Yamaha A5M ARE - Acoustic Review

  • Yamaha's A series electro-acoustics might not get the attention of some of the top American makers but they really deserve consideration if you're looking for a player's guitar says Ben Morgan-Brown
    Yamaha A5M ARE
    So ubiquitous and successful are Yamaha's lower priced acoustic guitars that it may be tempting just to think of this maker in that context. This would be a mistake because Yamaha has decades of experience making top-end acoustic guitars too and its instruments have been played by some of the finest acoustic guitar players in the business at one time or another.

    You may get some satisfaction from showing off all your mics by hanging them on the wall, but the proper thing to do is to always store mics in their cases and never leave them out overnight. They gather dust, the dust becomes conductive, and things go south from there. Neumann techs site people who leave mics out as the #1 cause of mic failure over time.

      @@chrisk5056 the A5M is balanced nicely. A bit warmer and present midrange than the A5R. I recall the A5R having a more rich bass tone. For accompanying a singer, the A5M would be good for a tenor or bass. I'd recommend the A5R for a baritone singer. That way the instrument doesn't overpower the singer. The big thing for me was the mic model as I plug in almost always. I prefer the small diaphragm condenser mic model on the A5M.

    Really interested in this model, but one BIG concern / question: looking inside the sound hole there's a huge exposed circuit board for the electronics. How is that going to hold up to humidifying the guitar? Will humidity easily corrode it? Are preamps from other manufacturers more sealed than this, or is such exposure standard?

    04/20/2021: Great Review. I own the Yamaha A3R cutaway and it sounds great, per very loud with light strumming, warm deep lows, and bright trebles. However, I was wondering if you could do a comparison of the A5R cutaway to the A3R cutaway. They seem very similar, except for A3R is a little bigger-sized top and comes with a soft case. The A5R is a little smaller body but deeper than A3R and comes with the hardshell case. Excluding the cases, would it be worth trading in my A3R and getting an A5R? Which one would I get a better tone?

    Any thoughts on a Yamaha A5R versus a Larrivee LV-03RE? Different price points, but as a gigging guitar, these are the two I'm considering, and I've traditionally been a fan of Yamahas bang for buck especially, with the torrified top. That being said, I'm also a huge fan of the Larrivee neck/playability, but the electronics do seem to be slightly lackluster with an LR Baggs Element StagePro.

      The srt mic models for rosewood models are ribbon mic and large diaphragm condenser, for mahogany you get ribbon mic and small diaphragm condenser. Acoustic tone of A5R is terrific. Big bass, bright trebles. Moderately scooped mids. I owned an A5R but sold it because I wasn't blown away with the large diaphragm condenser mic model.

    I have an FG830 and have ordered an FG5 (delivery after May 1). I complain about the "wire" Yamaha uses on their fretboard. The coating on these wires oxidizes and leaves a black line on my finger tips. I thought Yamaha would use some other technique (better wire?) with the FG5 but it looks the same. For the longest time I could not figure out where this black residue was coming from but a close look at the contact point (when pressed on) between strings and the fretboard dividers showed the cause.The ends of the wire on the fretboard can also be a bit sharp. Big mistakes on otherwise quality instruments (well the FG5 at least) If you are not happy with the design and feel of the fretboard,well you have a decision to make as no one (that I know)spends money on fretboard upgrades, on a new guitar. I do so love the sound from the FG5 though.

    • @danr5105
      @danr5105 3 года назад +1

      @@Tigerex966 Hi Tiger. yes. The "problem" is easily fixed by simply cleaning the fretboard. I think the "some people experience the problem some don't" is dependent upon just what is in your sweat (yuck) I can run a microfiber sponge down the strings every 3 days and the residue will heavily stain the sponge. I wipe my guitar bodies/necks down before and after every session,why not the fretboard? Lots of dead skin on the fretboard (double yuck)

    Hi Ben, I'm having a little bit of a dilemma. Today I put a deposit on a very lightly used A5M. It's practically mint.
    Unfortunately I am stuck between a new Martin D 10e. Unfortunately the 10e does not have a cutaway, which helps me favour the A5M.
    I have gotten the A5M down to 1150 CAD, and the 10e is 1099 CAD new.
    Any insight that could help me choose my guitar?

    • @AcousticReview
      @AcousticReview  3 года назад +1

      Hi Luke - well the obvious answer is to play both if you can and choose the one that 'speaks' to you, but that might be hard at the moment! Although it's been a while since I played both those guitars, looking back at my reviews I don't believe there's an obvious 'winner' when comparing them.
      If the cutaway is important to you then that might be the deciding factor? Sorry I couldn't be more help! Ben

    I'm not impressed with the sound of the guitar, it certainly lacks low end and it's generally flat without overtones like in a mono rather than stereo sound (I compare it to Eastman AC322CE which is similar in the specs) , and if you stop the video at 1:40 and take a look at the fitting of the nut which doesn't look like Japanese craftsmanship, it questions the overall quality of the instrument.
