In this video I show the completion of a Harrison 190 overhaul. This includes the completion of the mechanical assemblies as well as the installation of a Digital Read Out sourced from M-DRO
The installation of the digital inverter was greatly assisted by Paul Compton who's RUclips Channel can be found here:

Glad to see it come together. After your previous video I thought you'd be done in a few weeks.
A few years ago while looking for a large lathe (10 HP or so) I found a Harrison 450 in good shape. In Canada
Harrison lathes are not too common, this is the only one I have ever seen. It had a wide range of spindle speeds and gear box settings and needed little work so I bought it. I don't think it had seen much use. We had to repair the spindle brake, and found a loose roll pin in the spindle gears but little else had to be done. I made a big steady rest for it because that was missing. I put a Newall readout on it and made a hand crank gear drive for the tailstock cause it was too heavy to move. Most of my activity is on a Hardinge toolroom lathe but this brute
takes over when the job is big. I'm still working on the hat.

Great video Mr Crispin. I have the M-DRO on the mill. It came with a clear cover, which I always leave on. Protects the screen etc. I have some 3ph to 3ph inverters from when I had my sparky business. I need to get them sold. As they are good quality Jaguar items. When we wanted to limit current spike on startup. We fitted soft start units. Much cheaper than a inverter. Regards
    Steve.

About twelve years ago I had a similar problem to you. A 7-1/2 hp lathe without a clutch in a residential area with a rotary phase converter. I shared a transformer with twelve other houses and every time I started the spindle on the lathe the lights dimmed in all thirteen houses. I looked at a few options and settled on building a pneumatic clutch for it. It took about a month to build and install. I was very lucky that it worked properly right from the beginning (anyone who designs and builds thing knows this is rarely the case). Ironically about a week after I got it installed the power company came by and put me on my own transformer, making the clutch somewhat redundant. I am now back in a shop in an industrial area with a proper three phase power supply. However, the clutch has not given me any trouble in twelve years so I have no plans to remove it. If you are interested I give an overview of my lathe and the clutch in this video: ruclips.net/video/LU4RNPjfKbs/видео.html . I think you did a great job overhauling your lathe. Installing digital readouts on older equipment can be quite a challenge. Ken

Great overhaul of a very nice lathe. Paint doesn’t add much to the serviceability of the lathe and I hate painting. However, I love the looks and feel proud of my equipment when properly presented with a new paint job. Please consider a IGUS cable carrier or equivalent for your digital readout cables and coolant hose. I installed a cable carrier on my Clausing Colchester lathe in the chip pan area behind the lathe bed and it really protects the cables and neatens up the installation.

Love the way you present your content. Subtle humour, easy to understand, and always great machining results.
Your VFD/VSD I notice has the 'Normal' whistle when ramping. There is a setting (in most drives) where you can raise the switching frequency to take it out of the audio range if it is annoying. If not annoying, then there is no need for parameter adjustment.
    Thanks for your content.

Good to see you back! I eagerly look forward to your future videos! I also like how you used the inverter to provide a "soft start" for your lathe -- I'll have to keep that idea in my "toolbox" for future projects if/when needed. (It reminded me of the "soft start" for the "small" wind tunnel I relocated from across the country & installed at work back in the '90s: it ran/runs(?) on 4160 VAC, 3-phase and still pulled ~1500 amps at start-up while using the "soft start" equipment and ~300 amps steady state. It really made the CNC shop angry at first because the surge could cause "problems" with their machines. However, the Facility Electrical Engineer did his magic and "fixed" the problem well enough to minimize problems around the wind tunnel. ;)

Glad to see you're back! Lathe is looking great. I've used M-DRO for the encoders on my lathe as well, they're very convenient. You've maybe come across them, but they also have a magnetic tape style of encoder - compared with the glass scales, the huge benefit is the head is totally non-contact. E.g. the way I've got things set, I can slide the cross-slide off for maintenance without affecting the alignment of the encoder. They're much easier than the glass scales.

This makes me feel much better about having taken up a huge lathe resto and already having had over 7 months run by me... I thought i was a bit too slow, which i am, and a bit too lazy, having taken weeks of breaks in work at a time, but seeing a bit smaller lathe than mine take as much as it did you, i will chalk up my wasting of time as time spent in caution to get things just perfect... None of it is helped by the fact that i just took up a surface grinder to get back into shape, before taking on restoring it fully... Also, if you get an ELB/Aba surface grinder, the company is still existing and running well, but it appears to have a cunt approach to users of its olden machinery in regards to inquiring your tax nr. and address and then promptly not answering you again... I asked for bloody lubricant recommendation as the spindle ``runs`` kerosense or paraffin as lube, which in my mind was a big no no, and all i got was ``do not run kerosene or paraffin as spindle lube!`` with no further answers... Also, no answers in regards to their available spare parts stock for the machine despite giving them the machine serial nr... I took mobil velocite 3 for spindle as its a zero clearance tapered bronze bush with forced oil feed, so i guess its as close to kerosene in regards to viscosity but actually being a bloody lubricant and not a solvent...
Oh, a nice job bringing the lathe back to a lovely state! I suppose a compliment was in order after my bitching about my own troubles... And one thing, i would not have used the sandpaper to grip that oil fitting... I at least hope you cleaned it well afterwards... Sandpaper of any sort is like a leper, sheds its grime and disease all over the place and infects anything it touches... Its good for grinding on a flat pane of glass, but in my shop, there are no abrasives of any kind, except for maybe my attitude and mood...The grinders and abrasives and a polishing lathe are enclosed in their own little solitary cell as they are like the life serving inmates that dont mind murdering others around them for fun... Not something i can have roaming the shop while in not looking, spewing grit and abrasive particles about...

I drilled and tapped and remounted my PM1236 cross slide DRO from where the importer located it. Not to look neat [as was] but so if the cross slide is advanced until the screw disconnects that cross slide is pushed until backsplash contact.. the glass scale will not be broken.

Excellent video. A beautiful machine which solicits no envy from me whatsoever. Many of the constructional features are similar to my Maximat V10P, albeit at a much larger scale. I particularly enjoyed the music, made me feel I was back on parade.
    Best wishes, Dean at Retromeccanica.
