Congratulations on the growth of your channel. Tbh fougere's rarely wow me, with the exception of Elysium parfum cologne which was a love at first sniff, although I daren't try the parfum in case I like it because I can't justify that for a 50ml. As for Christmas food, for me its the good old Christmas pudding that I wait all year for and then try not to eat too much of(and normally fail). Marcelito! Always pleasure watching your videos, mom is visiting from Argentina and brought some Mantecol, my favorite Christmas treat, as far as panettone, the best I had was in Sicily at my uncle’s home
Wow you found melomakarono. They shouldn’t be dry a little bit on the outside yes but the middle should be soggy from the syrup. On top we put walnut but I like a little bit of bite to them, yours have walnut probably but no texture. They either have too little syrup or they are not fresh. I would give them a 4/10 based on looks. The idea behind this treat is to take a biscuit ( that’s why they are dry) that people usually dip in their coffee, and then soak it in syrup and honey sprinkled with pieces of walnuts. If you drizzle some of your own honey they would instantly become much better. Personally I think people love it because they associate it with Christmas. I can have a few of them when they are fresh but I am not crazy about them. Your room should have smelled like honey and walnut when you opened the box. I like a lot of orange in the syrup and they smell even better that way!
It was good to connect via DM today Thanos and yes, all the things that you checklisted here were definitely not the case with the one that I got! I think this one had been sitting there too long. Going to try again my friend as I need to make sure that the Greek community are properly represented!!! Now that I know what I'm looking for; the adventure begins! Great to hear from you mate👊🏽
I actually love Bracken Man but don't have it in my collection...this would have been the perfect example of another classic fougere (plus I wanted to talk about Amouge as a brand...next time!) Great to hear from you @akilojackson👊🏽
The opening of Fougere Royale is interesting. Not sure how long your bottle has been open Marcello, but I can see why neroli might spring to mind (I wasn't quite sure what to make of it at first, and that did occur to me). Having had my bottle open for a fair while now, the opening has become different. It has become less sharp and more differentiated. It's now easy to pick up on the bitter/peppery component coming from the geranium and the herbs, and the florals are quite present from the get go (as is the amber,, but just lightly). Add in the citrus, and I can see how that could add up to neroli. That said, the botte I have no longer brings that to mind. The opening is very textured. Always fun when something develops that way!
I love that you've encountered what I too enjoy from niche perfumery....the maturation that occurs after that initial spray and noting further evolution to the perfume. It's the best experience for me. Next time we head over to Oligarch would love to compare the 2. My bottle is only 5 months old. I bought it in Milan (had to) as I knew that one day I'll be talking about 'Fougere's'😎 Great to hear from you Ed👊🏽
I bought a whole box of Christmas goodies from Harrods: Christmas puddings saturated in liquor, gingerbread men, spiced salted caramel shortbread, and spiced honey. Plus a cookie tin from Fortnum & Mason! 😋🤤
hang on a second...I need to come over to enjoy the spoils!! Everyone of those things I would love! Any recommendations on what I should hunt down and try?
Excellent, excellent video! I am so happy that tobacco is my note and I love all things in the Nicotiana family. Interestingly enough, I know my note is not a style like Fougere, however, I learned something interesting 10 years ago. Tobacco, as mostly known, is mainly used as an accord. However Tobacco flower from specific strains can create absolutes for the plant. Ok, there is my ramble. Drink is still black coffee as it is 🌄. My gourd is loaded and ready to go at Noon. Finally, I wish there were a way we could all get together for mate "chats" maybe once a quarter. I know it would be a pain to scale globally, however, experiencing the many passionate people on here "in-person", would be incredible! Cheers to all! I need to go rub a turkey down in preparation of its oil bath. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉😊
The funny thing about this video - the guy I had the argument with genuinely thought a fragrance like Roja's "Apex" isn't a fougere. But then you come to this video and if you follow the definition by the word, even the fragrance in this video that I do not view as being fougeres qualify as being one. For example, I think of Elysium as a citrus-aromatic. I also think of Rock Rose as a barbershop fragrance as it is structured very much around that sage-lavender one-two which makes it smell like PDM's Percival. In the content space, fougere is basically used very reservedly for specific fragrances that are evident in their so-called "fougeredom". You have obvious ones like Apex, Danger, Sauvage Elixir; but when it comes to aromatic scents like an Elysium, like a Percival or a Rock Rose; very few people reach for the word as they're not that well-versed to have a complete definition always in-mind. That's why I also use it very reservedly and which is why I found it very puzzling for somebody that somebody would want to challenge me on arguably the safest fougere claim. Will finish the video in-full tomorrow, appreciate the weekly!
