What If NASCAR Had the Playoffs In 2000?

- The 2000 season was a huge ending of an era for NASCAR. Set right before the historic 2001-2007 TV deal the last remnants of old NASCAR production were in place. But what if they had the playoffs on their hands back then? What if NASCAR had the playoffs in 2000?

HYPOTHETICAL!
Michael Waltrip
Nooo not hypothetical
He said the funny
0:25 👍
_I know they would have raced differently. This is just for fun._
Up to now, I think Jaret has said "Hypothetical Situation" about 17 times. 2004-2016 (13 times). 2003-2000 (4 times)
Hypothetical!
Make that 19
@@TheIceberg Can you do 1996 please?
Jeremy Mayfield: *Intimidates the Intimidator*
Me: wait. That’s illegal
i was going to comment hypothetical but that's been overdone
now what if, hypothetically, i commented "hypothetical"
interesting Carnation

I love how this was hypothetical and some drivers never changed
Jaret: Finally! I finished 1949 _HYPOTHETICAL!_ I’m finally done!

Andrew Meyer Pintys wouldn’t take long (2007-2020)
Bobby Labonte: You have disgraced my championship.
How, he still in both this and reality?
Remember when rookies were actually a threat for the win every week?
I like how even in hypotheticals Johnny Benson still had basically the same season.
1999: Bobby Labonte
1998: Jeff Gordon
I always loved that NASCAR 2000 logo. Awesome that Labonte would have won it anyway
“Dem cheatin’ Gibbs Toyo- er, Pontiacs!”
Bobby Labonte has been my favorite driver since 97 when I started watching Nascar. My heart was really beating when you got to the last race. I was rooting for Bobby to win the playoffs . Like this was really happening. I'm so glad he still got the championship. 2000 was just his year and a great year to be a 18 car fan! Can't ever take that championship away from him. haha. Great video dude!
Pretty crazy if nascar would've had a playoff system like this back then, history would look so much different
Playoffs are not for motorsports nascar knew that back then
I think this shows how truly strong the #18 was in 2000. Now, when I did the math by virtue of the Chase Grid rules, I had Jeff Gordon as the champion. The difference was ultimately stage racing and the Playoff Points of how they were awarded, and them carrying over from round to round.
I love how underrated this season is. I know it’s not nearly as underrated as 2006, but still…
Rusty wallace is sooo underrated
What if Davey and Alan lived? How many Cups would Earnhardt have? What if Earnhardt lived? How many Cups would JR have? It's all a bunch of what ifs. ..
Bobby LaBonte deserved that 2000 Championship. Class act and a hell of a wheelman.
Being A diehard Rusty Wallace fan 2000 was his last good year in my book. 4 wins, and should have won the Brickyard 400 that year also
9 poles as well
He also at one point lead more laps than any other driver during the season. But inconsistency & dnfs pretty much hurt his championship bid especially since he was just as fast as labonte.
When you get outright passed by the series champion in a race I don't think you "should" have won the race lol. Bobby beat rusty in the brickyard that year.
Damn so very close...as a Dale Jarrett fan, we could have made it to the final four with the Rockingham win, but crashing at Charlotte doomed us.
5:35 Rusty Wallaces car that day was a rocketship, he was lapped at one point I think from unscheduled stop and started inside the leaders after a caution and drove away from them and worked his way back into the top 10 under green when that wreck he was involved in happened. He made up more than half a lap under green conditions
What if NASCAR had playoffs in 1949
A compelling idea lol
Cursed
10 race playoff for a 8 race season 👀
Those last 5 laps at Talladega give me the same chills 20 years later. Such an amazing run from the 3 car.
“don’t come to the comments with a stick up you’re ass!”🤣 i love this channel
I love your videos and thanks for meeting me at Bristol
As a huge Bobby Labonte fan, I like it
New series idea : What if nascar had the chase in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020
Like the original chase (2004) or the couple 1,000 changes to it?
Yes!
Nah screw the chase format, do old school points formats
Oh yeah... the original Chase😂😂
man those people who watched dale win at dega had no clue how lucky they were
0:48 you forgot to mention that Jeff Burton also won at the July Daytona race.
Seeing Dale win again oh how I miss that. I was at this race
12:47 - “Bobby Labonte is the NASCAR Winston Cup Champion for 2000”
As a lifelong Bobby Labonte, im happy so see he is the 2000-2001 champion. He was really consistent in 1999, i wouldnt be surprised if he is the 1999 champion too
This really is an amazing video that requires a ton of work. I just wanna say that I miss Pontiac
Mandy need to bring the series back
NOOOO! RUSTY, YOU CAN PASS ON THE OUTSIDE BRUTHA!!
All I've learned from this series is that while entertaining, the playoffs seems to award hot hands. But maybe that's ok? Either way. Wish Jr. won one at some point. Always wanted it for the guy.
I'm impressed that 13 different drivers won a race
I’m really loving this “What if” series, very interesting and well thought out! Keep it up man 👍
Are you going to do the 1990s in this format?
Great job! Cant imagine the time spent coming up with the system. Great job man!
Them JGR Pontiacs, Texas boy Labonte, I like this hypothetical season.
This is why I love the playoffs
This is why I hate it
@@eliwhite5548 So...you don't like the What ifs? Its ok if you don't lol
@@nascardonuts who said anything about what ifs? You said you like the playoffs, I said I don't like the playoffs.
@@eliwhite5548 I love the playoffs because of these videos
@@nascardonuts This video was ok, but I'd prefer to have no playoff. If the trade is no playoff vs short hypothetical, slightly interesting videos on a playoff, I'm taking "no playoff" every time.
This experiment harkens to the phrase “The more things change, the more they stay the same”
The last race looks alot like Atlanta...not homestead 👀
Yeah, Atlanta used to be the final race of the year.
Love it!! I love the what if’s. Great job!!
