I live in California and surf almost every day before school. The beach breaks make it so that there's always something and the reefs turn on as soon as it gets over 2ft.
Sometimes in the winter Portugal even has too much swell and too much wind, but there’s always a place to surf. In the Summer and around that there’s always lots of NW wind, specially in the evenings and sometimes fog in the morning. October/November/December are probably the best months and then January/February/March
Hey Dan! here in Chile the north swells can create a true barrel fest on the left-hand point breaks, but only the high energy north swells arrive. The south swells of the Pacific are really busy on summer too, so even if there are no north swells, it's very unlikely to find a flat day.
Hawaii obviously has its days, although there are a lot more things that have to line up than you might think. A lot of the time the offshore wind is too strong to get a good surf in, and the swell direction matters a lot depending on the spot. I’ve lived in both California and Oahu and in terms of just consistency I’d say California takes the crown
Grew up islands, West Honolulu, graduating from town to country, and anywhere else that had waves. West side is home. Stuck up mainland now, and will never acclimate to wetsuits, and no option of offshores.
Here in Portugal in winter sometimes gets too much you have to be on sheltered coasts as Lisbon or South Algarve. But still, nothing to complain, even in summer we have well overhead waves on the west coast, just mind the cold waters...
I lived on Oahu for 8 years. It definitely has what locals consider “flat spells” especially in the summer when those south swells get shadowed. Tourist will go out in any old junk to say they surfed Hawaii. But ther a plenty of times that no self-respecting local will go out. There are even periods on the North Shore during the winter, when locals stay home.
Your ideas for videos are really great. There are a lot of surf channels, but few of the hosts take the time to explain in detail what it's like to visit a place, and how to get the best out of a visit. Thanks Dan for putting in the time and dedication so that other people can become better surfers✌🤙
Yes, I can attest as a Peruvian. Central and southern Peru are extremely consistent, with very few flat days in the summer. Northern Peru gets slightly smaller surf from south swells in the winter and receives good north swells in the summer. Also, northern Peru is not just consistent, but also world class.
@@texassurfjournal Your best shot would be northern Peru: Lobitos (intermediate/advanced) picks up swell from many directions; Cabo Blanco (experts only) and Mancora (intermediate surfers) pick up north swell. Chicama is in north-central Peru. It requires big swells, so I don't recommend it in the summer. Pacasmayo is just 1 hour north of Chicama--it's very long, a bit bigger, and more consistent, so not a bad choice. The surf just south of Lima (south central Peru) is reasonably consistent in the summer because it picks up even small south swells and the occasional big north swell. In any case you would have to fly to Lima, so maybe you can refine your plans once you're there, based on the forecast.
Ya got west oz just a bit wrong. for alot of the year the tides and swell directions render most decent waves un-surfable and the rest are constantly swarmed by marauding packs of backpackers and fifo workers.
😅really surprised he left off Mexico. a place like Rio Nexpa gets NW swells in winter Southern Hemi’s in Spring, Summer & Fall. AND hurricane swells. A massive swell window. If there’s a ANY storm in the Pacific, this area gets waves.
So California is a grovelers paradise. Way overrated. We get good surf one month a year. The rest of the time it’s 2ft. Great video Dan. Keep it up! Love your videos.
You mention costa rica, but el salvador, nicaragua and panama are the same, not many world class waves but every single day of the year are wave. Actually el salvador is the most consistent surfing country in the world during all year around.
Thanks for all the videos!! Planning a surf trip for February. Thinking Sayulita, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Bocas del toro, or Puerto Escondido. Wanna surf as much as possible!! Anything over double over head I'll be watching from the beach. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks
Definitely up there!! I guess France gets stormy in winter and doesn't have the same reefs/corners as Portugal though.. Not sure what Morocco is like in summer?
Surfing is lame these days, most surfers these days started during covid to be culture vultures and post to instagram, bodyboarding way cooler now, jus tlike the 90s 😂😂
Too bad so much air travel is required to visit all these far flung locations, lots of CO2 emissions are a result, but what the F we don't care much for the future until it arrives with a vengence

Grew up with similar on the east coast of South Africa
But your surrounded by SEPPOS
FACTS! HB always has surf
Hey mate!! Sick... Yeah Cali would definitely be up there as well!
@@DanHarmon123 Thanks for the great vid!
Im seeing this living in Belgium, probably one of the most constantly flat place in the world
Getting into stand up paddle boarding
Hahha! How many days of the year can you surf there?
@@DanHarmon123almost never, we’re happy if the waves get over 1ft
I've been surfing around the world 50+ years, trust me bro Romania is flatter. I love it here but have a serious jones for some waves

West Java indo. Been there 25 or so times over the last 30 years and never had a day where it was too small to surf
Love your videos, man! Keep 'em coming, thanks!
South Island NZ! Can surf every day in Dunedin year round 🎉
🤟🏾 from the deep all the way round to the dirty the south is where it’s at😎🤟🏾

Ahhh interesting! I guess it creates an interesting angle on those points as opposed to the prevailing south swells!

Yeah wow! That's interesting actually, wouldn't have though that! Thanks for the info :)
At least on an island, one side is gonna be offshore, and you only need some swell. 😜🙏🤙
I had a friend who lived on Kauai who said that he always had waves of he was willing to drive.
A very well explanation......standing by for watch the show

wheres this western Australia you talk about?,
the wa i live in is a lake half the year 😅
As an added tip. For all the destinations he mentions avoid the name spots. Overpacked and not worth surfing due to human traffic.
I live in Chile for the last 22 years and NEVER seen it flat here.
Duranbah seems to be 3 foot, maybe 2 foot on a bad day, pretty much all year round.
Good stuff Dan!❤
7:47 how long is that paddle out, my god 🥲
Love your videos!
keep it up legend

Hi Dan, excellent review, please don't forget Peru, here is almost waves 370 days per year. big hug!

Goin to popoyo next month, cant wait!!
I got skunked so bad in Portugal during a month long stay in December. what are the odds.. left early. this was like maybe 5 years ago or so
Love Portugal but its often too big and wild...or just junk/cross shore...and very crowded with the whole of Europe
I did not know south shore oahu got waves. secret spot?
What about Peru ? Missed that one
Love Portugal. Going again in Nov
Hi, where did you stay in Nicaragua?
Dan head up north to "The Boom" and you will get some good barrels!

Just gonna go to Kaisers and Ala Mo bowls and call off all the bro's: "Comin' down!!" Kala welcomes ALL..... Is this Wave Hunters?
Is mexico consistent year round?
Costa rica pura vida❤
Lombok, Indonesia is paradise.

Rio de Janiero. Waves year around. Summer doesn't get as big but you can find waist to head high waves.

Santa Cruz gets flat pretty often. If we’re talking about NorCal I would say SF and ocean beach

Yep.. world of waves .. no one owns the ocean
Lol Indo is tiny and no where near 4th or 5th in the world
My mistake!! It's not tiny though... it's the 15th largest country in the world!
