- Frankenstein by Mary Shelley chapter 12, narrated by Isaac Birchall
The following Morning, the creature, though wanting to join them, decides to maintain his distance, remembering the events in the village. He watches them go about their daily tasks, and remarks their love for each other, but also notes that they are terrible unhappy. The creature could not understand this as they had, food, shelter, clothes, and company. After some time passed, the creature learned of their poverty, noting that they only eat what they can farm, or milk. The creature then decides that instead of taking from their stock of food, that he would gather his own nourishments, deciding to also help in the families gathering of wood during these outings. He then later discovered that they spoke, that they made sounds that could evoke all forms of feelings. He set out to learn how. After many months, he learned the names of the cottagers, and of a few small words. He noted that the father was able to move the children through every emotion, and that if ever they were sad, Father could bring them some happiness. The boy Felix, however, was terribly depressed. After some time, the monster decides that he wants to meet the villagers, but that he cannot do so until he masters their language. As the warmer weather came, the villagers seemed slightly happier, their food was growing, and the weather seemed to bring more joy to them.