Say what you will @DivineFrag and @DrTorquemada about Elysium. If you don't agree with me, I have no problems with that. But you will need to take it up with Roja himself: rojadovehauteparfumerie.com/collections/fougere?_pos=1&_psq=fougere&_ss=e&_v=1.0 Like I said, I did my research😎

Honestly, I've learnt so much from you the past year about these amazing brands and perfumes. Thank you as always Marcelo. 🙋🏻♀️Stani
I’m glad that you love the “rambling, crazy river” that is Mate talk… I’ve discovered that it’s not for everybody😬 Appreciate the wonderful support Stani. It’s always great to read your comments💫
French Teacher is watching... And nodding at you pronunciation. Great episode, and congratulations on hitting 45k! I didn't even notice you passed the 40k benchmark!
Amazing videos! Im so glad to use your analysis. I arrived into London(from US) and staying at Covent Garden. At Covent Garden mall I stumbled on Miller Harris. I never heard of it. I put on Black Datura. Wow!!!!! It makes me feel so good wearing it. It is a very uplifting pleasant fresh scent. A guy trying it on at store was blown away and bought it. After 2 hours wearing, I walk into a Vodafone store. The young lady is so amazed at my scent and asked what it was. She said run to store and buy. Im planning to get it today. Feuilles de Tabac was sooooo good too! The tabacco leaf is fresh and overall this fresh cologne smells sooo good! At Miller Harris the frags were so full of natural scent and clearly depicted. I tried Violet Ida and the Iris note jumped out strong. Also I went into Guerlain and tried Cherry Oud. Very good soft cherry note with leather and rose. Tobacco Honey is amazing! The honey note is soft and tobacco is slight. I went into Harrods yesterday. Any frag you want me to try? They have so many niche there and a rep for each 1. Im also going to Selfridges and other stores
Congrats to you Mike! Sounds like you’re having an awesome time… how incredible is Miller Harris💫such a underrated brand with so many amazing fragrances If you end up buying black Datura it will always remind you of your time in London😎♥️ Enjoy Homie! Looking forward to hearing some more recommendations on discoveries that you find along the way
Loved the caracter that you played on the video from 2010 ahahahahaahha The australian accent was VERY pronunced Loved the knowledge to be honest this category its the one that i am not the best to talk about because i realllllyyy dont know anything about so its allways great to learn something new !!! A huge ass hug from Portugal Great video like always,mr.Director nocks it out of the park !❤
Always good to hear from you Rodrigo and I’m glad that you enjoyed this mate talk. I’ve been wanting to talk about Fougeres for awhile, and the conversation with Divine frag, and JT was the perfect opportunity💫 And yes, the character of Roger Vanderlord is one of my favorite alter ego😂 Big hug my brother👊🏽
Now that that Director Dadda has been revealed, that explains what happend when you tried to explaine Sarlight in the Xerjoff video, he took a little break.
I'm going to have to watch that....clearly according to "Director Ovidiu Pop" I didn't do a good job🤔 You'll be happy to know that I have included Starlight in the line up coming out on Sunday....I'll be curious to know if this one passes the test😉
If only I could afford Elysium parfum. Got a sniff at Selfridges in London and GOD DAMN!! One of the best scents I’ve ever got my nose on but sadly it’s too pricey for me..
