- Destiny's Story and Lore are complicated, especially for a new player who's experiencing the setting for the first time! This is my guide to Destiny's Story that introduces the game's setting to complete beginners in a simpler-to-understand manner. This video covers The Awoken in Destiny.

A small note: when exploring the Dreaming City as an Awoken character, the player Guardian is confirmed to have been a reefborn Awoken - I can’t remember if it’s part of one of the curse loop missions or a line Sedia/the Techeun quest givers in the open world have while you’re idling nearby, but they mention that some of the Corsairs recognize you as you pass at one point.
I've never heard that before thats really cool
That just have me wonder what reason was a reefborn on earth.
Most likely part of the faction that split from Mara to come back to help Humanity rather than hide in the Reef
I've been surprised that not many people know that, I'm glad to see it's getting out there because it's such an interesting piece of lore
@@eliasraine8726 the faction that split from Mara Sov is refer to as the “Earthborn” Awoken; if our Guardian is “Reefborn” Mara Loyalists we would not be on earth or have an assignment on earth potentially from Mara herself. One possibility is that we sent to spy on either the Earthborn or the last city but end up dying.
the awoken will always be the most interesting part of the Destiny universe. magical space evles they are.

As someone who fell out of playing before Shadowkeep and just got back into it, a video for each Season that just covers the high over view of each Season would be really great. There is a lot I know I'm missing and I've been piecing parts together but there is so much I can't get to because it's past seasons.

As powerful as the Awokens are, they could use a smidge of humility. They are mighty but they cannot stand alone against everything and admitting that they sometimes need help would make cooperation with the Vanguard a bit smoother.
I think Vanguard and guardians are the ones who could use some humility. At the moment Awoken are the only ones who actually plan ahead and try to do something about Savathun and the Darkness itself. In the meantime, Vanguard only react to things instead of preventing them, and guardians waste time playing some stupid games in Trials and Crucible...

@@LuxintN7 that’s because (in lore) we don’t have that many guardians we don’t have the numbers to launch a war not the resources. As Zavala says “We’re not an army” we defend the last city
When you are doing patrols in the dreaming city as an awoken, you are referred to as "cousin" compared to "brother" or "sister" when other non guardian awoken refer to their own.

These videos are great even for old-school D1 beta folks like me; never hurts to brush up on the lore and history before a major expansion drops.
Ngl I regret not remaking my character at the start of D2 and I wish we could pay to remake our characters without having to redo and recollect everything lol. I'd pay for it. (Honestly I kinda wish they would revamp character creation as a whole. There are so few choices and I would love to go a little more indepth. )
While not explicitly promised when they retooled how the game handles facial assets last year they did mention that revamping the character creator was on the table.
Tho it's safe to say revamping that is most likely very low priority over other projects, so I frankly wouldn't hold my breath to hard.

I hope we get some options with regard to character creation. The face overhaul they did fucked up my awoken and human guardians pretty bad. plus I'd like to be able to switch my exo to an awoken. I made him on a whim for D2 thinking he'd get erased when my bungie account synchronized my D1 stuff, but I managed to screw that up somehow

