Larson had a distinct voice that was evident during his Superbia days. And it has been inadvertently imitated by many songwriters from my own generation.
He was a greeting card candy cupid, there was a blizzard it was twenty below, She was 15, clean, lonely and stupid, as pure as the virgin snow, He pulled her in from the storm, how the fire was warm, She didn't have the nerve to say no, she didn't have the nerve to say no, Beat her till she's black and blue and grey, draw a little heart, Draw a little arrow, draw a little blood, v-v-v-valentines day, Red wine Waterford crystal, chocolate kisses and lace, Knives and chains and a pistol mounted on a wall like scars on her face, He said he liked to play rough, as he locked the handcuff, she knew it would be tough to escape, she knew it would be tough to escape, Beat her till she's black and blue and grey(beat her till she's black and blue and grey), draw a little heart(draw a little heart), Draw a little arrow(draw a little arrow), draw a little blood, v-v-v-valentines day, February winter in her heart, said id show her normal love she said, Too late to start, she said too late to start, Now her fashion is basically leather, favorite color is basically red, And her passions change like the weather, as she dances from bed, to bed, to bed, And she feels like a fool but she likes her men cruel, i doubt shell be cool till shes dead, Doubt shell be cool till she's dead, She says beat me till I'm black and blue and grey(beat me till I'm black and blue and grey) Draw a little heart(draw a little heart), Draw a little arrow(draw a little arrow) Draw a little, but she says draw a little arrow, Draw a little heart, Draw a little arrow, Draw a little blood V-v-v-valentines, v-v-v-valentines day, Valentines day, v-v-v-valentines day, Valentines day, v-v-v-valentines day, Valentines day
This is my favorite song off Jonathan Sings Larson and I'm so happy that it has become a fully fleshed out song. The chorus with everyone at the end is brilliant.
The way they sing the song makes it sound really pretty But then the meaning makes me a bit uneasy But I still love the whole song when I clicked I thought that it was going to be a really sweet innocent song
*screeches* Yet another masterpiece by Jonathan Larson. So sad he's so gone. And everyone's voices are so beautiful (George Salazar is my favorite but, listen to his voice)
This is again one of the most amazing songs coming from the amazing brain of Jonathan Larson. I really wish this had not been pulled from Rent. I wish there was some background story as to why this song was pulled from the original show. Perhaps some type of documentary on the story of how Rent came to be come a show and its history of development at the New York Theater Workshop and Jonathan Larsons death and Rents road to Broadway and beyond. They did Tik Tik Boom and why not a RENT documentary story.
I’m trying to understand what seems to be everyone’s praise for the song. If you have lived in this kind of atmosphere and just listening to the words cause anxiety attacks then not so good. The song seems to imply that the girl found her kink by the guy beating her from the beginning. There’s a difference between s&m and bd and physical violence abuse.
Well I was a bit iffy about it first and idk what context it would have been used in for RENT, I'm guessing maybe for Mimi? Anyways it's not really glorifying her situation, the message of the song is simply that the person singing was in love with her but because of her past she is too broken and too exhausted to work through it to be in a healthy relationship. Sure it is a very heavy song and would definetly be triggering to some people but the praise is first of all for the musical genius that is behind it and for the raw honest lyrics that describe one of the ways early abuse can fuck a person up. And I debated it a bit but I don't find it too glorifying, it is made pretty clear that she isn't the happiest she could be but that she has given up hope in having smth better and never learnt that she deserves better. So I think it's less about kinks than about unresolved trauma. But correct me if I got smth wrong?
@@sarahkosian6475 This was a Mimi song yes, Also featured Maureen in some parts on one of the demos as well as Roger if I recall. I think one demo was all Mimi tho, so it must have changed overtime. Also this song was originally written well before rent and then Larson incorporated it into the show.
@@MBM1117727 cool, that's so interesting, thanks for the bonus info! Mini does make a lot of sense for this song and I would've loved to get a bit more of her story but I guess we got that with this song....
@@sarahkosian6475 You're welcome :) You should listen to the demos on youtube, very interesting, tho definitely not perfect. It's interesting to think what else Jonathan Larson might have changed if he had lived for the final previews.
I want sheet music for every song Jonathan Larson ever wrote. We must petition the Library of Congress, or whoever has the power of a pen, to release a complete score book of Jonathan Larson's songs.

It’s like this song was waiting for Andy to sing it, absolutely gorgeous
It's nice, but I can see why it was cut from the show.
This song is so unique yet there’s something distinctly Jonathan about it
It's the moody guitar riff.

I'm a simple girl: I see Johnathan Larsen project, I click.
Also I'm just glad Andy mientus is singing more rock roll kinda songs I missed that
The tune has a rent feel. I love it.
MI.X.KO it was a cut song from rent. There has been the original demos on RUclips in the past
@emilybrown148 well kind of yes. Jon wrote it for a seperate performance, but tried to fit it into one of the rent drafts.
I wish this song had made it into into the final draft of RENT. It's such a good song.
