I am so happy to see someone do this idea. It really is interesting going season by season seeing how different it’ll be if the playoffs were implemented.
2004, my favorite year of NASCAR, the year Rockingham left, the first year of a new title sponsor, Dale Jr's best season, red hot young guns, a new points system. One of the last great seasons of NASCAR imo. 2005 and 2011 were good as well as 2014 but the sport has regressed since the first season of the elimination style of points has come into play.
@@jordanrobson3166 yep, nobody is pleased anymore, my guy. If I were to tell those people who bitch about NASCAR being "boring" because everything was fair and non-gimmickal, I would say "if you find NASCAR boring, just don't watch it. But do not let NASCAR change what it's not. We do not want NASCAR as a stick and ball sport or WWE. Let racing be racing. If you don't like it, don't watch." I am hoping NASCAR will be a racing sport like it's suppose to be and not all that WWE and ball sport crap.
@@IanTheMotorsportsMan_YT that's it. People complained Kenseth won with just 1 win. The logical solution would be to increase the points gap between first and second like F1 did back in 2010. Bun no. Nascar went for the Chase, and ratings and attendance show it wasn't the way to go
@@Ofitus21 NASCAR should've kept their standings and everything original. Brian France kept turning it into a ball sport. As for the fans, be careful what you wish for, or else you won't be pleased :/
I can't even imagine how much work goes into this series. How and where would you get the running orders for stages all year. Then adding the points. YOWIE WOWIE
Dale Jr did it on network TV and Denny did it on cable TV. Big difference. Also, Dale Jr’s deal that was less than a year after the Janet Jackson accident at the super bowl so all TV networks were pretty strict on what was said or seen on TV
That is a heck of a Champion 4 right there. And that would've been an insane finish for the title too. I'm glad you're doing this! This is a really cool idea! Looking forward to more of this
2017-2018 with 2016 chase would be good , and for me 2004 chase points in 2015 (my father recommended that one) Edit:btw good video , big fan , watch the podcast :)
As far as thoughts of the season I can only speak to the playoffs but man it rocked. When I finished one race I found myself excited for the next one like I would a show on Netflix. And that’s with being a huge fan at the time as well as now.
This is going to be a great series. Love these kinds of "what if" videos. However, I am very glad the playoffs didn't exist in 2004. While I always prefer the Winston Cup format, the original Top 10 Nextel Cup Chase format was just fine in my book as well. Great video! Can't wait to see the next one!
I remember that Homestead race. Gordon's expressions after the race, he was pissed he knew he had more total points for the year but no title to show for it.
In P1 Motorsports’ Breaking the Chase series @ 8:10: “Even though Johnson made that three wide pass, it would not be enough. Jeff Gordon would clinch his fifth championship in 2004 by 47 points over Jimmie Johnson and 148 over Dale Earnhardt Jr. Kurt Busch would lose his one and only championship without the Chase, but would still finish 4th in the standings 247 points back.”
@@diychad7268 The major problem is you can do a good job overall, but with a 3 straight races going bad you get out of champioship. Which it was what happened with Kurt Busch. It is not fair, motorsport you can have some problems any race, like, for example, Hamilton race today on F1.
Been working on this same project! I started in 2000 and just finished the 04 season. So far Bobby was the 2000 and 01 champion Kurt Busch was the 02 champ and Jimmie won it in 03
It funny to see how big Biffle's move was at Homestead on the restart in the actual championship fight. If Johnson gets by Biffle, we are talking about Johnson winning it over Busch possibly. I like this idea. Funny how Mayfield's Richmond Hail Mary win would've gotten him in regardless of using the 2004 format or the Playoff format.
Why would that be a problem? Just start the playoffs with ten to go. Doesn't matter if it starts on race 20 or race 27. A bigger problem would be working out stage points in the pre-ticker era. But 98-03 should still be doable.
Sterling Marlin would be the champion in 2001. Which wouldn't sit well with Dale Earnhardt fans who hated on Marlin for his role in Dale Earnhardt's fatal crash.
Great Video! You could actually do this all the way back through all the NASCAR years. I'd be interested to know if Petty and Earnhardt would have had more or less than 7 championships or if Mark Martin would have gotten one.
@@emperorburton tf you mean. At the time, those 4 were the best wheel men. Johnson wasnt quite at the level of the other 3, but he still would have won the Chip.

Bias, it would have been great being a JJ fan. Unbias, I think it still would have been great because of the excitement of what would have came with it. To me, it would have made more sense to have the playoffs at this point because the field sizes, the number of competitors, and the size of the fan base. I don't know if they would have needed the stage racing. I like to see these hypothetical videos because they are fun to look and think "Man, what if....."
That would definitely be awesome! Had Johnson won the title in 2004, he would be an 8-time champion! Maybe more added to his name. Also, how were you able to calculate the points in each round? I think I might use that for my stop motion NASCAR league.
It may be inaccurate, but it's entertaining to see this video if everything went down like the playoffs now. I'll take entertainment over accuracy in this situation.
The playoffs are just as much garbage as the Chase, but at least the dominant drivers were up there and not having the party spoiled. Here’s to Jeff Gordon, the TRUE 2004 champ
Ahh back when I thought Jr could win 2 or maybe even 3 championships before his career was over. Definitely had the talent, just never used it to its full potential.
Maybe the playoffs weren't such a bad idea afterall. Of course it needs tweaks like win in your in and win and automatically advance eliminated so points matter.
This playoff format would have made those last 10 races very exciting. Especially Homestead. I was on the edge of my seat watch that GWC finish just thinking about lol
