Kilrain nailed it when he said, "If they can enslave one group- they can enslave all".

This movie should’ve won several Oscars. Unfortunately, it was released the same year as Schindler’s List.

I love how Kilrain schools the professor here with his hearty irish working class ethos.

I don’t agree with or understand a lot of what Kilrain says, but he nailed it on the head when he says “you take men one at a time”

This is Kevin Conway's best. And probably Jeff Daniel's too. I listen to this and I can say I agree with both sides.
Thank you for this movie if anybody is watching.

The fact that Daniels was "Dumber" in Dumb + Dumber still blows my mind - he IS the most valiant man in American history here - what an actor

He wants to prove he's a better man than his ancestors in Ireland. You have to understand the Irish were treated as 2nd class citizens. Many of them were fighting, as he says, to prove they are better men than what they are made out to be.

I think he’s more noble than that. He wants to create a world where a person is judged on their own merits alone whether that is good or bad. An Irish immigrant being forced into servitude and berated is just as unacceptable as a spoiled dandy getting wealth because his family was affluent

I adore this film and the poignant spirit of it - yet I have to admit that Chamberlain beginning this scene by asking Buster "what he thinks of negros" has to be one of the most unintentionally hilarious moments in the history of dramatic cinema lol.

Kilrain makes me VERY proud to an Irish American. His words to Chamberlain, his boss: "I see a vast great difference between us yet I admire you lad". 😁"The way they hang us in the old country". Really touched a nerve. DUH he's talking about the ENGLISH, and most of the Confederates pride themselves as "pure British stock".

I am equally proud to have been married to an Irish American. I lost him to cancer 14 years ago, but Kevin Conway and he looked very much alike, so I come back here to listen to this speech now and again. My Brian had an ancestor, James McRuer, who had fought in the Battle of Bachelor's Creek as part of the 132nd New York Sharpshooters. They received a citation for valor holding down cover fire until reinforcements arrived in defense of their position near New Bern, NC. Brian had a copy of that citation that I sent to his grandson Eamonn William Keveney so he would know where his people come from.

I recall being shown this movie in class, and I purchased it years ago. I re-watched it yesterday and thought, man, how spot on this part is. Sadly, Kilrain would be outed and canceled as a bigot in 2020, and I don't think this would be shown to 11 year olds in school anymore, correct me if I'm wrong, teachers.
Sidenote- What a watershed moment Gettysburg was! Everything from Harrison discovering the Union army in J.E.B. Stuart's absence, to Buford's early stand, to Colonel Chamberlain's Wheeling bayonet charge, to Pickett's failed attack... it's as if the Lord were writing a novel and chose these individuals to play a special role.