While Mara is indeed a powerful and clever ally, she isn't that great of a person.
She likes to spin around these mysteries and secrets, and despite the fact we are now in an official alliance with her, she still keeps us in the dark. She even got pissed when Ghost questioned her methods and merely asked for some accountability.
Mara also likes to paint this picture where she's a humble and benevolent ruler, when in reality she's egotistical and is willing to throw the lives of her subjects into certain death. She brags about raising the Dragon that drove her brother insane, how she cheated death all thanks to powers not entirely of her own, and how she's the Queen of a Kingdom she neglected and left to fend for itself.
And don't get me started on how she treated Uldren. She nurtured his dependence on her, treated him like a lap dog while dangling her love like a prize. And who's fault is it that Uldren was left all alone, that he was able to be manipulated and driven insane? Mara's fault. And yet she takes no responsibility.
The truth about Mara is that she's no Queen. She's a control freak who brainwashed her own people into revering her like she was a god.
Mara is no queen at the moment because she sacrificed her people and, as a result, her kingdom to give us a chance against Oryx.
And when exactly was she "painting" anything? She was always sincere with us, she never even tried to hide the fact that she doesn't like guardians. She told the truth about her relationsip with Uldren - the very truth people now seem to hate her for - because she knew it was important for us to understand Crow better.
And instead of ending Savathun right there and then, Mara keeps preparing for a ritual to give us a chance to get Osiris back.
@@LuxintN7 The Ritual isn't necessarily to get Osiris back. The true purpose of the Exorcism is to remove Savathûn's Worm, and in doing so strip Savathûn of her powers. That way, when we kill her, she's not going to respawn back at her Throne World. Osiris is more so being used as insurance against us, Mara's just playing along.
Mara Sov doesn't really see Crow as his own person. She even planned on him dying and becoming a Lightbearer so she can "wield" Uldren as a more powerful being. Essentially she only cares about Crow because she thinks she can twist and mold him back into Uldren.
As for when Mara sacrificing her fleet to give us a chance at killing Oryx, yeah I get that. But did she really needed the whole fleet when she could've just used the Harbingers? The Fleet wasn't even that useful, the Harbingers did all the work. Wouldn't it have been better if Mara just brought with her a smaller force as an escort, and just use the Harbingers to take care of the Hive Fleet? Also, don't forget that NONE of her people even knew what the entire plan was! The only people who knew Mara's whole plan were the Techeuns. Petra didn't know, Uldren didn't know. No one else. The Awoken all probably thought that they could all destroy Oryx because of Mara. In short, Mara gave them false hope so they could be used as pawns.

@@LuxintN7 The problem is that she wassn’t telling her brother or people what she has told us. The lore cards aren’t always common knowledge and are often closely kept secrets. Most of what we know about her is either privileged info or something that only the queen herself knows.
@@elitegamer9310 in one of the recent lore entries Mara tells Savathun she could just send Savathun into the sun and be done with her. She wouldn't do that only because she wants to keep her word.
I honestly do hope we get to visit the Distributary sometime in the Destiny storyline.

I don't think the Distributary should *ever* be touched. Even ignoring the logistics issues of a location where time is dilated to such an obscene degree, going to and from the Distributary required truly unknowable effort the exactly two times it's ever happened. Having it be a landing zone you can load into and then immediately leave because you forgot to grab gunsmith bounties would complete cheapen it. Let it be a cool, impossible space we never truly know. No faster way to ruin the mystery and awe of a place than let us dumbasses fall off a cliff on it.
@@The5lacker We could possibly see it in a film, show (animated would be much easier), or some of those Bungie comics. After all, they are going to expand to other forms of media.
So what we can’t see in the game we can see on tv sir comics, including the Distributary!
@@The5lacker Truly, if Reef citizens were to try and mingle with their coethnics they've left behind it wouldn't be pretty, given how they attempted to shoot down the ship which Mara led out of the system
The awoken are powerful allies, but my god Mara can be an asshole sometimes
While she would argue, “it’s for the greater good”, I feel that the writers are setting up a type of punishment for Mara’s unchecked ego and sense of entitlement, in the form of Savathun outwitting Mara and returning as a lightbearer to cause her and the Guardians, more pain. This isn’t the first time Mara’s plans have gone awry due to her overconfidence and hubris. While Mara is a secretive and difficult to work with, ally. Hopefully, she’ll learn humility and what it means to be humble by the end of this season.
And Zavala can’t?

I feel like we should use the Awoken’s name of The Battle of Saturn; The Flashpoint. (As stated this season) great video I feel like I’m in a class room full of new Guardians being taught our history and honestly there should be an animation like that a comparing these videos.
When you realize that next year some new lights will never know who cayde is, I shall return soon.