Yes, it does have a pricey tag to it, but I really love it; for me it does radiate a certain 'strength/confidence' in it's scent profile...this is why it never goes out from my library😬 Great to hear from you Andrew, thanks for reaching out
I find that this fragrance isn't a 'room filler' but it does have a lot of strength. I'd be curious to know if next time you test (only 3-4 sprays) and see if after 5-6 hours those around you can detect your fragrance (ask them to qualify) I find for me that yes, others can detect it; I'll be curious to know how this goes for you. Awesome to hear from you @Arthur_Sleep💫
Recently bought elysium parfum aswell as alexandria 3 for 50% of both. Find the parfum cologne a little to sharp, but the parfum to be just amazing, can't wait for it to arrive
Marcelo, I see you’re doing better from your surgery and the bandage is completely off your hand now. I’ve owned Elysium for several years now and I never thought this fragrance was a fougere. I need to get more fougeres in my collection. Great video homie.
In doing the research, I made sure that whatever I called a Fougere I qualified it… (Because I knew that I would be held accountable😉) According to the master himself, Roja Dove he classifies Elysium as an aromatic Fougere (🎤💧)
Great video, Marcelo! Fougere my favorite category in parfumerie world. I can’t believe you’re not mentioning my favorite fougere and one of the best on the market … How this video can exist without Viking? Actually both of them? Fougere, Aromatic Fougere probably the best category in my opinion. What is next, Marcelo? Chypre?
Lol, Creed Viking is one that I consider to have Fougere facets, but not be an outright Fougere. To me, it's almost like a niche modern variation on the classic Bay Rum more than anything else.
Great to hear from you Dominika… I just watched the movie🤔 That was crazy! Got a mixture of typical PenHalligan‘s mixed in with Monty Python 😂 I do love the very unconventional approach by the Penhaligons brand♥️
I've been wearing/testing new fougeres this week. Prada Amber Intense and Nishane B-612 past 2 days, then Histoires de Parfums 1725 Casanova today. Still have samples of Sartorial and Roja Scandal Parfum Cologne to go. I've been wanting to try Fougere Royale but not readily available to sample 😢
@scentedbyjota I didn't know 8 & Bob Egypt was considered a fougere. I do enjoy that scent. I also habe gotten into a house from Egypt called Nilafar du Nil. They a have a fougere (I think), called Nilufer. Incredible gourmand, fougere - like scent. Nutty, bright lavender and a light woody dry down. I swear there is a fougere-like finish in the composition. They have a few beautiful scents. Egpyt is obviously dryer more spicy woody than Nilufer and though I do get a nutty note from Egypt, definitely not a gourmand in any way. I hope you have a great day! Cheers 🎉🎉🎉🎉😊
I actually reached out to my man Thanos and it seems that I didn't get a good one. He mentioned that it looked too dark (and like you saw on this Mate Talk, it had an unusual smell). Going to try again! Great to hear from you Athanasios👊🏽
Hi Marcello! How do you feel about ages in perfumes? I'm only fourteen but I have found that I really enjoy and appreciate perfumes. Especially unique and innovative niches.
I love wearing fougères! Can you think of any besides Mon Guerlain that are marketed to women? It makes no sense to me that these should be considered masculine. I wear them anyway ☺️ Another question, would Dusita’s Issara fit into this category?
