I am just thinking about starting rug making and I felt so intimidated by all the stuff I didn't know, I didn't even know the difference between rug hooking and punch needle so I didn't know where to start. I am so glad I found this video! You are so easy to listen to and you explained everything so clearly, it's so helpful to be told which tools are the basics and which ones you can forgo until you've decided if rug making is for you. I don't leave comments often but this video is brilliant and so are you! Thank you :)

I'm only halfway through the video so far but your love for this craft is infectious, and it's so refreshing to come across a beginner's guide that isn't either elitist or recommends prohibitively expensive materials to start. I like that you've spoken about all the different kinds of fabrics and needles and hoops you can use - half of which I've already got in the house!
I was fully expecting to have to fork out loads of money on a massive fancy frame and all sorts, but thanks to you I think all I'll actually need to buy are one or two appropriately-sized needles and I should be able to make an entire rug... From the comfort of my own sofa and everything!
Thank you so much for making this!! 😁

PS: Rug hooking is an ancient craft, they were doing a form of rug hooking in England and no doubt the rest of the UK 400 years ago. Apparently there was evidence of rug hooking in Egyptian tombs, so it is a good deal older than the early twentieth century.

I enjoyed this video. Wanted to say, I am 75 and remember my Gramel cutting strips of old wool clothing with ✂️ , sewing the strips together and winding them into balls. We lived on a dairy farm so she used the burlap feed bags as her backing fabric. This made the rugs the same size. The art has come a long way since then, with all the new tools, patterns, etc. Gramel made her own patters or I would draw a few for her. I still have two of them, with stains where puppies threw up on them! I don’t know what happened to her hook, as she lived in PA. and I was in CA. by the time she passed.

I am SO GLAD that you also included burlap as a possible backing. I am really enjoying rug hooking and, although I've used monks cloth, I have done most of wall hanging ( not to be used for rugs) on burlap. Using the less expensive backing allows me to hook more and experiment more. It's refreshing to (finally!) hear someone say burlap is a possible choice.

Several years ago I happened upon a little shop that had a portion of the store set up with rug hooking patterns and wool. I fell in love with them and bought a pattern and the wool. But for whatever reason, I didn’t buy a hook or frame. Anyway, I recently pulled out that still loved, still undone pattern and tried to figure out where to start. I didn’t have a clue what to buy! This video has been so helpful! Thank you for doing such a great job explaining the tools and where to start.

I found this by accident, realised when you started demonstrating that I had seen the principle somewhere. You make it so easy to understand, you give examples of both Rug Hooking and Punch Needling, the equipment, what to buy and what not to buy (at least until you decide if it's for you), the yarn (although to me it looked like fabric) and the method. You are so easy to watch, I really enjoyed this video, it's my first one but won't be my last. Thank you - loved it and you

Very informative video and helpful for beginners.
I use an Ultra Punch needle and I like it because it comes with 3 sizes of needle tips. 99.99% of the time, I use the medium tip. With that tip, I can use 6 strands of DMC, or a doubled thread of #8 Valdani perle cotton, which is my preference because as you said, the colors are beautiful! I have quite a "collection" of Valdani. I sell the Ultra Punch and weavers cloth in my Etsy shop, Privies & Prims.
I'm gonna watch your daughter dying wool next. Looking forward to it!

I wish I could add a picture, pulled out a burlap covered picture frame, stenciled a dragonfly on it and hooked some wool roving. wow.. I've been collecting tools for quite some time and two years ago I went to a sheep/wool gathering in Oregon and made a point to buy tools/supplies to try new things. So I bought some monks cloth and linen for rug hooking or rug punching. I've even dug out some old quilting books with big bold patterns. I'm in with both feet. Thanks so much.

So comprehensive and thorough. One thing I still don’t know is what kind of wool to use… woven or felt. It seems that felt would cut nicely but maybe be weak when pulling it through, whereas woven would be stronger but prone to shredding. I’ll Google it. I imagine it’ll be easy to the answer. Thanks!

Not felt. You could use it in small areas but it has no give and every loop will be trying to pull up. Try a little of everything. I've used garbage bags, helium balloons, candy wrappers.... but for the distance wovens that aren't too loose are best!

This was so informative and I really appreciate it! I've recently been seeing a little bit of this and I thought it was so interesting... a couple of other videos I've seen used rug guns with huge frames, and it looked very expensive! Glad to hear it doesn't have to be that way. I was just looking to maybe make some small coaster sized pieces and this would be perfect 🥰
