I've lived here in Belarus for 14 years now, but I'm Welsh! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Your breakdown of society here and it's attitudes are perfect! Note that Wales has fought and still fights , successfully, to maintain its language and indeed, Belarusian is still taught in schools here in Belarus. All my wife's children and family speak and understand Belarusian! It's not dead yet as are the desires to be an independent nation and a part of Europe! 🤔🧐

Do you know of any good websites and whatnot to learn more about Belarus and it's people, and especially about the possibility of true independence there?
I am also kind of curious about Wales and the use of the Welsh language. Is it felt that the use of Welsh is necessary for Wales to retain it's own culture? It seems to me (from an outside observer) that Ireland is able to retain it's own culture while still speaking mostly English. Of course (most of) Ireland is not part of the U.K., so I'm sure that makes a difference in that regard.

Thank you Anna! We had a large rally in San Francisco on Saturday, about 1500 to 2000 people spoke and marched. Here in California many Russia-colonized groups have joined with the Ukrainian protests, such that there were hundreds of Belarusian, and Georgian people with signs and banners, and an important group calling for a free Buratya. Also, many Poles and the passioante Iranian freedom movement joined. Russia's colonized people should all be free !

By the way, this is exactly the purpose of Rusification, as practiced by both the Empire and the Soviet Union - deliberately and forcefully remove the indigenous people by either murder or transportation, equally forcefully move large numbers of Muscovian people into the territory. Also, the "Global West" and China would both be happier with with a still unified Russian Federation as a kind of DPRK 2.0 but with huge natural resources at bargain prices, if the alternative is Balkanisation.

I have been to the city of Brest in Belarus in 2009 with my orchestra, I was shocked, it looked like the city and country is stuck in 1980s and some vehicles on the road were even older than that. They took as to a huge WW2 memorial with a monument in the shape of a giant head of a fallen Soviet soldier, it was really gloomy and chilling, the snow and the cold (and the sad music) amplified the sombre atmosphere. They also took us to the village of Santa Claus and Mrs Claus (I thought Santa Claus "lives" in Finland, I guess that's Belarusian/Russian Santa Claus and Mrs Claus). Soviet buildings, Lenin statue and all that was a part of that unique "Soviet" experience. It made me really sad when I saw a couple of months ago that trains with tanks and heavy weapons are also used in Brest.

This isn't insignificant. This act of sabotage didn't happen on the border. It happened in a suburb of Minsk. It wasn't Ukrainians who blew up this AWACS jet. It was Belarusian resistance operatives. An AWACS is an extremely high value target - a half billion dollar asset. To put this into perspective, the value of this single plane was worth almost a full 1% of Belarus' national GDP. Ostensibly, the security should have been optimal around this plane, yet we saw enough cracks in the security apparatus - on both the Belarusian and Russian sides - that this could happen...My gut tells me that Lukashenko is not long for this world - or at least for staying in his perch in Minsk. The way I see it playing out is this. Typical strongman playbook stuff. Putin will be furious and order Lukashenko to conduct a retaliatory purge, including on innocents, to set an example. The already shaky internal security of Belarus (as this brazen attack shows) will fail as Lush'ko gets his long overdue backlash, and either he will be spirited out on a charter for parts unknown, or Putin will throw him to the wolves. Then, the Russians will either just get kicked out of Belarus, or he ends up fighting a two front war...Just as in the world of fish, Big Tyrant eats Little Tyrant and the whole setup eventually fails. Unlike isolated Russians, Belarusians have access to Ukrainian and other Western media. Especially the Polish media, who gleefully report on Russian failure, day in and day out... 😃...In fact, the running joke is that NATO forces landed en masse in Poland to keep the Poles from sacking Russia (and as the narrative goes, from starting WWIII). Even if Belarusians have to watch these war reports on the sly, I suspect they have been sufficiently inspired by your Ukrainian Heroes that they are about to decide they've had enough...Slava Ukriani!...

