- This ep gave me whiplash LOL
Anime audio reduced from 14:31 - 16:29 - I used YT's erase song feature after getting flagged for the 3rd time for the same copyright claim on the songs in this ep and....it's alright - not the best, but it'll do 💀

Frieren is easily my #1 favorite anime of all time. Not too many shows convey emotion and subtlety as well as this, and fewer still perform at the same levels of "show and not tell". Looking forward to seeing your future reacts
Indeed, on all points you made.
In my top 3 actually because of One Piece and SNK
fights? got beautiful fights.
horror? yeah the demon girl who a ate a daughter.
romance? chef's kiss
comedy? awesome
awesomeness? himmel and his fake sword.
and the overall portrayal is tuned down so when there's an emotional/scenic part it makes it more emotional.
and every 5th still shot is an 8.5/10 beautiful proper illustration.
Fun fact: Back in June, a knife attack happened in Taiwan and a civilian stopped it. When they interviewed him, he said "It's something the Hero Himmel would've done"
I’m going to start using that now
The 2nd bottle on poured on Heiter's grave is the one he was holding when he met Fern. Since that day he stopped drinking.
OHHHHH
@@kriskilins The show is full of such small details which makes the story more colorful.
Suggestion for the future:
Episodes 8, 9, and 10 are best watched in a single sitting. Some disagree with this but it's mostly accepted. The second half of episode 7 through the first half of episode 11 is a single arc, and the events of 8/9/10 flow into each other.
You, of course, don't have to watch them together, but I would strongly recommend having some care with your schedule so it remains an option, because it takes a lot of self control not to IMO.
The good and bad(for your emotions) news is that this anime is a master class on how to actually use flashbacks well.
SO true. It might be the only show where I can actually get excited about an episode that is mostly flashbacks (you know the one I mean). Nearly every time there's a flashback, it's like "hooray! more backstory/world-building!"
@@aediusbarbatus "hooray! more backstory/world-building!" then "oh no the emotional damage".
@@andrewlucaschism I don't know what you're talking about; I keep watching this show over and over BECAUSE of the emotional damage. 😅
Actually, to get serious for a second because this comment reached me at just the right/wrong moment, I would argue it's not emotional damage, but the pain of emotional *healing.* We're all such damaged creatures precisely because we don't have the kinds of deep and meaningful bonds and experiences that we see in this show. So when we DO see it, some old wound or another inside us tears open - and yeah, it hurts, but now it can start to heal properly instead of just scarring over like it did before.
...or like, I don't know, sometimes sh*t is just sad. But even that isn't *damaging.* It's usually more like bittersweet when it happens in a flashback. The emotional *DAMAGE* happens during Himmel's funeral, and we see that in real time. The way she's having flashes of memories, punctuated by the rhythmic sound of dirt hitting the top of the coffin? That was just MEAN. It wasn't even in the manga! The director just wanted to hurt us! Such a betrayal, after earning our trust with Bocchi the Rock. 😉
Something that I love about this episode and I don't know if a lot of viewers really appreciate it is the moment in the herbalist's shop when Frieren asks Fern what she's hiding. It's such a small thing, but the body language portrayed in that scene - Frieren looking down from behind, Fern sort of instinctively leaning back into her to look up - is one of three moments in the show where I feel they really demonstrate a deep familial bond even if they're not comfortable talking about their feelings (or, at this point in the show, much of anything). As a parent, that body language immediately jumps out at me as that of a parent and child. For me personally it almost feels even more meaningful, since Frieren seems Autistic-coded and my own kid and I are both neurospicy.
I don't want to spoil anything, but the other two similar moments are in episode 4 (so you've probably already seen it by the time I'm typing this) and episode 17. The creators of the manga clearly have such an amazing understanding of people's hearts and minds through every stage of life, and Madhouse did an unbelievable job bringing that to the screen in subtle touches just as much as in the more obviously impressive scenes. I've been watching anime (off and on) for like 30 years and Frieren instantly became my all-time favorite. It's peak, from start to finish. You're going to love it.
Funny you mention that because I remember feeling drawn in to that body language too during that scene! It felt very much as you described and I couldn’t really put my finger on it at the time but it really speaks volumes to that bond they share!
This episode had several excellent examples of symbolism with Himmel as Sky.
