  • This is my remastered version of the skyscraper cutscene where Romeo gets mauled by a brute chieftan. Had a lot of fun reworking this piece, and definitely learned a lot.

    UPDATED VERSION HERE: ruclips.net/video/9EKVHmo2M-E/видео.html
For those who preferred the original, here is a simplified version that only uses my graphical enhancements and expanded sound design. I hope you enjoy.
There's been quite a bit of feedback on this video, and I would like to quickly address some of it. The purpose of the project was simply to give the community a fresh perspective on this cutscene, and to bring attention to some things that may not be prominent in the original, while also improving on the textures and sounds. I understand that some prefer the original pacing and camerawork. Fair enough. I've read all of your comments, and your critiques have been noted. I shall try to improve my editing in future projects. Regardless, thanks for the likes and views! They do mean a lot to me.

The phantom felt like it came in a little too slowly as the idea was that it caught them completely off guard. Apart from that the new dialogue and sound effects as well as angles of the shots were spot on, well done

The animation for this was pretty solid! The lighting and rendering are very good as well. The only thing that I could say that could use a bit of improvement is the cinematography/framing. Some shots are very well done, but a few of them felt just a little off. Some shots felt like they should have been punched in a little more, and some seemed to have needed to align better with the rule of thirds.

    • @ironsidemedia
      @ironsidemedia  Месяц назад +16

Thanks for the feedback. I actually can't take any credit for the animation, since this is all the in-game render of the cutscene. I just reshoot the cutscene in freecam mode, then add all of my visuals and sounds after. Any chance you could timestamp the shots you think could be improved? I'm still developing my director's eye, and it would be helpful to see what others are noticing.

@@ironsidemedia Ah, ok. I wasn't sure if this was still in game, thought maybe it was reanimated. Here are some of my nitpicks/feedback. Note that this criticism is in no way the "correct" way to do things and are just my opinions formed based on my knowledge of filmmaking.
0:27 I think the shot should have had Romeo aligned a little more to the left of the screen, and the framing a little lower.
0:42/0:43 Buck should be aligned more to the left rather than center.
      0:54 to the right.
1:00-1:13 was phenomenal. very good. but at 1:13, the shot could be angled a little more to the left, or have Romeo aligned to the right side of the frame rather than centered.
I think the biggest sin that was committed in this was the breaking of the 180-degree rule at 1:20-1:23. The camera should not have been at the position it was at 1:20. The shot itself was great, however when you break the 180 rule it can disorient the viewer. For example, he got launched from left to right, but then in the next shot it seems he got launched from right to left if that makes any sense at all.
1:31 the camera could be brought down a little more, and then the 180 rule is broken again switching to 1:34. There was a very small shot around 1:41 that happened for a second. This shot could have been exempt. When you have very short shots they can be sometimes jarring and make the viewer feel like they missed something.
1:47 seemed a little awkward. maybe a side profile would have looked better here.
1:49-1:55 had more 180 rule breaks - the shots look very good, but you should still definitely keep in mind if you are breaking the 180-degree rule. I was very guilty of breaking this rule for the sake of pretty shots, so don't feel too bad about it.
2:17 is a very good example about why the 180-degree rule is important. At 2:17 he comes from left towards the right, so you would expect the momentum to come from the left, however at 2:18 the momentum is coming from the right which feels weird, because the viewer would be expecting a continuous motion coming from the left.
2:35 good shot, but maybe frame Dutch just a little more to the left.

Solid animation but the choreography is off. Thing that immediately struck me about this was how slow it was. The original scene was FAST, and it was absolutely believable that the Chieftain did the damage it did within those few seconds with how fluid its movement was moment to moment. There were no instances where it just stopped like it did in this, not until it slowed down to try and finish Romeo off - and that was exactly what bought the rest of the team the few seconds they needed to dogpile it.
This felt a little off during that immediate halt in pacing during the wind up with Romeo down. All gunfire stopped despite multiple people still being up, and that was easily a moment where they could've just drowned it in bullets to kill the thing then and there.

In terms of constructive feedback, you have a solid thirty second period where the other characters stand around doing nothing while the Brute has its way with Romeo. I would recommend not dialing up the drama of a scene at the expense of pace/believability. In the original, this period is ten seconds long, which is already stretching believability when it comes to the reactions of the other characters, but it just about falls on the right side of the drama/pace balance. Looking forward to seeing your next work!

a couple slow-ish parts- but a perfect animation and a perfect anything in general is a large expectation. Regardless- bravo sir. This is the kind of treatment that I believe the story telling/general content in Halo needs. Something that knows what it is- plainly old as if it hadnt changed but with some acceptable upgrades
Im sorry but I have zero interest in the direction 343 pushes Halo especially its story. Didact- the Guardians- the harbinger- 343 just tried to speed run Halo out of Bungie's zone and into their own.
I used to try and be interested and it worked but until guys like you stop making stuff like this with zero budget while using 'old' content- Ill never believe that their way in the only way
I mean you guys on YT and elsewhere have been making these animations for so long now- sometimes theyre original yet connected to the *main* story and its characters. Hell some of yall dont even show the original content- just something new that happens somewhere around the originals- even though its your own take imo thats the best way. Because youre not just trying to redo youre actually adding onto it in a good way (if its done right like how you did)
When I want to watch this game cutscene Ill think of this video instead. Thats called *successfully* evolving something. 343 should take some notes.

I like the new dialogue, but the lack of music and the fact that it's been bloated to over twice as long as the original really doesn't do it many favors. The camera keeps changing angles way too often and overall it just takes too long. The pacing is all over the place. That said, the way you made the gravity hammer feel heavier was nice.

  • @AJadedLizard

Looks amazing, but far too slow. These guys are in a firefight, and their buddy just got smashed, they're not wasting any time in killing the threat, nor is the chieftain going to stop attacking until they're dead. Nobody should *not* be trying for a kill shot at any time. All the downtime breaks the tension. Otherwise looks beautiful, great work