Hola Marcelo I love your channel. We share the same passion for perfume. If possible I would love it if you can also recommend what would be the equivalent scent for women. I would be in heaven if you would share that in your channel. Mil gracias 🙏🏻😊🎅🏼
Hola Blanca! What an awesome comment to read and thank you for your support and yes! I'm planning to create a Chypre line up...this is the female companion to the more masculine Fougere. Next week! Thanks again for all your support💫
Hello Marcelo. JT here. Yes Im a dude. Thanks for the treatment on the fougere, my favorite family in perfumery. Ive thought about changing my handle to "The Fougere Police", such is my interest in the definition of "fougere", and what I consider to be a general pervasive indescriminant use of the classification. Maybe Im a natural born taxonomist who is hung up on classification as a science. And I know I must irritate the you know what out of some people when I get up all in their face about calling x, y or z a "fougere". But the word is bandied about today in such a way that basically negates its usefulness. If everything is a fougere, then nothing is a fougere. Im all in to bending but not breaking. I myself often describe fragrances as having "fougere-like facets" or as being "fougere-esq" or "fougere-like", or as complex composites like "Amber Fougere" or "somewhere between an Citrus Aromatic and a fougere". If people would just define what THEY mean by "fougere" when they call piss a fougere, I'd be OK with it. I'd probably chuckle and make a comment, but at least they establish some boundaries for classification. The genre of art called "Impressionism" has a prototype that establishes boundaries that define what makes it impressionistic art. Sometime in the 1880's, shortly after Houbigant Fougere Royale debuted, Claude Monet painted "Impression Sunrise", which ushered in Impressionism, and defined what it is and what it is not. You can see where Im going with this. Houbigant Fougere Royale did essentially the same thing for perfumery's family called the Fougere. I read somewhere, in a piece written to try to distinguish the smell of fougeres from chypre's, that perfumers generally consider a fougere as having a dominant lavender-coumarin accord. Today, most fougeres don't even have coumarin listed as a note, so I just consider any earthy, slightly-vegital, hay-like accord as serving the "coumarin" role. But Ive come to consider lavender as the ALMOST indespensible fougere note. Some frags in my "Fougere-like" category don't have lavender listed, but they still manage to smell as if they do. And many lavender-centric scents are not fougeres in my opinion. Pour un Homme de Caron among them. Yes there are sub-classifications and hybrids. And fougeres change over time. I have a "Barbershop" Fougere collection (Penhaligon Sartorial is in that collection). The way I interpret Barbershop Fougere as a sub-genre - and I emphasize thats Its MY opinion - is that the earthy/veg hay-like accord is subdued just a bit to allow a powdery/soapy accord to share the spotlight. So its sort of an earthy/veg/hay/soapy/powdery accord that assumes the "coumarin" part of that lavender-coumarin fougere-defining accord. The one fragrance you featured that I would irritatingly question the fougere bonafides on in Roja Elysium. I don't think there is much fougere to that one. I agree with another commenter here that Roja Danger is a closer relative to the Fougere than Elysium. Elysium's classification? I don't know, maybe closer to a complex Citrus Aromatic. I have the 2010 re-imagined (and I consider it reimagined rather than a reformulation of the 1800's OG) Houbigant Fougere Royale, created by Rodrigo Flores-Roux in collaboration with Roja Dove. Yes, it IS a fougere. Big time. And I use it as the reference for what I call a "modern classic fougere". I view its design this way: If Paul Parquet were alive and active in 2010 and he wanted to create the same scent he did in 1882, using modern materials, techniques and tastes, how would "what God would have a fern smell like if it had a smell" come out? Houbigant Fougere Royale 2010. Amuage Bracken Man is similar to Fougere Royale 2010, with a more photorealistic fern accord. Recently I wore Guerlain Jicky EDP, Mouchoir de Monsieur and even Chanel Boy, which I think are much more in the vein of that classic vintage Houbigant Fougere Royale scent profile.
Hello! This is a fantastic write-up. Do you have any recommendations for highly aromatic/green fougeres either on the cheaper vintage side, or (non-discontinued and) from niche houses? Many thanks in advance for your consideration.
Right, now I understand. Mazzolari is an incredible store and 100% legit. It's a Milano institution. The Granddady of niche perfumery in Milano (plus they also have their own line of perfume....hence this is what I thought you were asking me) I would be confident in buying anything from them; without a doubt. Hope that helps @dollabill6912...good luck!