When Heiter fell, we saw the massive rain storm. Himmel was crying.
When Heiter tells Fern about his lost friend in the flashback, the backdrop is a clear blue sky.
When Frieren finds the Blue Moon Weed, she is framed against a beautiful sky, showing Himmel is with her and happy.
Dude I love that so much - I’ll keep these moments of symbolism in mind for the next video!
Frieren is such a beautiful anime series, and I'm so glad that you're doing reactions to it, #KrisKilins. The animation and visuals of this series are absolutely stunning.
Thank you for sharing 😊
Yes, episode two pulls at the heartstrings twice with Heiters death and Frieren discovering the blue flowers after the flashback with Himmel who wanted to show them to her. The music in this scene is amazing as well and as much responsible for evoking feelings as the great writing is. Oh, and remember the flashback when Frieren created the field of flowers for future references.
By the way: Interesting fact the old lady offered: The blue flower has vanished and not been seen for decades. Who died decades ago and loved those flowers? Yeah, somehow I see a connection there...the author is too good to just mention that without it being relevant some time later. It hasn't yet so this isn't a spoiler but I'm still convinced it will be some time down the line.
And studio Madhouse is flexing a bit with the awesome animation when Frieren moves her hand behind one of the flowers!
This episode is also a good example of how the anime is structured! In general, each episode consists of two chapters of the manga: Here one chapter ends with the death of Heiter and Frieren pouring the booze on the grave and the hunt for the blue flower is the next chapter.
It won't always be so obvious where one chapter ends and the next begins, but it is a nice detail to look out for.
No new relevant German names in this episode but I will keep you informed with translations when they turn up in future episodes. Also, great that you listened to the advice of doing this one individually and 3/4, 5/6 etc. together! Looking forward to your reaction to episodes 3 and 4! 🙂
God the animation and especially the blue flower scene with her hand was GORGEOUS ugh 😩
My goodness there’s so many subtle cues and hints dropped throughout, truly incredible! The music is also spectacular! I wish I could have it louder in the video but animation studios are soooooooo hard to work with on RUclips! They catch everything
@@kriskilins The ED has lots of flower-related imagery as well and much of it references the characters.
The food in this series should be listed as a trigger, for munchies.
この作品の世界が大好きなんだ🧡
作者にはずっと寄り道しててほしい😌笑。
Another peak episode 🔥
havent even heard of this series, will have to add it to Wyrms and my list!
Squirrel can be written in Japanese as 栗鼠 which literally translates to (according to google translate) “chestnut mouse/rat” so the seed rats are just squirrels with a mistranslated name
in retrospective, it would have been probably faster to go to Himmel's hometown to look for the flowers than to search them around, there might have been still there
First of all, I don't understand English so I apologize if my English is a bit weird.
I'm sure you know this, but even with English subtitles, names of people and places are in German.
Also, this anime places great importance on the dialogue, and it's full of great quotes.
Also, this is a work that places more importance on inner feelings than flashiness.
Also, YOASOBI's OP has an English version called "The Brave".
Please give it a listen if you like.
I was unaware of the English version of the OP song. Thank you for mentioning this.
I wish you would keep the reaction to the opening and ending on the video :P even if muted due to copyright
Not the next video but the one after I can throw it in!!
🎉🎉🎉🎉
It's unfortunate you have to cut so much of the music because it is key to evoking so much of the emotion of the scenes, like when Frieren finds the blue moon weed.
Trust me I KNOW!! I find RUclips is pretty anal and consistent about the music for Frieren, this was my third edit too and even with the music lowered each time they still caught it 😭
Evan Call really hit it out of the park with the soundtrack. Apparently he was able to adjust the music to sync with the animation. Incredibly impressive.
Such a tragically romantic episode about collecting flowers. Having said that its crazy how many people sware up down sideways this is recommend for boy's 13-18 whats defined as a shounen. Dont get me wrong anyone can enjoy frieren but the only people complaining about it r boy's 13- 18 and sure enough you'll have some "chad" arguing to me about what his made up definition of shuonen means because he's emotional he was tricked into watching a romance and cant figger out how to use Google b4 arguing such definitions
You like it or not, Frieren is the best anime (2023) it can be equal to One Piece in term of story telling, charac develop, world building, flash back❤
I’m honestly so impressed with everything it has to offer thus far and so early in! 💛
