Life was easier for Sarah Jane because she passed for white, and so she tried to keep her mother out of the picture so she could go on passing for white. She may have loved her mother, but it was more important to her to keep up her charade.
Not really. Black children in my experience RARELY disrespect their mothers in that way. And back in those days if they did, they would be picking themselves up off the floor, and Mama wouldn't have shed ONE tear.

This movie taught me ONE THING: to love and appreciate my mother. She means more to me than anything in the world and I could not imagine being so cruel to her.
Just watched this film again tonight. I have seen it many, many times. This scene and the funeral scene had me actually sobbing! Sara Jane was a tortured soul and Annie was a saint. They both had outstanding performances.
Her mom understood and accepted her daughter's emotional immaturity and confusion. The last word she said to her mother was 'mama', but it was whispered in secret so no one else would know. It was important for her to know she could always come home. She didn't hate her mom. She hated herself and her mom knew that and waited for her to grow up and know the things that really mattered.
The people who love us the most are usually the ones that we treat the worst. You should have sympathy for Sara Jane because she was so lost and conflicted with who she truly was and the love she had for her mother vs the cold hard truth of the world being black in those days. She didn’t feel like she belonged in theblack or white community so she chose to live in the world that she falsely perceived to be more rewarding. People sacrifice their true selves and loved ones everyday to get ahead in this world and she is no exception to the rule. Passing was a real thing, whether going into a store in the South, or choosing to live your life as white. That’s why many of the descendants of Sally Hemings have been ‘white’ for decades. This movie is a classic and it’s true to a certain aspect of African American life. That’s why we speak of White Privilege.
My big sister told me to watch this movie 30 years ago. I was a teen then. Now I'm a Grandmother of 3...til this day I still cry ,when I see the part when she disowned her mom.💔💔💔
Susan Kohners mother was Mexican. She was a well known actress, silent and early 'talkies', Lupita Tovar. She was beautiful, amazingly she lived to be 106, I think. Fascinating! I enjoyed Susans acting and I agree her performance in this movie was award worthy. Fredi Washington was in a few films and I think acted on stage, she was beautiful too. I do think her acting was stilted, but in the 30s that acting 'style' was very common. There is a DVD available with both Imitation of Life versions with extras, I highly reccomend it.
Annie was very patient and understanding towards Sarah Jane's feelings. The part where Annie states "How do you explain to your child that she was born to be hurt?"

the moral of the story, if you willfully hurt someone you love to be excepted by someone else who lacks moral strength if they die and you have not made peace; now thats a living Hell!
Annie was an angel, but Sara Jane was not a monster as many people want to believe. As a young woman trapped in the society that octrasized her for she was, she had to survive in the only way she knew how.... Sara Jane was NOT guilty of anything..... To survive was the only thing that Sara Jane knew, and how could we possibly blame her for that ??????
@sboudreaux27 I never saw it like that. Annie literally took care of Ms Laura, her friend and confidante, they would've grown old together with Annie still looking after Ms Laura. They all lived in the same house. Laura could not see her life without Annie being there
What makes it so sad is she really lived for her daughter. Didnt get a new man, stayed single and devoted herself to her girl who was the love of her life. The daughter didn't just look white, she couldnt relate to black people. Her mother moved her into a white world from a young age.
Both versions of this movie are powerful and heartbreaking. I saw the classic version (1934) first and was devastated by the sad ending. I like this version too--equally sad.
I have a beautiful black mother, and my daughter was by a white boy!! I made her watch this movie man!! I swear it brings me to tears every time I see this I swear!! I can't believe I'm experiencing similar thing with my beautiful gorgeous girl in these times...i love her so much but I am beyond tired of this bs...i watched this film 50 years ago when I was a child but somehow I felt it was preparing of what's to come...heart breaking.
Saw this as a little kid and cried my eyes out. I had no idea what the situation and the times were like and that there even was segregation in the U.S.
This movie is one of my all-time favorite movie. Unfortunately they lived in a time when America wanted black people to hate their melanin just like today. Black Mothers will always be strong and love their children and men.
You have to be pretty old to know this movie. I remember as a kid, watching it with my mom. It is a wonderful movie about love, betrayal and sorrow. This clip is but a small taste of a delicious movie. I rate this, 4 tissues. Love the ending.
Your not alone. Some not all of these kids today want their way and not that they don't love u, bit u don't allow them to do what they want to do, u are you the parent and they are the kids
see, that's the thing. she didn't have to birth you. no one asked her to. she CHOSE to do that herself when we never asked for it, so she shouldn't expect anything in return
+Dee Lux I think she means heartbreaking ... It's sickening that she won't accept her blackness and how she's doing her own mother like that. The ones that's cared for her all these years and still treated her like nothing
See, a lot of people really don't understand the character Sara Jane. Do not equate the times now verus the time the story depicts. I felt sorry for her because she couldn't love herself because society did not "allow" her to love herself. Consider the role models at that time. If you were black you were a maid, butler, janitor or if lucky a teacher. She wanted the opportunities not afford her, so she used what she had, to get what she wanted - her beauty and light complexion. Her mother loved her regardless as is a mother's love. In the end, it was a tragic lesson she (Sara Jane) had to learn.
Juanita Moore was horribly robbed; she deserved the Oscar for this performance.

