A little mincey ego might be to blame here. Careful Icarus, and by Icarus I mean Mark. Who knows what happened before they started rolling but it seemed to me like Mark woke up on the wrong side of bed.

I think because they're both SO extremely quick- witted, damn funny & used to guests who are friends whom they joke back & forth with) that here when several of their one liners fell flat with Franken who simply didnt seem to realize they making jokes that the boys felt self-conscious (they shouldn't have) or badly there was more laughing (again they should have). It was a nice change and still interesting, enjoyable, entertaining.
I think this is what makes Mark a great comic. He has a healthy dose of self-criticalness that compels him to strive for excellence. He's good at bombing gracefully and playing it cool despite experiencing a great deal of anxiety and painful awkwardness in his mind. His bombing is better than my killing it.
That weird moment when you realize you find things other people don't think are awkward awkward, and you find things other people think are awkward not awkward.

I think Mark is good at concealing his anxiety and feelings of awkwardness for what he perceives as a disjointed conversation that didn't flow well. I can relate to social situations in which I felt anxious and awkward but the other people didn't pick up on it.
True. The interesting thing is they were both great with Rick individually but together they get stuck in their unique dynamic and can't be open to the guest.
Props to Mark for standing his ground on things he believes instead of backing down to the older person in the room just because theyve been around longer.

They were trying so much harder to be edgy when they saw that wasn’t his thing, and that itself made it awkward from what I saw. This episode was absolutely solid. There wasn’t anything THAT weird. Couple pauses and nbc being weird with what they can show here and there but it was totally fine.

I think in their minds (esp Mark), they were riddled with feelings of anxiety and awkward chemistry but are good at appearing confident. Mark is a tad insecure and is often hard on himself for having very high standards that he feels like he falls short of.

Awesome episode very cool to see one of the original writers cast members turned politician still be humble enough to chop it up and drink a beer. Next to Burr best podcast on RUclips
I remember his book with comedic skewering of people abusing politics like Anne Coulter from when I was young, "Lies, And The Lying Liars Who Tell Them". His comedic style is pretty dry but builds to a smart sharp point. His background in comedy combined with his political savvy really enabled him to outmanuver and catch his political opponents from directions they couldn't see coming. It is pretty funny to see an ex senator who also had to step down due to a joke taken for sexism and questionable behaviour feel uncomfortable around Mark's style of comedy, probably suffering flashbacks of the cancel mob coming for him. Shane Gillis had the same reaction when Mark was on his podcast multiple times no doubt for similar reasons.

That was so good. Normand refusing to not take big swings is fucking classic, while Sam goes a bit more reverent. Mark makes it "awkward," but there's no way Al didn't leave absolutely loving his chops, and both of them in general. Al's a solid, generous guy, and I definitely give him props for booking a stop with the fresh "new" talent. He has two jobs to straddle, and if you ever listen to him, it's very likely he's running for president if there's an opening. So there were things he definitely couldn't laugh at, because the world sucks. COMEDY!