This series is genius. We NEED people like you byf. Destiny is changing weather we want it or not and even though thwre is a timeline now....it skips the most important and interesring parts. (I say they should have the option where you press the section that it shows you which lore books are valuable to read and give context for that time period)
With destint changing things need to be archived and you are doing a great job. May i reccomend the sturm and drang lore card as a little smaller video? Or perhaps a video on how calus turned some weapons into the weapons we seen in opulence. Yeah they are smaller but small is good sometimes
They already have been archived and for sometime now.
It always makes me smile when one of the corsairs refers to me as cousin. In most scenarios like this in other games, you're always the ubiquitous outsider who can never fit in. So it's nice to feel like I have two homes.

If I remember the lore on this topic well enough, it went something like ''no hunter would ever want to be forced into a desk job''...but what if, maybe, we didn't put a ''real'' hunter in the spot?
_Thoughts on multi-classing?_ One day, I felt like making up a bit of backstory for my character, Short version - Get's risen as a Warlock; Doesn't like gliding; Demands his ghost to give him Hunter powers; Ends up ducttaping a Dawnblade to an Arcstaff. Does anything at all similiar happen is some forgotten codex entry?
Once this series is completed I think a series on some of the major characters (Lord Shaxx, Ada-1, Amanda Holiday, etc) would be a good follow up and videos that have already been made such as the one for the Thorn and Last Word could be added to the list for anyone who is interested in specific characters.
I do wonder if we'll ever get the ability as a player to create an Eliksni guardian... At least from what House Light stands for, they seem to have redeemed themselves. I wonder if the Traveler has seen this, and would be willing to give ghosts the go-ahead to resurrect them and guide them towards Misraaks.
Love this new series
A video on The Nine, past actions/interactions, lore and possible future plans would be good. I originally hoped that The Nine were going to be positioned as a 3rd power opposing Light and Dark, and that after we learned to wield the darkness and the light they were going to make themselves known to us. They seem to have gone silent thought, unless I missed some lore somewhere.
You tell the story of destiny so much better then the game actually presents it. Not taking a shot at destiny by saying that. I love the game. Watching the videos on this channel breathed so much more life into it for me tho

I have a feeling that the writers may save Failsafe from being written out of the story, to revitalize her character. Similar to how Rasputin may return in a different form, becoming a closer ally to us. It goes without saying the Warmind has a bit of an ego. Though, not as bad as Mara, “I ruined my family and people’s lives but won’t admit it” Sov.
Good think it will remain for another expansion.

Petra already said she thinks Osiris is dead, and that probably means Mara thinks so too. I mean I honestly think Mara is up to something, she’s already making threats to send savuthun into the sun thus letting one of the most powerful beings in the universe know she’s about to be killed. Like Mara is very smart and I don’t think it’s just her arrogance on this one.. I think Mara knows savathun wouldn’t just ask for help realizing we would kill her after and leave it to chance, I’m calling it now Mara IS INVOLVED WITH SAVATHUN.

i dont know if its included in your schedule for this series or not but something that i think would help new light players or newer players in general is to define the backstory of the prominent tower members. I'm not just talking about Ikora or Zavala, but characters like Cayde and his death, Ana Bray, and Amanda Holiday
One thing about prince's spy network. In the video, there are crows mentioned, as drones. But don't forget about Crows as people (capital letter), Uldren's men.
It’s interesting how similar the Distributary’s situation was to that of the Garden of Eden, Asgard, or other mythical paradises: it fell to ruin and division due to an internal or external force inciting manipulation and deceit. While the Awoken that stayed in the Distributary would remember Mara as a hypocritical, cruel villain and a manipulative traitor, she did it for the greater good. There is still so much we don’t know about the Witness. If it can travel across the universe from galaxy to galaxy in the cosmos, take and transform planets, manipulate objects and creatures with physics defying gravity, and distort dimensions, who’s to say it can’t find and destroy the Distributary? The Awoken there may still be doomed.

