  • Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie was present at France’s 3rd Night of Ideas, with a quite memorable moment when the interviewer asked if there were any libraries in Nigeria, adding that French people didn’t know a lot about Nigeria. Adichie answered saying she felt the question reflected poorly on French people.

For a French woman to say, as if, an author has.no libraries or book stores in her country. As if Africa is torn! A French person can only see, or has a vision of Africa being a poor country that needs France’s help. She said it with a slight giggle too! I’m proud that the author was able to answer her back as she did. Isn’t it ashamed that White people only see their demise-people of color are multiplying in large quantities & White (pure) people are almost becoming extinct that they can’t admit that people of color have a brain & are not lazy as White people have said. This is only the true side of White people being jealous!

You know, ignorance is a source of all kind of discrimination, not just group discrimination. We do that with people we barely know, assuming things.
And one thing is having stereotypes from ignorance, other is perpetuating them with malevolence intent.
People like you, shouting "racism", don't seem to understand that doing that is counterproductive.
You, like everyone on earth, is not knowledgeable in all things, and to fill that lack of knowledge our brain makes a simplified version of what we don't know (ya know, stereotypes). That doesn't mean in the slightest that that person is racist or transphobic or hates a certain group or whatever. And if you punish or humiliate someone who is putting forth these stereotypical questions you're missing a good opportunity to actually improve their knowledge on the subject, and contributing on making a positive change for the world. Most people take this approach well. But of course, there's stupid people everywhere.
But of course, in the context of this interview, the interviewer is just incompetent.
But nonetheless, generalizing a fucking country and labeling millions of people as covert racists is just plain stupid.
Bet you got a rush up there from your moral high ground, hem?

I'm a fijian (Pacific islander) and even we study Nigerian authors like the late Chinua Achebe's "Things Fall Apart". For it's a window into our history as well....as a former colony of the British empire. Am a huge fan of hers cos she is the epitome of what it means 'the empire has written back'. At the end of the day our ancestors would be proud of us....for not only can we read, write and think in the lines of our own people but we can do the same with that of our once oppressors. And to crown it all....they're pretty much scared that we can do so with eloquence. Kudos to all of us who had a history that motivated us to stand tall and proud and not allow such misinformed individuals to speak down on our people and motherland but hold them accountable for failing to see what they so obviously choose to ignore. I guess ignorance isn't a bliss afterall!

@@babydoll6280 That’s also possible. Maybe she was just being racist.
I saw it as ignorant because it is likely that the interviewer knew that who she was interviewing isn’t just anybody, but is actually very high profile. She’s likely to have done her research on Chimamanda, and if she did she must have known that she would ‘finish’ her with her words if she intentionally tried to insult her or anything of importance to her. Also in a conference like that, to be outright racist isn’t so common, especially in the company of whom she was in. Racism is usually indirect in such settings. She also seemed embarrassed or ashamed afterwards, but that’s just my interpretation of the situation.

Wow! Chimamanda Adichie not only speaks well and is literate, she is bold and courageous also. Look at the expression on the interviewer's face as Chimamanda answers her ridiculous questions. The interviewer is deeply embarrassed. It's possible that someone told the interviewer what questions to ask and the interviewer obliged by asking condescending questions. The interviewer will never forget the humiliation she felt listening to Chimamanda's succinct answers. A very nice video indeed. Let's hope that the interviewer learnt some lesson from this interview.
