- Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room's only window . The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back. The men talked for hours endless.
They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation.
Every afternoon when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window .
The man in the other bed began to live for those one hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of the world outside.
The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every color and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance.
As the man by the window described all this in exquisite detail, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine the picturesque scene.
One warm afternoon the man by the window described a parade passing by.
Although the other man couldn't hear the band - he could see it. In his mind's eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words.
Days and weeks passed.
One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep. She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away.
As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window . The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone.
Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the real world outside.
He strained to slowly turn to look out the window beside the bed.
It faced a blank wall ..!!
The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased roommate who had described such wonderful things outside this window .
The nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even see the wall.
She said, "Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you."
That man was a Angel and it was time for him to go home.
what home?
+Luffy Mugiwara Coffin.
***** ha.. nice one.
+TheUniqueGemini He died, he did not go home.
+The Space Pope Matthew Read carefully, she said that he was an angel, he died so he come back to heaven..clearly enough? :P
Damn onion cutting ninjas... It's amazing how a 4 minute short film could catch the feels..
I like to think that the man by the window was telling a story of his own proposal.
thus the "that's what he's afraid of" line. So, in a way, he's recalling his greatest life-changing moment and he enjoys sharing it with his blind roommate (as it gives a perfect opportunity to tell the story in colorful, descriptive way with no rush)
A one, heartwarming story with a good twist. Thanks for posting it.
Damn brick walls cutting Onions. ;A;
there is actually on onion garden instead of a park :'(
Great story, the nurses acting however... cringeworthy
thought the same, but yeah nurses in real life are bitchy to.
Great short film!! Really, really great. So simple and yet powerful and inspirational. It's amazing how this 4 minute movie caputured my emotions my than most 2 hour hollywood films. Major props to the writer, director, and actors of this movie
That moment when a mere four minutes and twenty one seconds can make you feel more emotions than a modern-day feature-length blockbuster.
I remember reading a version of this story a long time ago and this one is A LOT happier than the one I read. The one I read the guy that wasn't next to the window became jealous of the guy next to the window and killed him so he could move to the window, only to find out there was nothing to see but a brick wall. In that one you get the sense that the guy looking out of the window was just making stuff up, but in this one you get the sense that the guy was making up the stuff he 'saw' out of the window in an attempt to make the other guy feel better.
I remember reading that too as a kid. It still haunts me to this day.

I think it was in one of those 'Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark'
books en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scary_Stories
That's the old story. In the variant of story we tell our kids in Russia the end is really sad: fascists come and kill everyone, because nurse is Jewish and Nazi killed both invalids and communists (which they did in real life).
The moral of the story is: prepare for war, because someone will attacks us for sure.
yeah, I was so confused and I realised there's different versions
In the American version the man that was sitting by the window died of natural causes and the man that wanted to look out of the window wasn't blind it's just that he couldn't sit up straight. when he asked the nurse to switch his bed with the guy that just died He didn't realize that the man was blind until the nurse told him that he was. And the "window" was just a empty wall.
This video came as a passage in our exam...after the exam I came home and searched for a video related to this three months ago...but now I found it.
making someone happy is the biggest happiness in this world and not everyone carries the same attitude !!!
This was originally written by Allan Seager, and published as "The Street" in Vanity Fair in 1934. Henry Buschman didn't write it first.
So sweet & sad at the same time.
Plotwist: The old man didnt die and the blind one wasnt really blind. They are both actors and this was just a short clip.
Hell of a Twist
Shared grief is half the sorrow, but happiness when shared, is doubled. :)
"She said, "Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you."
NO SHE DIDN'T
the description… doesn't match up with the video lmao… -__-
+blupengu the description is the original story the video is based on :) cant remember the author tho
+Mikael Arp Frandsen ooh lol, they should've credited the original story :/ thanks for the info though :P
blupengu still. The description story is awesome
We leart this story in our english class when i was in 8th grade! I loved this story!
It is not the amount of time you devote to each other that can make a difference, but the quality! That's summed up in one word: LOVE!
Hope that feeling and its actions arising and contaminating the world! So be it!
I love this film... It has so much meaning to it. Makes me tear each time i watch it
I'm crying omg. That's my favorite park.
The film and description are different
when the nurse told him there's only brick wall outside of the window, i have had goose bumps

when the nurse told him there was a brick wall outside the window I just thought "KILLJOY!" but I still liked it.
Oh god I can't stop my tears this is soo touching,,,we should always make others happy while we can...
我看了覺得很感動
這影片因該是在告訴我們任何事情要往好方面想
即是瞎了 你也能過透過他人的傳達而感到喜悅
So we meet again 240p, long time no see.
BEAUTIFUL piece of friendship
I think the people in the world need to be nicer to eachother like these friends are
biggie, is that you?
The original story had the guy moved over to the window to see the brick wall for himself
Como se llama la canción ?
he did what he did to make the blind patient happy...
oh man it's awesome seeing a visualisation of this old story :']
Im not crying, my eyes r just sweating