I would say that nowadays pointing a fragrance as a fougere is a bit hard and misleading! This category has merged with other categories and facets to create the mixed categories or sub categories => citrus fougere, aromatic fougere, amber fougere and much more … Then a fragrance as Dior Eau Sauvage can be categorized as an aromatic or a citrus or even a fougere (cause it has the classic lavender,citrus/ green / vetiver and Oakmoss composition)
I'm totally with you on this Faouzi....and without stating it so clearly as you've commented here; that was my point at the end with Clive Christian V (Amber Fougere???) Like all things creative; it needs to breath, evolve and be re-birthed...that's what makes it exciting. The beauty that we're blessed with, is that within niche we have the flexibility to go for the classic but then bend all the rules and go for something unusual and new Thanks for jumping into the conversation homie; always good to hear from you
Yes exactly. But we are not against being more creative and mixing things up ✌️ I like the new orientations of the videos (more niche i think 😂). Keep up the good work 🔥
Good question! I don't currently own New York Intense (but very much rate it)....however I do own Fougere Royale and LOVE this one! This is the OG, so I had to buy this one first😎 Sorry that I couldn't be of any greater help with this @JJHills-ho3br
I have tested these when I was last in Milano… But I didn’t buy anything. I don’t have any in my collection. I need to give them another chance…. Good excuse to go back to Milano😬 What are your thoughts? Do you have any that you would recommend?

Danger PC and Scandal PC are more fougere than Elysium to me. Bracken Man from Amouage is an interesting one. You should check that out.
I agree. Danger in particular. But I don't consider Elysium to be very much a Fougere. Bracken Man is DEFINITELY a fougere.

Sleight of Fern by Masque Milano is one of my favs you need to try it if u havent
Oooh, going to have to check this out from Oligarch. Great recommendation Dan; the name alone seems to hit the fougere mark!
Watched in 3 sessions and you jumped from 45.5 to 46.2 ..🥳you deserve to be in 100 already. Love the all over the place Maté talk( that’s me lol) am learning so much as love the history, scent and added humour without a doubt. Slowly getting to understand and enjoy fugere . Thank you as always Marcelo. 🙋🏻♀️Stani
I’m glad that you love the “rambling, crazy river” that is Mate talk… I’ve discovered that it’s not for everybody😬
Appreciate the wonderful support Stani. It’s always great to read your comments💫
Yes thanks by the way love your channel one of my favorite
Thank you🙏🏽💫
French Teacher is watching... And nodding at you pronunciation.
Great episode, and congratulations on hitting 45k! I didn't even notice you passed the 40k benchmark!
Phew😮💨 promise that I’m trying! Keeping up with my Duolingo😬💫
Sounds like you’re having an awesome time… how incredible is Miller Harris💫such a underrated brand with so many amazing fragrances
If you end up buying black Datura it will always remind you of your time in London😎♥️
Enjoy Homie! Looking forward to hearing some more recommendations on discoveries that you find along the way
Loved the caracter that you played on the video from 2010 ahahahahaahha
The australian accent was VERY pronunced
Loved the knowledge to be honest this category its the one that i am not the best to talk about because i realllllyyy dont know anything about so its allways great to learn something new !!!
A huge ass hug from Portugal
Great video like always,mr.Director nocks it out of the park !❤
Always good to hear from you Rodrigo and I’m glad that you enjoyed this mate talk.
I’ve been wanting to talk about Fougeres for awhile, and the conversation with Divine frag, and JT was the perfect opportunity💫
And yes, the character of Roger Vanderlord is one of my favorite alter ego😂
Big hug my brother👊🏽
Now that that Director Dadda has been revealed, that explains what happend when you tried to explaine Sarlight in the Xerjoff video, he took a little break.
I'm going to have to watch that....clearly according to "Director Ovidiu Pop" I didn't do a good job🤔
You'll be happy to know that I have included Starlight in the line up coming out on Sunday....I'll be curious to know if this one passes the test😉
Great list. Try Nishane b-612 and ormonde jayne - montabaco. fantastic fougeres
If only I could afford Elysium parfum. Got a sniff at Selfridges in London and GOD DAMN!!
One of the best scents I’ve ever got my nose on but sadly it’s too pricey for me..
A lovely scent but didn't last on my skin so I sold my bottle on eBay after less than 5 sprays. Good choice if it rests on your skin though
Yes, it does have a pricey tag to it, but I really love it; for me it does radiate a certain 'strength/confidence' in it's scent profile...this is why it never goes out from my library😬
Great to hear from you Andrew, thanks for reaching out
I find that this fragrance isn't a 'room filler' but it does have a lot of strength. I'd be curious to know if next time you test (only 3-4 sprays) and see if after 5-6 hours those around you can detect your fragrance (ask them to qualify)
I find for me that yes, others can detect it; I'll be curious to know how this goes for you.
