Love your videos LJ, please never stop! Unlike other RUclipsrs which mainly focus on locations and food with some commentary about their own personal experience, you go out of your way to make the locals and the people you meet the focus of your videos. To me it’s the human interaction which is the most interesting, anyone can film a beautiful beach but to go and try your best to let the locals show there life and tell their story, that is awesome. Greeting from Los Angeles!
G'day Julio, great to be reaching u over there in Los Angeles! Thank you for the kind words and appreciation. Have you ever traveled to SE Asia? Cheers mate✌
My wife is from Ho Chi Minh City. When I first visited her over there, I had the luck of her showing me how to eat everything properly, as well as what to stay away from. Vietnamese is definitely my favorite type of food, but I gotta give you credit for playing menu-roulette on that last meal. Braver man than me lol. I watch a lot of Vietnam-based YT videos, but I like your unique approach. Keep it up brother.
That smile can make friends any where! They appreciate you and that you are willing to treat them as important person. Heart warming to see people react to you and it really means something to them. It is much different than Thailand...genuine! Thanks for a great visit!
Your ability to explore and initiate interactions with people make you well suited for this. Not everyone is comfortable doing that. I really enjoy these videos. Thanks.
That’s how you gain respect from everyone in the neighborhood. Spending time with the older folks. Believe me- everyone else is watching you. Not many white guys in that part of town. That old gentleman may have never drank a beer with a young white guy ever before. You made his day . I think this is a so much better vlog about VN than all the other RUclipsrs lately. They all show the hotel. I don’t go to VN for the hotel. They show themselves at the tourist spots. Great - but that’s not the only part of VN . Carrot juice- chocolate coffee- drinking beer with complete strangers. Beautiful women, young and old. The beach at 6am and 6 pm. That’s the Vietnam I love.
I was there in May - June. I married a beautiful Vietnamese girl.I met her on my adventures in 2019. Prior to that- I lived in one of the biggest Vietnamese communities in the US. I received much advice from my American/ Vietnamese friends. As a white man in VN - you are being watched. As you stated- all eyes turn towards you in the hoods away from the tourist hotspots. We must act responsible- with grace, and with compassion. We can also go out and drink beer and meet the local women. Just be aware you are being evaluated by everyone. Haha. Does not hurt to always have a few extra dong in your pocket for the less fortunate. Ride that motorcycle safe bro.
I'm really enjoying your videos mate, specially this one. I watched it last night and when I was at work this morning I was thinking a lot about Vietnam, and I thought maybe I dream about Vietnam the night before, but it wasn't . At the time I just remembered that It was this video I watched. It made me feel as if I was there. And specially Da Nang, definitely my favourite city of Vietnam.
Hi LJ, really great to have you back loving Vietnam. As far as I can work out the game was Chinese chess or elephant chess, a a strategy board game for two players. It is one of the most popular board games in China and i is also a popular pastime in Vietnam, where it is known as cờ tướng, literally 'general chess'. The game represents a battle between two armies, with the primary object being to checkmate the enemy's general (king).
G'day Paul, thank you for sharing this info mate! I just did a little Google on elephant chess and it appears to be the one. Looks like fun, I should learn and find a teammate and go and battle them 😀
Love it mate. You have me rolling😂. All the quirky things you say when the locals have no idea. Im up in the North of Vietnam as we speak, I’ve been of the beaten track and the Vietnamese are honestly the nicest people I’ve come across. Having been in the 2 ‘poorest’ provinces of Điển Bien & Lai Chau, I never once got ripped off or hassled and the barber didn’t even want paying for my beard trim!! Unbelievable hospitality. You should check out the North mate, Ha Giang in particular. I’ll be there in a week or so 👍🏻
Lots of great interaction with the people , that's fun. The food looks good as well. They try and put on a good face for , and it's nice your appreciative of what they do for you. 🙏
Mate, give them a hug! They are absolutely loviing your presence and friendship. My wife just told me, 'Oh my God, that is so you, sitting with strange locals, eating their food and buying them beers'. We West Aussies are pure at heart mate. Do another tour with some locals and buy them some beers! Share some love mate.
Man I was just in da nang a couple weeks ago. My wife is vietnamese. Theres alot of fun we could get into. Maybe someday mate. I enjoy vids. Keep making em.
The burning of the special paper is a ritual from Ghost Month (happens in several South East Asian countries - they burn ghost money in Taiwan where I live). Ghost month occurs in the eight month of the lunar calendar, I think (which is always around late August, September). There are lots of superstitions related to the souls of the dead. In Taiwan, they offer lots of food to the ghosts, too - and even burn special credit cards and cars etc. You shouldn't go in the sea during Ghost Month!
Great Esquire , You give a personal touch to the stories , it tells the real story when you interact so much with the locals , and interesting to explore as you go , Great Video !!!
hi LJ great vid cob....getting the vibe and the warmth, that ole dude was priceless, go back and see him again...get a translator ... bet he knows some good jokes
I love the willingness of you going to these sort of places LJ 👍Speaking for myself I believe that's what makes trips like that so worthwhile! Some people are understandably reluctant but that's what makes for a adventure 😉 I'm 66 so I've had some experiences and know enough that some common sense and awareness is usually enough to keep you out of trouble. Being afraid of what you can't see or predict makes for a boring life. Life itself is a adventure 😉 don't let it pass you by
That was funny Esquire. Reminded me of the early Seinfeld episode where George is pitching their show to NBC as "The Show About Nothing" ... In the end it was about a never ending array of life's random events. Well done.
G'day from Texas. Was laughing so hard when the old timer asked you to follow him back to his place.....something that would totally happen to me. I love you getting into the non touristy areas and getting in with the locals.... darts and all. Indonesia was similar for me to Vietnam in that the locals were receptive towards me.....cant wait to get back to SE Asia. Cheers Esquire.
Was a place that the old fella's knew you being with them to share an experience it's life. The country will be thriving needing some advice from L J Esquire. Honest it will showed more you give more they take soon it will all change leaving them not the wiser.🍻
The parks in city centers usually have more English speakers especially students which learn to speak English from watching American movies. Banh mi is mostly found in street vendors as I had the same problem finding some there in several cities.
First time subscribing and commenting, that was a good video, so nice to sit with those old guys and give them money for a beer, I bet no one gives them the time of day like you did, the old guy looked like he was about to cry at one stage, giving you those photos said it all really. You were game going down that little alleyway. Those guys are pretty intense playing that chess game, i'm wondering if they were drinking alcohol or just tea or soft drink, they get pretty into it, would hate to imagine the argument would start if they were alcohol fuelled lol.
The ritual burning of “joss paper” is a part of the Vietnamese religion known as “ancestor worship”: the ritual offering of gifts for the sake of deceased relatives, to earn their blessings and to take care of them in the after-life.
Greetings from Miami. I enjoy your videos. Keep in mind you have an international audience. Had no idea what Bloke meant, had to look it up :). Keep up the good work.
Good to see you out of your comfort zone Squire. I'm sure you're enjoying Vietnam. When you see groups of Vietnamese dressed in white they are having a funeral. Respect🙏 Cheers👍
excellent and profound comment re operating outside of your comfort zone. good to see Esquire do this and he does this very well, so really not far out of his comfort zone
Gidday bruva Esquire. Love your vids , as I've said before bro , this one had a different feel.... Still , always love to watch . How you doin , you ok ?? Keep up da vids broz.