I get why they do the playoffs but instead of getting cut, they should just go back to like the chase and have them fight it out. They can keep stages and playoff points but as like extra points. Just a thought.
I mean Robby Gordon is the goat of ALL Gordon’s
Blue Cup Boy have you lost your mind cause I'll help you find it
No, Cecil is.
Jeff Burton also won the Pepsi 400 that summer also
I liked it The Iceberg! Keep up what you going of what if.
Woulda been nice to see the full list and see a side by side of how the standings actually progressed
Cool love this series
I have been WAITING for this video...😉🏁
OH THANK GOD IT'S FINALLY HERE
I know you probably won't see this but I had already done the calculations for 1992 with stage points and everything. I did this because I had seen the publication that you no longer wanted to make these videos and I thought you would do until the 1999 season and I wanted to know how 1992 would end. If you want, I can give you the results that I have.
1999!!!!!!🙏
Hey make aseries if u doing what if 2014 had the old playoff system
Let's say, hypothetically, I implemented the playoffs in the 2000 NASCAR Winston Cup Series season.
You should do this for other Motorsports, like what if f1 had the playoffs
I still wouldn't be entertaining enough for me to watch the race.
After you finish the next two, is there any chance you could post some stats on yearly stage points? I'd like to know how Truex's 2017 stacks up historically.
18th to 1st in 3 laps.
'nuff said
I can’t wait to see how this goes if you continue into the 90 s and 80s ... if possible
Not going to lie, the first thing I thought when I saw this video posted is I wonder is Jerru Nadeau somehow managed his way into the final four.....
What if NASCAR has the playoffs in 202020. Just a hypothetical
Can you do this for each season of the modern era?
That’s some real nice quality you got from the talladega race. Where did you find it?
What if NASCAR had the playoffs in 1999?
What if NASCAR had the playoffs in in 1959?
Yes!
You should do “what if the xfinity/ nationwide/ Busch series had the playoffs in the past
how did you decide the stage lengths? just using the current stage lengths?
seeing single file restarts in nascar seems weird nowadays.
bruh you gotta make one for 2017, 2018, 2019, and (when the season's over) 2020. just make sure you keep the line about them racing different because its a hypothetical situation
As Fish has said already: This is just a hypothetical scenario
I love these videos
Did you factor in Gordon’s penalty after Richmond? I didn’t hear you say anything about that. That might’ve been the difference between him getting eliminated at Talladega and going into the round of eight.
Not a huge deal but Jeff Gordon actually failed post race inspection following his Richmond win. Not sure it even affects anything bug picture
Gordon would have been cucumbered at Richmond due to the manifold
Hell yeah, Park got his top 10!
No matter the way that you slice it, it's still Bobby's year.
3:20 in waiting to see if Earnhardt makes the final 4.
The so called playoffs are the worst thing that has ever happened to racing. NO other sport in the world gives away points or scores or wins. You have to EARN them. What NASCAR has done is turned their racing into a gimmick. And now that they have killed every other form of racing they are taking the whole thing down. NO THANK YOU!!!
It's one of
Please do the 90s
What if NASCAR had the 2004 - 2013 Chase format from 1975 - 2003 and 2014 - Present
You skipped the Rockingham race
The reason this is such a stupid premise is that IF the playoffs existed at the time, teams would have strategized differently. They would have made different choices and taken different risks in the late races. They would have spent more testing money on Homestead and the final races. Etc. You can't take a set of rules that teams built strategy around, switch the set of rules, and then assume the races would have turned out exactly the same. This is such a dumb concept.
you must be fun at parties...
I need to make a compilation of The Iceberg saying, this is just a hypothetical situation
YES!
The Iceberg I will make it tonight!
I can't wait when you get to 1998 season
Even though that season was kinda boring there was so many different winners
Do the 1999 season please.
Wait only 2 more, I was hoping for like 10-20 more honestly at least all the way to 1987
I’ll be doing 1994 in October and 1992 in November. These aren’t my favorite videos to make so I want to end on a high note.
One thing you didn’t mention is that the rookie of the year didn’t change. Because we all know the current way they do rookie of the year is messed up.
Would Gordon lose the Richmond win and the automatic berth in the next round because of the penalty he received post race?
3 things are certain in life: death, taxes and the iceberg saying tHis iS AlL HypOtHeTiCaL.
I have an idea of a new series. What if 2004-2019 used the OLD points system from 2000???
bobby labonte, brother of terry labonte.
I think this is a hypothetical scenario? ;)
Sadly, this would’ve been the only time Dale Earnhardt and Dale Earnhardt Jr. would be in the playoffs together.
Jeff Gordon would be penalized 100 points and probably lose his guaranteed automatic advancement to the second round after his Richmond victory. Not sure how it would effect him otherwise.
It really wouldn’t when I look at it. The same result still happens.
@@TheIceberg Great job by the way. Enjoyed it.
I have watched all these Playoff videos and it took me this long to realize that you're including stage points. How?
Lol, yeah I went back into each race and found roughly where the stages would end and copied them down from there.
@@TheIceberg Must have been grueling and frustrating, especially for races like Rockingham that never had stages.
Um...Gordon should of been disqualified from Richmond because of what they found in his engine and his car failed inspection when this format existed during that time....Just saying
I guess we’ll have to bend the rules.
@@TheIceberg Yup
Glad somebody noticed, but I can live with the rule bending lol
I'm watching these backwards