Every time. My. MOM. Watches. This. Movie. She's. In. 😢 TEARS
I can't believe I'm experiencing similar thing with my beautiful gorgeous girl in these times...i love her so much but I am beyond tired of this bs...i watched this film 50 years ago when I was a child but somehow I felt it was preparing of what's to come...heart breaking.
As Annie told Miss Laura on the beach, "her father was practically white".
estefan bravo he probably he was, it was also rape i bet
This is the first movie and greatest movie I've ever seen!
😢 A mother love 💞I cry everytime I see this movie💔the world made her think she hated her mother but she really love her so sad😭
Saw this as a little kid and cried my eyes out. I had no idea what the situation and the times were like and that there even was segregation in the U.S.
It makes me cry. Imagine how mom was feeling
Brilliant acting, what a film
Wow, I'm 24yrs old I've never seen this movie before but I'm definitely going to now!
This movie is one of my all-time favorite movie. Unfortunately they lived in a time when America wanted black people to hate their melanin just like today. Black Mothers will always be strong and love their children and men.
I’ve seen this movie so many times and every time I cry cry cry ! 😥😥😥
You have to be pretty old to know this movie. I remember as a kid, watching it with my mom. It is a wonderful movie about love, betrayal and sorrow. This clip is but a small taste of a delicious movie. I rate this, 4 tissues. Love the ending.
I'm going through the exact same thing with my kids they don't love me like I love them.
Your not alone. Some not all of these kids today want their way and not that they don't love u, bit u don't allow them to do what they want to do, u are you the parent and they are the kids
I’m so sorry
Interesting info, I also love this movie watched it many times. I love the classics, watch some every day ,but never saw the 1930s version. Thank you.
I love this movie. But, I can't watch it. It's the movie that made me weep like a 3 year old.
Smh never disrespect the person that gave you life. She didn't have to give birth to you but she did. Sara Jane worked my nerves.
see, that's the thing. she didn't have to birth you. no one asked her to. she CHOSE to do that herself when we never asked for it, so she shouldn't expect anything in return
Now this is acting at its best.
Great movie but this scene is sickening
+Lorna Christian Why is it sickening to you? I mean, define "sickening"... the acting style? Or do you mean heart breaking?
+Dee Lux I think she means heartbreaking ... It's sickening that she won't accept her blackness and how she's doing her own mother like that. The ones that's cared for her all these years and still treated her like nothing
Thank you, Cam. It definitely is heartbreaking. I don't blame her for her weakness though. I blame a racist nation. So many lessons in this movie.
accept her blackness!!!? She wouldn't have been accepted by them either back in the day
I don't care how old this movie is I still cry . And I'm 69 at the end she wish she had her mama. 🌈😪💜
First film that broke my heart
this movie hits me EVERYTIME! I can't find the part where they put Annie in the carriage smh
They didn't show that part did they?? I'm trying to🤔 think tho•
She had a good career start. The burlesque shows just short of a modern day stripper. See how her ‘color’ worked for her. 😶
I AM CRYING ALL OVER AGAIN!
