    I really like the idea of range-extended electric vehicles, seems like you get all that's good in a traditional electric car, without the range anxiety.
    Also they were very expensive new, but they're more reasonably priced in the used market

      Six years later, and this is the car I think I'll get next when they get down to £5K
      It's currently £6.5K or so. The Hyundai Kona is about the same price this was, six years ago on the used market. That's really the better car but I'm not going to spend £16K on a car tbh

    I never realized that Vauxhall sold a re-branded Volt. That front end- it's like they shipped over a Volt, picked on it, and told it "We're calling you an Ampera, and we don't care if you like it", which made it cry and made it's eyeliner run.

      @davefish2280 7 лет назад +6

      Well you can power out of corners in the Ampera, it's got a lot of low down torque like most electric cars. You can't if you've already ran the battery down though, which by the time Tiff got his turn they had done.

  • @simonjelley
    @simonjelley 2 года назад +6

    Now I can afford one (and have bought one) I see quite how dumb Tiff’s review is. Under any normal spirited use, including full throttle acceleration from a series of roundabouts, the car maintains the battery level using regen and increased engine power once at speed, even if ev mode battery is depleted. This works as long as you aren’t accelerating all the time and also better off you brake more gently. If you want to be an imbecile, hold or mountain mode would prioritise charging the battery more on the straights so would maintain power better. Context: my other car is an Elise; I don’t hang about, and this car is great.

    if you're planning on a track day ... keep it in hold or mountain mode to preserve the charge. It is a good idea to occasionally draw down the power to "propulsion power reduced" to help balance the battery cells - but for 99% of your driving - you can use the mixed driving modes to prevent the car from reaching that point unless you just don't understand how it was meant to work.

    just bought one of these, for less then £9000, free road tax, not bought any petrol as the tank is half full and only there if i need it. drives great and packs a punch with the 150bhp electric motors and if and when on petrol there is still no sound as the engine runs on tick over as that generates enough power to cruise at town speeds. My Bmw was costing me £90 a month in running costs fuel and tax. Amazing car and now affordable. go find one a take a test drive. They only sold in the uk for 3 years 2012-2015

    It´s not even available at my country, and in here you have to pay a diesel tax for every car which runs on anything else than petrol, so to owning that car would cost me and lot. And diesel tax for average car like Mercedes E-class/BMW 5-series is like 600€/year. And that´s probably the reason why Opel has not bring that in here.

    • @d33dub
      @d33dub 7 лет назад

    • @jeffkeith637
      @jeffkeith637 7 лет назад

      During the period it's recharging from the petrol generator there's limited performance though? I'm keen for electric vehicles but they have to be functional in the same way as what we currently have.

    • @sosimple
      @sosimple 7 лет назад +2

      It has no performance limitation on any mode. It runs on fully electric mode for about 50 miles which in my case (and in most people's) is enough for my day to day driving. I go months without using a drop of petrol. Then, whenever you need to do long distance trips, you can do so without any limitation. I bought mine in the Netherlands and drove it to Portugal (1500 miles) without stopping for a charge. In this "test" they managed to fully deplete the battery and then proceeded to completely trash the car. Obviously it went into a limited power mode. It was never designed to be trashed around a track for God knows how long... Even so, had they used the 'Mountain' mode, the car would most likely have been able to cope with the trashing about.
      If you are interested in picking up a used one, now is the right time to do so, as many are coming of leases and as such you can easily find a properly maintained one.

    • @jeffkeith637
      @jeffkeith637 7 лет назад

      So there is a limited power mode that is tripped by some depleted battery parameter. Not enough range for here in Australia. For me, anyway. How did you do 1500 miles if they couldn't last a day?

    • @Henry0870
      @Henry0870 7 лет назад +3

      You just fill up the (small 35 litre/ 9,24 US gal) gas tank every 500 to 600 km/ 310 mlie to 372 mile. Average is about 42 mpg.
      I own an Ampera for 18 months now, never ever had the limited power message, but then again, I don't race with it on a track at high speeds.....
      BTW, this is an old video, from 2012, This model Ampera (and 1st gen Volt) are no longer in production.

    • @JustAnotherBigAl
      @JustAnotherBigAl 7 лет назад

      Sorry, I have to re-educate you (again). There are many types of hybrid systems. The two main ones are 'parallel' and 'series' hybrid systems. A parallel hybrid system has and internal combustion engine (ICE) and an electric motor which can be used together or independently to power the wheels. A series hybrid uses an electric motor to power the wheels while the ICE regenerates the battery. Check the Wikipedia page on 'hybrid vehicles'. Here's a quote; "Chevrolet Volt, a series hybrid plug-in hybrid, also called extended range electric vehicle (EREV)." Case closed, unless you again 'believe' that Wikipedia is 'wrong'

      Not exactly, no. It's off the market now in UK And EU due to poor sales numbers.
      In the 4 years they were on sale in the UK I think Vauxhall sold around 1,300 Amperas total.
      Under the Opel badge in the EU they sold around 10k cars in the 5 years they were on sale.

      Sadly sales were poor because Vauxhall never really advertised them and until last week I thought they were purely electric so far less practical for folks like me who have no off-street parking to allow home charging, nor anywhere at work to juice up. That makes the otherwise ideal Nissan Leaf and Renault Zoe impractical for me as once a month I have a 150 mile round trip so they lack the range to do it without stopping for a few hours at a charging point and hoping I find a vacant one.
      Only a few selected Vauxhall dealers were able to sell and maintain them, and I happen to live near what was likely the most important one, Vauxhall Wimbledon. But even their dealer displays as drove past thousands of times didn't make any reference to the range extender. Had I known I might have bought one, parked there for their free charging, and then pulled a folding bicycle out for the last mile to and from work.

    39k(-5k) for a vauxhall?... Never gonna happen. even with the discount it's a vauxhall for BMW 3 series money. only the most ardent tree-huggers out there are stupid enough to pay 34/39k for a vauxhall.

    I was watching this video as I intended to see the review of the new Vauxhall Ampera that has approximately 300 miles purely electric. As I understand from the comment section on this video, this was originally filmed back in 2011 or something. Disliked.

      But can your A-class do 6,100 miles to 1.0 mpg? I bought mine 2 years ago for 12,500 and because I can charge up at home and work, I use hardly any fuel which has saved me a fortune in fuel. Possibly up to £1,200 saved.

    Electric cars are POINTLESS
    Doesn't address 'climate issues' even remotely, more a politically motivated agenda in collaboration with automotive manufacturers
    Where does electricity come from?
    Answer = fossil fuel burning power stations hence more electric cars on the roads = higher demand on fossil fuel burning power stations
    So how has this helped the environment?

    • @CousinSteve

      A moronic comment by a brain dead fool. I never said electric cars were rubbish to drive, I said electric cars are POINTLESS when it comes to helping the environment because the pollution causing fossil fuel burning issue still exists!
      These cars still need to be charged so where is the electricity coming from?????
      From fossil fuel burning power stations
      Helping the environment - my ass
      I work in the department of 'political economy' in a prestigious London University, trust me, I know what I talking about buddy, this enormous push to go electric is a political agenda in tandem with auto manufacturers and absolutely fuck all to do with helping the environment

      And an awful lot still do, Nuclear being a fossil fuel too and a very dangerous one at that.
      Alternative green energy production technologies exist today and have done for decades but the oil production industry doesn't want to progress along those lines as it'll hit profits and the oil industry runs the world
      Unless there are leaps in advancement in battery development, an electric car will remain pointless and NOT practical due to range
      There are other much more significant issues with electric cars but that's another debate
