box and use it on my lap closed with the brass fittings pointed out instead of in the box. It works great for watercolor

Can I use any tripod or do I have to use a special one? Thanks
