So much easier for drum comps, especially since I use 9 drum mics. REAPER just gets better and better, IMHO the best DAW on the planet. Thanks, Kenny!

This solves a lot of headaches for multi-mic takes. Great work, Kenny!

FINALLY!!!!! This is the reason I've continued to use Pro Tools for the last few years because comping multiple tracks in Reaper was such an epic pain in the ass. Now I can fully convert to Reaper.

Really great. Gives me the confidence to move on from using takes.

Yeah. I'm not sure I'll be using them anymore. But luckily, they'll always be there if we need them.

The new lanes feature is something of a game changer for speeding up workflow in drum recording. Thanks Kenny. 🎉

so much better than using old Take lanes, where one would have to be really careful and lock items in a track to prevent any accidents :)

Kenny, thank you for this tutorial. I just did some drum tracks(2 mics) with our drummer. Needed this to do some clean up/punch in and now we can comp. Thanks brother!

This is WAAAYYY better than the previous method! If I recorded the drum tracks with the old takes settings, is there a way to change them to this set up?

Thank you so much for your video. I have a question. How can I group the takes in an already existing multitrack recording on Reaper 6?

  • @Markplaysmusic

I'm trying to get my drums to record on separate tracks although the input is only stereo from the electronic drum brain without having record several takes. I think I may need to see if the unit has midi then I can use drum fx app to choose the best kit for the take and go in one.

Thanks Kenny! One thing I struggle with when comping multitrack drums is; sometimes the take I want is slightly out of time, or not aligned right with the previous edit. How can I stretch or shift one take while leaving the other takes where they are?

I actually was doing the same thing (slicing, chosing and rendering best) with takes without any problems. So don't really get the point what are the lanes for? They duplicate Takes

    • @MrAlFuture

I thought the same thing and have been a happy user of takes for a long time.
I thought I'd give lanes a go on a couple of recent projects and the main thing I found easier is keeping track of take numbers for making notes and communicating with the artist around comping. With Takes, things could get confusing with dropping into sections (e.g. vocals) and some items having many more or fewer takes. With lanes, even with dropping in you can choose to rearrange items on specific lanes if it makes it easier to treat a lane as a "take" for discussion purposes, even if it was made up of various dropped in sections.
I'm not explaining myself very well, but once I got used to the ergonomics of lanes I'm finding it more convenient for some situations.
Also, the idea of a saved "Comp" is much more concrete with lanes compared with saving comps of take choices the old way... not to mention accidentally switching takes because an item was selected and not realising until later. Also, it's easier to copy a comp and tweak it and compare back and forth between comps with the lanes approach.
I think there is probably a case for both styles in different circumstances.

Takes are based on items. Lanes are based on the whole track. So you can have many items on different lanes that are different sizes. Takes need to all be the same size.

Sometimes it seems to me that "Reaper 7" is all about lanes.
So many tutorials dedicated to this same subject on RUclips.

It doesn’t work for me! I did exactly what you showed and I ended up with 3 takes that all play together on playback! I don’t understand what I could possibly be doing wrong? Any thoughts? Thanks.

Hi Kenny, if you forget to group the drum tracks before recording takes can you group after and still edit multiple tracks like this?
