  • Review how SSRI Antidepressants work including Mechanism of Action, Side Effects, as well as types of SSRIs.
    Study this SSRIs NCLEX High Yield Pharmacology mnemonic and other mnemonics with Pixorize.
    Serotonin-selective reuptake inhibitors, abbreviated as SSRIs, are antidepressant drugs used to treat both depression and anxiety. Drug names of the SSRIs to know include citalopram, escitalopram, sertraline, paroxetine, and fluoxetine. Common side effects include sexual dysfunction and weight gain. Another important adverse effect is serotonin syndrome, which is a medical emergency resulting from an overload of serotonin in the body, manifesting as hypertension, tachycardia, muscle rigidity, and diarrhea. The risk for Serotonin syndrome can be reduced by teaching the patient to avoid other serotonin-altering substances like MAOIs, St. John’s Wort, as well as avoiding any and all grapefruit products.

    Thanks alot for this amazing piece of work. However I want to point out sth.SSRIs may cause weight loss with short-term use, but taking them for 6 months or more can lead to an increase in weight. Some of them are used to treat bulimia. It would be better to show a moderete weight in terma of the scale in this video to cover both effects

    • @gwynthegnome2050
      @gwynthegnome2050 Год назад +7

      I think he put the scale under the fish specifically because, of all of the SSRIs, paroxetine has been shown to cause the most weight gain (more so than the others listed here). So it's still a very useful image to help you remember that when choosing one SSRI over another.

    Could being on a high dose of methadone cause an antidepressant to not ever start working somehow? Zoloft and Wellbutrin in particular..

    • @RobespierreThePoof
      @RobespierreThePoof Год назад

      That's a question for an MD, not a study video for nurses in training.
      I would guess that methadone is affecting your opioid receptors different from the dopamine, noropenephine and serotonin receptors. However, that doesnt mean there couldn't be a secondary interaction.
      But .. ask your doctor

      @davidmayo5876 Год назад

      @@RobespierreThePoof I agree with you. I honestly wasn't even aware it was an RN training video. I just searched for any videos pertaining to the subject, and was interested in hearing what some people's opinions were. My health insurance doesn't go into affect until January, or else I would find myself a doctor and ask them.
