I saw a video where the 1998 French national team were talking about defending Ronaldo before the World Cup Final. They said from there experiences of playing him previously, they would some time lose the ball or the ball would “disappear” between his feet when he did those step overs. It’s a move used quite often but no one could really do it as good as him.

Brother I grew up watching Ronaldo, and all the greats over the last 25 years. Peak for peak, prime for prime R9 is the greatest I've ever seen. You compared him to Lebron James, he's more like a MJ, Lebron hybrid. Size and strength of Lebron, with the skills, fundamentals, technique, speed, and grace of Jordan.

They’re relatively easy to do when the ball is not moving. Doing it while running at full speed, that’s another story.

I had this argument with somebody not long ago. When comparing dribbling at speed with Cristiano he would not accept that at top speed, R9 visibly has more control over the ball. The ball never seems to go more than about 1 metre in front of him, Cristiano is taking far bigger touches to help maintain his speed

Regarding step overs, there are many players that do it. Some do it better than others. R9 was very good, robinho and Cristiano Ronaldo were others that were very good as well. As a defender it's hard to keep up. He may do 1 step over, he may do 5, you just don't know. That's why they always fall behind once he takes off. It's the unpredictability that stumps defenders
R9, Zidane, Ronaldhino played around the same time. Hard to say who was the best. But R9 should not be at that level after all those injuries. Just shows what a player he was.