I play as a Awoken Hunter, but I reallyyyy don't like Mara. I dislike manipulative characters like her, no matter what justification she gives (or doesn't, because she doesn't feel the need to do so.) Her plans often fail and she has been nothing but a detriment to her people, causing massive casualties (all to take Oryx's throne world, something I noticed you spoke of differently in the video, Lore Daddy. I don't recall it being hers from the start, but rather she sacrificed her fleet to take it from him, but I could be mistaken) and rewarding loyalty with more trials. She drove Uldren to his fall and tried to blame it on others. She called Cayde an "it", which is when I went from not liking her to hating her. I honestly don't understand her peoples blind loyalty to her, it's levels of simping that shouldn't be possible. Commander "Whether We Wanted it or Not", "Zuzuvuela" himself is preferable to me. Even Tess "If you've got the silver Eververse has the goods" Everis is more likable to me. I do hope that at the end of this season Mara gets humbled and grows from it, but right now she seems almost sociopathically certain that she is always right. I do think Savathun was right to say that they are the same creature.
She's always been like this. I mean there have been several civil wars for a reason lol.
Mara is clearly narcissistic to some degree. She could've created any society imaginable for her people, and deliberately chose a totalitarian government over a democratic one. The fanatic level of devotion that the Reefborn Awoken have for her can only come from a cult of personality. She has a telepathic link to every Awoken everywhere, so she can keep tabs on them even in their own heads. She emotionally abused her brother and treated him like a tool rather than a person. She's totally unable to admit any of her many, many failings. None of these are indicative of a healthy, well-adjusted mind.
I would love to hear about the hive unless you alrighty covered that yet I’m a new player of destiny dont even have forsaken yet please do story on hive for me and others thanks later Byf
I'm sure he'll get to it in this series, he hasn't done any of the enemy races yet. However, if you can't wait, you can search for an older set of videos he did on the Books of Sorrow (sorry, my phone hates sharing links). I hear there will be an updated version of that with stuff we've learned in the last few years, but it's still interesting.

I have a suggestion for (some) videos.... how about doing a series detailing the story of Destiny as of initial release of D1 and every season/dlc. Kinda like a walkthrough of the story. not expecting it, but that would be a nice little project.

Ok so.. Zaval is an awoken, and helped build the last city. the reef born came from the distributary and uldren reported a “city” under the traveler and humanity persisted. ..how small is that time gap? and obviously Zaval was one who left with Mara?
The "city" before the Last Safe City was basically just a giant refugee camp under near constant threat. But it was the only large settlement in all of Sol. Alot of Earthborn died en route from the Reef to Earth, I think because they were using normal ships instead of Jump Drives, and a bunch have been Risen, including Zavala.
Zavala died on touchdown on Earth; when he was first revived, he was inside a crashed ship.
There was no timeframe between when he died and was revived, but its postulated to be a couple months at least: there were skeletons surrounding his body, so the Awoken who died with him had completely decayed.
It might then be only another couple months before Zavala made it to the Last City, so it might not even be a year since Zavala left the Reef before he stumbled across the City as a Guardian.
Edit: and yes, he was one of Mara's Awoken before he became a Guardian. One of the Techeun (I think it was Sedia) knew of Zavala in his first life. And funnily enough, commented despite his death and rebirth, his personality had not changed much.

So, is the Dreaming City in meatspace, in the Reef? Sometimes it sounds like it is (Caiatl wanting to nuke it, etc), but then other times it sounds like it's in that astral juju. And does all this mean there's a whole Awoken civilization millions of years more advanced than us still hanging out and cozy in the Distributary?
So does Mara know the Awoken Guardians' past? I play as an Awoken and this has bothered me for the past couple weeks.
Chances are. She's aware of many things but also has a deep bond to all awoken and can feel them from far stretches of the world. Even though the earth born and reefborn are separate she would still have that connection
No. Mara does not know everyone or everything and Mara is cut off from the Earthborn Awoken and Awoken Guardians. According to Sedia the Awoken Guardian is Reefborn. She talks about several of the Corsairs recognising them from before they died, during a conversation about how when Awoken lose their friends, family and lovers they wonder if they will become Guardians.

