12:38- Phyllis-" But he IS gay so there isn't the remotest possibility that he'll marry me!" Mother Dexter-" I guess being gay DOES have its advantages!" Yep- not having to marry Phyllis would be a plus! LOL
I remember this episode. I was 8yrs old and asked my grandmother, “what is gay.” She replied, “he thinks he’s a girl.” I was confused about that until I was in high school.
They seemed to have forgotten all about Phyllis's gay brother, he ought to have been a character, maybe a recurring one. Maybe he and this guy could've hit it off.
I’m thinking it might have been too campy even for the writers of “Phyllis.” Sometimes writers used the gay troupe as a ratings booster, or a very special episode, or a must-see TV event, or even a good old fashioned classic how-do-we-fix-this-disaster plot twist addition. I think “Three’s Company” and “Mash” used the gay or “he’s different” troupe loosely for comedy’s sake until they ran it into the ground.
I was thinking the same thing. At the end, rather than Leonard's homophobic joke, it would have been cute if Phyllis had a line about wanting to fix Scott up with her brother, since he turned out to be not a romantic fit for her. It would have been totally in character too for Phyllis too.
Let's be frank here: the reason Phyllis moved to the city by the Bay is that it is the only city where it is a Constitutional right to wear capes. Glamour doesn't do so well in Lincoln, NB.
6:22 “It’s the seventies...” Sorry it’s still the same... Getting just slightly better but just some places, some times. It was getting better, and then it got a lot worse in the eighties. But that scene was very daring and wonderfully educational for its time. Heartfelt thanks to Cloris Leachman and to MTM for being allies. 🏳️🌈 Though she should have tried to fix Scott up with her brother Ben?
Valerie Harper was probably an even bigger ally although I give all three women, and Betty White, enormous credit overall. In 1974, Valerie was arguably the biggest star on television and that year she gave an interview to The Advocate despite the advice not to (by her gay) agent. Cloris was asked to star in A Question of Love in 1978. Her role eventually went to Gena Rowlands (who was unforgettable in the role) but Cloris had turned it down. Cloris really should have taken the role, but she couldn't understand how a woman would risk losing her children for any romance. Cloris made it quite clear on The Tonight Show, when Valerie guest hosted, that she put her children before her career.
Edward Winter is a favorite of mine since I saw him doing Flagg on M*A*S*H. I did watch Phyllis in the 70s but don't remember much of it. I loved all her costars but she wasn't the same Phyllis as on MTM.
LOL... on going gag of mother Dexter having the hots for Charles Bronson and now she is doing a dirty needle point of him. Would have been great to have the real CB show up.
Mother Dexter was such a spot on precursor to GG, I wonder if they initially wanted to spin her off but the wonderful actress passed away. I wonder if GG creator Susan Harris got the idea from her colleagues on this show.
The actor playing Scott - Edward Winter - was most known for multiple TV series appearances and his continuing roles on 'Project UFO', Herman's Head' and as the by the book Colonel Flagg on 'MASH', as well as tony nominated roles in 'Cabaret' and 'Promises, Promises', and was in life, straight. It took considerable enlightenment/courage for any actor to play a gay character on television at this time as they risked being pigeon holed. Typically such roles went to minor or character types who were not series regulars. For a major star to have played a gay character would have been a thorn in their career. Now it seems every damn straight dude plays gay because he knows it's career capital writ large. Ain't life funny?
Uh, NO! Today, the pressure in Hollywood is for gays to play gays! But women can play men's roles in Shakespeare (where ironically men originally played all the women's roles). So I guess the rule is that members of highly discriminated groups can "act" other roles (same applies for offending the powerful and rich but never "punch DOWN" by humiliating the poor, powerless).
if only Phyllis's brother was added to this series. Imagine how hilarious it would be if he and Phyllis's former beau dated
Rest in peace Cloris Leachman. We will always love you.

And Phyllis could be the smothering sister! Lol

This is crazy! Hahahahah! “Did he tell you he was a switch hitter?”

Cloris we miss you already 😢
Scott was a semi regular on MASH.
Always thought he was cute.
Joe Cook was in original Halloween.
Yes he played Flagg
COLONEL FLAGG
I thought that was him! I've seen him outside the role and recognized him, but he looked different this time.
Yes, Edward Winter was HOT!!

I love Phyllis and wish this show would get a dvd release or streaming channel and mother Dexter is hilarious 😆.
It's being streamed on some cables.
Rhoda and Phyllis made a great team in the 70s.

Flagg was on MTM also.

If this were a show from the 90's or later, he would.

For “The Golden Girls’” Sofia? Absolutely! But then again, who doesn’t have a sassy, wise-cracking, no-nonsense elder in their family?
They were talking about her being "the Fonzie" of Phyllis, and they weren't kidding! She put the inevitably annoying Phyllis in her place.
Woman playing Scott's mother played in "Sybil". She was Frieda, Sybil's father's second wife.
He likes to play the field.
This was 2 years before Harvey Milk was killed.
lol would have written Jonathan and Audrey out, given Phyllis a new job, and had Bess and her husband move in and show Phyllis as a grandmother.
Words like criminal... My God it was That way

It shouldn't have been but those were the times.
Edward Winter was great as Scott
He was very handsome in a '70s sort of way.
I Do not remember this at all..but does anyone know that Cloris lived very healthy as a vegetarian?????
Tolerated ...hmmmm
What happened to Lars?!
Lars passed away right before the series began. Phyllis and Bess moved to San Francisco to start new lives.
The gay coach was cringing given the awful truth that came to light later.
Edward winter,
Didn't "Scott" play Blanche's blind boyfriend on a Golden Girls episode?
Yes, this guy always had a secret! ..lol
I remember him in the TV sitcom remake of "Nine to Five" in the Dabney Coleman role.
🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈
Colonel Flagg is gay?!!!!
Phyllis Lindstrom, LGBT ally. Lol
....her best role was being Ellen's mom. Watch it.