A typical Ozzie larrakin is LJ. Bushyboy Oz.
Bit worried for a moment you were gonna get bummed in that house. You're shining in these more off the cuff videos man, this was great
So nice of that man to take you into his house 🏠 then when you say bit of a ripe smell 👃 lol 😂 soooooooo funny Esquire 🤣🤣
Yes, I really like these random interactions with the locals. It makes for interesting and fun content. Well done LJ!!

Hey Mate, was in DaNang a few weeks ago….loved it…..Look forward to the posts….you give me a laugh
What an amazing interaction. Very wholesome.
It's the little things in a culture that are most interesting & turn out entertaining to watch rather than the obvious touristy things. Awesome.
Another great video LJ. You left a great impression on that man you had a beer with your kindness towards him.
Cheers mate, yeah i think I'll go back with somethin nice for him and maybe do a follow up vid in a coupla weeks 👍🏻

Lovely locals, so warm and welcoming. Esquire hoping on seeing some evening Korean action on the next episode! Got get em!
Excellent video! Hope to see more of these videos just experiencing life in Da Nang...
I think the burning of the paper is related to the ghost festival, very popular throughout Asia.
Excellent video with many wonderful people.
Looked like a calm, lazy afternoon: a throwback to another time instead of the hustle and bustle we think is so important today.
