My tour starts in the heart of Downtown Rotterdam. As I stroll through the bustling streets, you’ll see a mix of modern architecture and historical buildings that give Rotterdam its unique character. The energy of the city centre is palpable, with people going about their day, shopping, dining, and enjoying the urban scenery.
Next, I visit St. Lawrence Church (Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk). This historic church is the only remaining building from the medieval city of Rotterdam. It’s an impressive structure with a rich history, and its towering presence is a reminder of the city’s resilience and heritage.
Just a short walk from the church, I come to the Market Hall (Markthal). This modern architectural marvel is not just a market but also an apartment complex. Nearby, I visit De Boeg Monument. This striking memorial is dedicated to the Dutch merchant navy sailors who lost their lives during World War II. It’s a somber yet powerful reminder of the sacrifices made during the war.
My next stop is Central Station (Rotterdam Centraal). This major transportation hub is a masterpiece of modern design. Its sleek, angular lines and spacious interior make it one of the most beautiful train stations in Europe. It’s also a gateway to exploring more of the Netherlands.
Finally, I conclude my tour with a visit to Cor Kraat’s sculptures. These playful and colourful pieces of public art are scattered throughout the city, adding a touch of whimsy and creativity to the urban landscape. They’re a testament to Rotterdam’s vibrant art scene and its embrace of innovation.