Yes, hand is recovering really really well, bandages off, and the scar is almost gone
In doing the research, I made sure that whatever I called a Fougere I qualified it… (Because I knew that I would be held accountable😉)
According to the master himself, Roja Dove he classifies Elysium as an aromatic Fougere (🎤💧)
Great video, Marcelo!
Fougere my favorite category in parfumerie world.
I can’t believe you’re not mentioning my favorite fougere and one of the best on the market …
How this video can exist without Viking? Actually both of them?
Fougere, Aromatic Fougere probably the best category in my opinion.
What is next, Marcelo? Chypre?
Lol, Creed Viking is one that I consider to have Fougere facets, but not be an outright Fougere. To me, it's almost like a niche modern variation on the classic Bay Rum more than anything else.
@@JT-rx1eo for me personally Viking Original more “ Fougere “ than Elysium.
@@vasylshyyka1820I agree.
Lmaoooo viking
@@daniell5740 not really understand the comment …
Sartorial film for Penhaligons is one of the best perfume advertisments in my opinion
Great to hear from you Dominika… I just watched the movie🤔
That was crazy!
Try invasion barbare, creed himalaya, danger by roja, scandal, tragedy of george penhaligon's,eight & bob egypt, i also been on a fougere binge 😅
@raucusretread ill have to check that house out and yea egypt is considered a fougere
Melomakarona are soooo good when baked right!
I live in the us and saw they had a fragrance I couldnt find anywhere else Bodicea carbon sapphire
Right, now I understand. Mazzolari is an incredible store and 100% legit. It's a Milano institution. The Granddady of niche perfumery in Milano (plus they also have their own line of perfume....hence this is what I thought you were asking me)
I would be confident in buying anything from them; without a doubt. Hope that helps @dollabill6912...good luck!
I would say that nowadays pointing a fragrance as a fougere is a bit hard and misleading! This category has merged with other categories and facets to create the mixed categories or sub categories => citrus fougere, aromatic fougere, amber fougere and much more …
Then a fragrance as Dior Eau Sauvage can be categorized as an aromatic or a citrus or even a fougere (cause it has the classic lavender,citrus/ green / vetiver and Oakmoss composition)
I'm totally with you on this Faouzi....and without stating it so clearly as you've commented here; that was my point at the end with Clive Christian V (Amber Fougere???)
Like all things creative; it needs to breath, evolve and be re-birthed...that's what makes it exciting.
The beauty that we're blessed with, is that within niche we have the flexibility to go for the classic but then bend all the rules and go for something unusual and new
Thanks for jumping into the conversation homie; always good to hear from you
Yes exactly. But we are not against being more creative and mixing things up ✌️
I like the new orientations of the videos (more niche i think 😂). Keep up the good work 🔥
@@Faouzi7 Mixing things up to keep it interesting for everyone 😬 Did you like the Truman inclusion at the end? Or lame?🤔
Yes absolutely, i like the idea of associating perfumes to characters and stories✍️
@faouziroumani6953 bravo💪🏽
Hello, between Houbigant-Fougere Royale and Nicolai-New York Intense which one is the better fragrance if you could buy only one?
Good question! I don't currently own New York Intense (but very much rate it)....however I do own Fougere Royale and LOVE this one! This is the OG, so I had to buy this one first😎
Sorry that I couldn't be of any greater help with this @JJHills-ho3br
@@TheNicheFragranceCollector Thanks for the fast response,i appreciate it.
Question
Do u have any experience with mazzolari Milan if so would u recommend
I have tested these when I was last in Milano… But I didn’t buy anything.
I don’t have any in my collection. I need to give them another chance…. Good excuse to go back to Milano😬
What are your thoughts? Do you have any that you would recommend?
Is his name really Thanos?
Yep, He Is Thanos💪🏽