Ive been thinking since beyond light, would awoken guardians be more adept at controlling darkness subclasses by default? In my thinking theyd be more ideal for it than other races

Can Exo's reproduce without sourcing the consciousness of a living human? Like reproduce a new Exo from a existing Exo/s? Or is it a dying race?
If anything, you could probably repair / produce Exo's.
No. But with the rediscovery of the Deep Stone Crypt new exos could potentially be created, if it were to be restored to full functionality.

OMG I just realized so went crow left you mentions about how he had the paracausal ship we found and you reminded me that. Could you imagine if he went to the distributery ??? Like he doesn’t know it existed now but what if he though that he wanted to go to the the place the true awoken woke up ???????
Spaghettification is the horrible eternal death that will eventually take you to the second dimension aka thin layer of matter and eventually the first a dot an furthermore below the power of void, arc is opposite to boron aka poison, so void is the path to lower levels of existence so taken should be higher levels in theory if they are opposites

If the darkness is an enemy, why would they give us power and help us? That doesn't make sense.
Sometimes sweet words and gifts are better tools then violence, clearly the voice in the darkness seeks to sway us to serve it's whims and tried to "bribe" us with Stasis.
But thanks to Elsie Bray we shaped Stasis into something we use for the good of the city, proving that darkness isn't inherently evil, only that some use it for evil, like the voice in the darkness.
Here to tempt us, give us things we want but not what we need. Killing our own people in the lore, wants us to kill each other to prove our worth. The Darkness is NOT our friend
Through their gift it's possible to be corrupted, it all depends on the person though. In all other timelines our Guardian fell to temptation and corruption just like anyone else, and was a member of the Dark Guardians led by Eris Morn. This timeline seems to be different so far, with our Guardian and less other Guardians falling to corruption. Reyzl Azzir, Dredgen Yor, was the first Guardian t be corrupted, and he wielded the Thorn to perma-kill Guardians. There are still Dark Guardians today, but much fewer at the moment.
They are paracausal forces on that scale nothing is evil or good because maybe death really is our salvation and this life is just a lie which the traveller wants to keep feeding us.

It’s been said many times that awoken possess magic. What powers do these include, and how far do the abilities of an awoken go? Are such powers limited to certain ranks, or are all awoken capable of certain abilities?
Does anyone happen to know which video did Byf cover Shayura and her intense bias against Stasis Guardians?
I'm very new to this I would like to know more of past involving light and the dark what is the traveler what are the dark triangles and how these forces have affected Races such as the kabal the fallen or the hive

@@SymbioteMullet maybe if Petra has anyone who’s severely crippled. At the same time we’d need Clovis’ research. Which we have most of. But we’d also need some way to manage his process safely.
That should be a yes, but then another question; would their brain data be corrupted? Would they have fragmented memories or any memories at all of events that took place before their dormancy?
+Symbiote MulletAtraks-1 was a fallen exo. The awoken share more similarities with humans than the fallen do. I assume it'd be as smooth a transition as it were for humans and Fallen exos, and they'd be "as they were" only in exo form... right?

Then we could actually have them with us like the Awoken. There’s even a room for them right next to the Awoken portal. Just like a room for Cabal allies as well.
in forsaken crows visions of mara is actually savathune i know it because in the last mission of forsaken mara says " free me o guardian mine" if you are following the story you know savathune said in the first cut seen for the season "you all redy know o guardian mine" this sentence " o blank mine" is something savuthune uses allot my name is byfe got a great video on this sentence check it out i think savathune showed crow who he was to hate mara this is all her plan savathune is never just nice like she sounds to be thx for reading
That was actually riven doing that. But yes it was Savathûn behind the entire thing.
I kind of wish the race you choose has a stat boost from the start it would have been a pretty good modifier even if it was minor.
Each to there own, I personally agree with Bungie statement back before D1 launched that something like race should be picked because ya like how they look, not because ya feel forced to by gameplay affecting stats.