I was in Minsk when the Ryanair flight was hijacked in 2021. Before I had to flee the country, I did not meet one single person that could say even one good thing about Lukashenko; they HATE him, especially so the younger the age. They don't like Russians either. From what I was told, Russians treat Belarusians like a conquered people/colonials/2nd-class-citizens-in-their-own-country. And Belarusians sense of style is indeed atrocious. It's like a old, poor person who has never had enough money to decorate anything in their entire life was given a handful of dollars to do so, and so made their decorating choices based on what they remember seeing in a hundred-something year old book about "styles of the rich and powerful" that they remember reading in high school. No offense to poor and ignorant, I was most of my life (still?), but seeing it makes you think about it all the more.
I asked a few friends that I made there whether Belarus could ever try and break free from Russia like Ukraine has. They said that everyone that had the will and courage to fight Russia had already went to Ukraine to do just that. Many others have been imprisoned.
Belarusians largely speak Russian, but many also speak Belarusian, and they are DELIGHTED if someone speaks that to them instead of Russian. They do have a sense of themselves, but they never had leaders like Ukraine had that pushed their language and culture as distinct from Russia. Lukashenko tried to do so belatedly, but backtracked after Putin invaded Ukraine in 2014. Edit: Actually, now that I think about it, I remember seeing billboards every mile or so, on average (i.e., many) that said something on the order of "Belarus is its own country, and its own military, etc etc". The message was unequivocal. That dream may have been put on hold now that Russia occupies the country, but the sentiment is definitely there.

The freedom fighters in Belarus didn't just manage to blow up "a jet"... it was one of the most scarce aviation resources Russia has: Radar planes. The brave fighters hit where it hurt the most and where it helped the Ukrainian civilians the most. These radar planes are used to coordinate air borne missile strikes and detect where drones are shot down, etc. So this was a really big loss for Russia and a humongous sight of relief for Ukrainians. Excellent target selection, and a hugely dangerous mission. They deserve the Ukrainian medal of valor for sure!

I would love to hear your opinion on the possible collapse of Russia.
In my opinion it would be beneficial to everybody - to Ukraine, to Belarus and other countries having been oppressed by Russia - to the Russian people and to the whole world. I think that Russia in its current form does nothing good to the planet, it only creates problems.
Once I believed, that Russia could be reformed, and become a 'normal' place which could interact with its neighbors and the world in a more positive way - I don't believe that anymore.
In stead I think that a collapse of Russia is necessary so that one or several new countries can emerge with more 'healthy' societies (politically and morally, based on some human values). Unfortunately, I also think that such a transformation must come from the inside, I don't think it can be forced from the outside.

After the war, or in the event that some kind of uprising takes place in Belarus then Russia will take it completely. They are in the process of doing so, the Kremlin documents say by 2030.

Anna, I'm not sure that Russia needs to be broken up. What it needs is to recognize that it is a multi-national, multi-ethnic country. You've mentioned that Ukraine recognizes many ethnic groups in Ukraine such as Crimean Tatars, Poles, Romanians and Moldovans, Bulgarians, Gagauz, Jews, etc. The largest minority in Ukraine are Russians (though that number may have fallen in the past year as some chose to identify as Ukrainian). This is the greatest achievement of the European Union; Europeans now recognize the cultures and languages of many countries, but have open borders and a sense of shared destiny and history. Russia could learn from this but it will take time.
A Russian troll once questioned me on how you could have a successful economy if the people didn't share one language and one culture. I told that where I live (in the USA) there was never an official language. While English dominates and it may be difficult to get a job in some areas if you do not speak it, there are other languages used. I live in Los Angeles and just in the neighborhood where I live I see and hear Spanish, Farsi, Hebrew, Armenian, Korean, Thai, Tagalog, and Russian almost daily. I mentioned that when I received my ballot information in the last election it contained a page where I could ask to receive the information in 18 languages other than English (including Russian).

Putler once famously described the collapse of the Soviet Union as "the greatest catastrophe of the 20th century." Or perhaps it was "the greatest catastrophe in all of human history." I can't remember exactly which one. He probably meant both. However, the collapse and break up of the ruZZian federation and the demise of Putin and his terrorist state mafia regime following its defeat in Ukraine would be the single greatest event and achievement of the 21st century. Yes, absolutely, let's hear more of your opinion about this potentially wonderful development if you would like to share it :)

Don't know when russia will collapse but I am quite sure it will happen. And Ukrainians can make this happening faster. So the West should send more arms to Ukraine (tanks, fighter jets). I live just 20 km straight line from Mordor border so this question for me is important.

