angotri is a town and a Nagar Panchayat (municipality) in Uttarkashi district in the state of Uttarakhand, India. It is 99 km from Uttarkashi, the main district headquarter. It is a Hindu pilgrim town on the banks of the river Bhagirathi - the origin of the river Ganges. The town is located on the Greater Himalayan Range, at a height of 3,100 metres (10,200 ft). According to popular Hindu legend, Goddess Ganga descended here when Lord Shiva released the mighty river from the locks of his hair.
A temple dedicated to Goddess Ganga is located near a sacred stone where King Bhagiratha worshipped Lord Shiva. According to Hindu culture, Goddess Ganga took the form of a river to absolve the sins of King Bhagiratha's predecessors, following his severe penance of several centuries. Bhagiratha Shila is a sacred slab where king Bhagiratha meditated. Ganga is believed to have touched earth at this spot. According to another legend, Pandavas performed the great 'Deva Yagna' here to atone the deaths of their kinsmen in the epic battle of Mahabharata. Hindus believe that performing the ancestral rites on the banks of Bhagirathi frees the spirit of the ancestor from the cycle of rebirth and a holy dip in its waters cleanses sins committed in the present also past births.
The Gangotri temple opens on the auspicious day of Akshaya Tritiya which falls in the month of May and closes on Yama Dwitiya or Bhai Dooj which falls in the month of November. The Gangotri temple remains closed for the rest of six months. The Goddess shifts to the village Mukhba during the winter months. In the month of May, Ganga Dussehra is celebrated with great fanfare as the day of the birth of Ganga.
Gangotri is hence known as the origin of river ganges. Gangotri temple is positioned at the centre of the Gangotri Dham.
Gangotri Temple was built by the Nepalese General, Amar Singh Thapa around the beginning of 18th century. The temple was later rebuilt by the Maharaja of Jaipur.
Gangotri Temple presumably follows the Nagara style of architecture. It is simple and constructed with white marble stone. There are no intrinsic carvings as popularly seen in the Hindu temples. There are five small apexes (shikhars), 20ft in height. The main sanctorum or the garba griha is built on a raised platform. There is a mandap in front of the garba Griha where the devotees do the puja and prayer. The inner sanctorum has the idol of Goddess Ganga. It also contains the idols of Goddess Yamuna, Annapurna, Saraswati, Lakshmi. The Idols of Bhagirath and the sage Adi Sankara complete the set of idols present inside the inner sanctorum. Tyhere are four little temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, Ganesha, Hanuman, and Bhagirathi.
Near the Gangotri Temple, there is a natural rock Shivling in submerged under water. You can see the shivling easily when the winters are on their way as the water level decreases during that time. According to myths and legends this was the place where Lord Shiva sat when Ganga accended in this matted locks. Shiva divided Ganga into 7 streams and saved Earth.
Gangotri Temple is the highest temple dedicated to goddess Ganga. The river Ganga originates at Gaumukh. Gaumukh is situated at the foot of Gangotri glacier. River Ganga is known as Bhagirathi here. It gets the name Ganga at Devprayag where Bhagirathi River merges with Alaknanda River.
Gangotri Temple is built close to Bhagirath Shila. It is a pillar where King Bhagirath prayed to lord Shiva to bear the descent of River Ganga. Pilgrims collect the water from the pillar and take it to their homes ad Amrit/Nectar. Amrit is used for various religious and holy purposes.
After defeating kauravas in the battle of Mahabharata, the Pandavas performed Deva Yagna at Gangotri Temple to expiate for the death of their peoples and relatives.