Mara and the awoken should have only spent a few months/years in the Distributary and not millions of years.
Unless the distrbutory is independent of time in Sol and runs on its own speed. Which doesnt break the lore but the breaks the rules of black hole time dilation. 😕
You're right. However the Distributary is located within the black hole, and we have no idea whether or not the same laws apply there

I mean we know this according to special theory of relativity that if you are too close to a high gravity celestial object time around you tends to be slower but we have never gone inside a blackhole and so we don't even know if gravity even exists inside a blackhole because a blackhole essentially has so much gravity only due to its huge mass , now inside a blackhole there may be some other interactions which bring forth an opposite effect.
So since we are born on earth that would make all Awoken guardians earth born Awoken right? Otherwise why would we have been there.

ok, this is a question thats just been bugging me whenever I do something like battlegrounds. Theres lore about how most races can become bigger, but how did people like Kargen or Ixel get so big? cabal dont have acess paracausel stuff, the hive do, fallen have ether that makes them larger, scorn as well, and Vex can just be made in different sizes. how do cabal become the size of tanks? i dont get it.

When the Awoken left the distributary with Mara, they chose to leave the Reef and travel to Earth. Awoken were still immortal, meaning they couldn’t die of old age, yet they could still die all the same. Earthborn Awoken may have become Guardians after dying years ago during the Dark Age or later. As Earthborn Akwoken chose to travel to Earth to aid humanity, this is why they are called Earthborn Awoken instead of Reefborn, as they are no longer considered Awoken of the Reef. It’s not clear when Mara returned to the Sol System, so their is no telling when a Earthborn Awoken died.
Does anyone know the lore card or other source about amethyst being able to indentify when Riven was about to make a wish happen? I never heard about it before and it sounds like an amazing piece of lore, would love to read up on it.
So does Mara know who our own awoken guardian was before being risen. Does she know Zavala?
While no mention of a player awoken there is indeed lore that nods to the fact folks at the reef knows of pre guardian Zavala, one even remarking he's just as much of a no nonsense, by the books guy in that old life too.
No. Mara does not know everyone or everything and Mara is cut off from the Earthborn Awoken and Awoken Guardians. According to Sedia, the Awoken Guardian is Reefborn. She talks about several of the Corsairs recognising them from before they died, during a conversation about how when Awoken lose their friends, family and lovers they wonder if they will become Guardians.
According to Petra, Sedia knew Zavala in his past life and that she says that he hasn’t changed much.

What do you mean? This video is on the story of the awoken. Most of this happened hundreds or thousands (or even billions) of years before we were a thing, depending on how you look at it lol. The world of Destiny is massive, there is so much story, we are miniscule in comparison to everything. Destiny is not a game in which we as players are the absolute center of the story. And we never really have been, there have been quite important points that we are a part of but we aren't the center of it.
If we make comparisons to Warhammer 40k, the Awoken are a lot like the Craft world Eldar. Powerful magic, secretive, long to live and slow to reproduce, massive superiority complexes and whole ass trees stuck up their asses. Just thought that was funny.
I still don't get why some of them (including Mara) left the Distributary, and it's not really explained either. They could have lived in eternal peace there. They declared themselfes as a seperate unit after departing from earth, like "we give a damn where we came from, don't attack us". So, why all of the sudden they cared for Sol later?
During the collapse when the darkness attacked Earth, Mara felt guilt for leaving humanity behind. It’s in the marasenna lore book in the Cosmogyre II entry. That guilt stayed with her even when she became the first of the awoken and why she led her followers back to Sol.

Unpopular opinion, but take everything surrounding Mara Sov with a grain of salt. We have seen that she is prone to overconfidence, boasting, and a need to maintain control at all times,
Given everything that she has done it would make sense for her to have these qualities
It seems to be a mainstream opinion these days, sadly. While Mara wants power, she used and keeps using that power to protect the world. She could have ignored the problems of humanity and stayed with her people as a queen, just ruling them and enjoying her power in safety. Instead, she sacrificed her people and herself to give us, guardians, a chance to win. She sacrificed her power and kingdom to do so. Now she and her techeuns are the only ones who can do something about Savathun - and again, Mara could have killed Savathun already (and she really wants to do that). But instead of taking revenge, Mara works with guardians to give us a chance to rescue Osiris.