Kind ness is a gift use it widely
A Blind Patient Asks The Nurse To Look Out The Window, Her Answer Is Simply Heartbreaking
idk why this came to my head but im glad it did :)
This made me cry like a baby
I remember reading this story when I was a kid. It was in my English textbook.
I love this story. Too bad it also happens to be something I need to analyse for my chinese homework. It kind of takes away the emotion, the power of this story when you need to analyse every single intention and describe their personalities.
😭 this touched my heart so hard😭
It's only four minutes, but it blew me away. That's how the world run.
it really gave me goose bumps !!!😢😢😢😢😢
Amazing
True friendship
I love this story.
the story is so nice if u will understand and realize what are friends are for ? and the promises for each other :)
I used the screenshot of your video in my blog about this Buschman's short story.
This is the first time i cry since my mom passed away 9 years ago 😥😥
Very nice
Wallhacks!
damn dat comment killed me
"BeiYin" What can we expect from a blind man? that's the best he can do to comfort his sick partner feeding him with positiveness. Undoubtedly he should be given credit for his thoughtful and unselfish attitude. For normal ppl we too have to imagine first what we want in life, from therein generate desire and actions to materialize it .
Awww this is AMAZING 😭😭😭❤️❤️❤️
Video length 😏
Nils Cassiers 4:21
I cited this info as a background in blog about this "The Man by the
window" in my blog to give due credit to the original author. Thanks!
Oh, the feels....
This is epic!!!
so sad 😔 I cried when the other guy next to the window didn't come back
It spilled tears
I don't get why this video differed so much from the original story.
This version is a lottt more pure than the one I read. The one I read the blind guy heard the man in the bed choking on fluid in his lungs. But after so long and all the jealousy he allowed him to die without calling for help. Just to find out this ending
omg it just touch my heart~~
I remember reading this story on FaceBook
Hit me in the feels ):
Hi, thanks for your effort in making this video! I read the story lately and found that this is in junior high textbook. It says that the article was written by an Australian author Tigert... probably not correct spelling. And the story is slightly different in that the man by the window died because the other man didn't call the nurse when he heard his partner coughed at night. He thought he could be moved to the window bed then. So does anyone know the correct version? Who wrote it? Thx:)
there's plenty to enjoy without having to see it.
the feels overflowing
For the first time NO horror movie 👏👏!! The nurse was uh nasty!! Thank you great great short film 🌹🌹🌹🌹
moral of the story: liars die
damn you
+Darren Voon omg too dark....TOO DARK
+Darren Voon hahhahaha
+Darren Voon you lack two things. First, you don't have the BRAIN without seeing the true moral lesson of the story. Second, if you think that the old guy is just lying to his blind friend, you don't have the HEART for not knowing what his purpose for doing that...
+Darren Voon hahahah xD
We got this video as a passege in 2017
Forget the video.. The description story is way more great
I dont know why.. but someone need to make a JOHN CENA!... SCENE FROME HERE
Our teacher showed us this video while taking class on this story.
I love this story. Beautiful!!...... I know the meaning has nothing to do with this,
but to make it more realistic, Nurse should be stripping the bed, not making it.
my heart just broke ! :( :(
I can't stop crying :( my tears r endlessly falling
plz can you write me the vedio
just I didn't understand what were they taking ?
I can't understand the speech
There is a country western ballad based on this called "the bed by the window." Several different people have recorded it. Once you have heard it, you won't forget.
My favourite story
What is the intrumental music being used in this video called? I love it.
مقطع جميل عن الحياة والتفال والأمل
Who else has been looking for this video?
Why are ninjas cutting onions in my apartment, of all places?
+Fabián Jacquin bcs they are killers not ninjas if they are they are from Deep web
Who else chopped onions while watching this?
Would've been nice if the nurse went along with the park story...
Who's cutting onions. :(
best park ever!
I didn't come here to feel!!! *cries* *cries*
Wow this story is in my English poem
Why did the maker never credited Harry Buschman? He actually wrote this story with the original title, "The Man by the Window".
i literally cried
that was nice
媽的!害我一直流淚~T_T
it would be more intresting if the nurse continue the chain , but anyways this one was great too ^_^ !!!
Wasn't this a story in one of the Scary Stories books? (I think the second one)
This is going to be a funny video!... aaaaand I'm crying.
New X-men trailer?
All aboard the feel train!!
Very nice video. It made me feel happy. But, what is the true message?
Nice short film! This video could have been used to encourage eye donation.