I DO believe the collapse of Russia is not only possible, but is growing ever more likely with each passing day. I fully SUPPORT the collapse of Russia and would happily participate in a direct, most violent and lethal way if I had the opportunity. Anna you mentioned that when a culture and a language dies the world is a poorer place, but I'm sure you'll agree with me the total eradication of the evil, soulless culture of Russia would in fact leave the world a much better, safer, saner place.

It would be interesting to hear about your thoughts on the fall of the Russian Empire. This is definitely a large topic to discuss.
For example will it necessarily happen after it's current President has gone? Could this collapse be somehow similar to the way the Soviet Union collapsed? Will the constituent republics and people's have to get directly involved? Could it even begin before all troops have left Ukraine, e.g. later this year? Will all the constituent republics then rush to join the EU? Should Ukraine act in loco parentis for the new republics?

Beautiful Professor Anna, once again your comments are right on target (no pun intended). It is the highlight of my day when you post a new video! Regarding your opinion on the collapse of the Putin regime, yes please post a video on that subject, I would really like to hear your views. Your comments on Belarus are insightful and demonstrate the true nature of a puppet state. Please keep up the excellent work Ma'am, your lovely voice (and beautiful laugh) needs to be heard. Slava Ukraine!

I am extremely proud to say that there was massive nationwide support for democratic movement in Belarus and protesting Belarusians here in Lithuania 🇱🇹 after 2020 election in Belarus. Democratic Belarusian government and their legitimate president works in here and they are protected by our security services. You could see Belarusian flags (white, red, white) all over the country here in Lithuania 🇱🇹 . When ruskies attacked Ukraine 🇺🇦, focus shifted towards Ukraine 🇺🇦. Still, in a lot of places still you can see all three flags together: Lithuanian 🇱🇹, Ukrainian 🇺🇦 and Belarusian [white-red-white]. We support Belarusian people, their freedom, their fight for democracy, the revival of their own BELARUSIAN language and culture. Maybe because our countries and people always were close and lived in harmony with each other for centuries, we fought the same oppressors [ruskies] even though we are from different ethnic origins and speak completely different languages?
I'm also sad that we were the only country that widely and strongly supported and cared for Belarusians' democracy fight, protests, and their aspirations for freedom.

I think there is a high probability of a sudden change of power in Russia, whether it will also lead to a division I do not know. But the risk of the world's largest nuclear power suddenly turning into several small ones with big ambitions and little wisdom scares me. I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Don't stress out about russia's collapse. This nation is a paper tiger and understands that going nuclear will result in their annihilation by the U.S.A and NATO.

Yes, I would like to hear your views on the collapse of Russia. Personally, I think it is inevitable. Russia is the last traditional empire in Europe. Demographically, ethnic Russians will become a minority in the Russian Federation in the near future. Some other political configuration would probably be best for them. On the other hand, I think it will degenerate into warlordism. Like to know what you think.

Agreed. It is not too early to start thinking about what happens after the last Russian soldier leaves Ukrainian soil (or is placed in it). Russia has already lost, we are now just waiting for the Russian people to realize that fact. So, it will be complicated process with many options... exactly how Russia collapses. And the response from the west will play a part too. I hope the preparations are being made already by the western leadership, while the rsst of us mere mortals are watching the final campiagns of the war to play out.

Yes the Russian Federation needs to be de-federated into 20 or more new nations in which each uses its resources for the benefit of its citizens and none have the scale of resources to wage wars of aggression. In particular, Muscovy needs to be separated from hydrocarbon rich regions that finance its aggression. I would however like to see Muscovy pay reparations to Ukraine without resorting to taking resources from other peoples within the present RF.

Great vlog today. It won't be a catastrophe if Russia is pushed back to their borders. No western nation has any interest in Russia if they could keep their hands to themselves. They have massive lands and considerable resources yet they choose invasion and the wholesale destruction of Ukraine. Putin gambled on this invasion and lost. Moldova is another concern like Belarus and maybe you could comment on what is developing in that country. Slava Ukraini.

There was not the uprising in Belarus like there was in Poland, Ukraine , Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, etc. The west cannot support an uprising that is not popular. If you just have a very small handful of people who want to be free, the west would be no different than Russia if they offered military aid. Once the Belarusians stand up for themselves the west will help.
