  • DANIEL ARNOLD has held rank for a decade as one of, if not the top, working street photographers in the biz. When he’s not shooting for clients like Vogue and NYTimes, you'll find Daniel roaming the NYC streets, vintage 35mm slung around wrist, always adding to his immense body of work. His decades of dedication and early traction on social media helped cement him on the who’s-who list of must-know photographers. He’s a likable mixture of self-deprecating and incredibly well thought out. Despite him being the envy of many aspiring photographers, he remains a humble and approachable person, happy to shoot the breeze with his many admirers.
In this episode, we spend time in his Brooklyn apartment where he tackles nebulous topics like exploitation and whether or not his cultural commentary shooting the Met Gala is as premeditated as it may appear. He confesses his public persona is far out of his control and how it often motivates him to fulfill the audience's expectations by continuing his obsession.
We head into an NYC Italian street fest to see what catches his eye. It’s as if Daniel hides in plain sight, waiting to stumble upon one of many triggers that motivates him to hit the shutter. When he does, chances are high it’s an image you'll wish you took.

WRONG SIDE OF THE LENS is a documentary series exploring the lives of street photographers. Here, we get a rare chance to turn the camera on those not used to on that side of the lens. We begin to answer the question of why they are so obsession with taking images of complete strangers. They come from a variety of backgrounds yet are drawn to this same calling; street photo. This is a relatively new and, often misunderstood art form, which leaves ample room for these hard working artists to push boundaries. This series captures many of these moments.

Photography is his vessel thru this complex life we artists create. He speaks what I think and you were able to capture. Man, thank you for this. this was beautiful. exactly what i needed to see & hear right now. so poetic, raw and unpretentious. beautifully spoken about the energetic drive behind one who sees these moments and captures them almost beyond a reason, not just a description about the mechanical process of taking “street”photos.
thank you daniel arnold for the work you have made, for being vulnerable and sharing ur creative mind here. i can’t believe i haven’t seen ur work before, but already feel u will be one favorite photographers for inspiration.
i don’t think you speaking about the work & process does any discredit, as u mentioned, yet truly defines the scope of what work like this is conveying at its core. which is: human. human life. the absurdity, the irrationality, the spontaneity, the intimate, the impermanent.
thank u to the individual or team of wsotl. this was beautifully crafted, documented and edited. the visual style and music selection glued the emotion behind the story together perfectly. so unique and inspiring
i’m never the one to leave a comment, none the less something this long winded but i truly am thankful and respect this piece. look forward to binging the next few episodes uploaded

I’ve always appreciated Daniel’s perspective on photography. The part about him discussing exploitation and trying to explain how you can’t document a culture without the people is interesting because I think a lot of people don’t think of themselves as part of a culture. They view themselves as separate which is why some react negatively to being photographed candidly. Also, it could be debated that photographing certain actions such as a woman breastfeeding doesn’t document culture but analysis of societal norms - for example, not that long ago breastfeeding in public was not allowed in many places. To go from living in a place that wasn’t okay with this to now it being commonly done does note a change, but I don’t understand how this captured moment highlights our culture.

wwwoooowww the whole truth about humanity explained...i understand that the real task as a photographer no matter what field you in ,is document the true moments of how hard it is most of the time to exist because life is life and you get the truth from candid shots and the next generation to be exposed to those images rather than those where everyone in the photo is given a moment to gather themselves, fake a smile ....Then they understand that there's nothing they're doing wrong, its just life ,its ok to be sad and only time will heal you and its not always perfect....

This video is incredible. I saw all the Daniel Arnold stuff but I still took so much away. And it’s the best portrait out there. He also seems most content with himself.
