    Another great show ... in fact, my favorite thus far. Hard to believe, but just yesterday I deleted the Feisol/King Joy examples I sent you thinking Marcus wouldn't be using them! What a surprise to actually see them on the show. BTW, my Feisol is now a lamp stand!

    • @PhotographyOnline
      @PhotographyOnline  3 года назад +1

      Hi Marvin. I don't think the Feisol you had was that bad, but those were extreme conditions. It's just that the Kingjoy A86 is a beast. Thanks for watching and thanks for the photos.

    • @Gazzab6
      @Gazzab6 3 года назад +1

      @Marvin Moriarty What model of Feisol did you have? I have the Feisol CT-3442 Tournament and have never had a problem with it. I live near the windy west coast of England and have done quite a few long exposures. It wasn't down to your ball Head was it?

    • @PhotographyOnline

      @@Gazzab6 it was definitely the tripod Gary, as Marvin used his ball head in the Kingjoy. The Feisol legs were simply too flimsy.

      @@PhotographyOnline Just because of this video I bought a Kingjoy K528. The A-Series is not available here in Germany and they cannot import it at the moment. Just for comparison the lower leg diameters: A86: 26mm, A85: 26,6mm, K528: 28mm. The upper diameters are also wider at the K528 at 39mm. The weight of the K528 is 2,18KG. I was in touch with the German distributor and after I was reassured that the K528 for 400 Euros has the same level of biuld quality as the A-Series (more differentiators were not provided) I ordered the K528. I was told that Kingjoy even thinks about merging the naming of different series. The first look and touch was very good. Solid materials, solid joints and a good height. After setting the tripod up to maximum height of 156cm I wanted to compare it to my other tripods.
      And there it was: a really big disappointment. Even at the lightest touch of a leg the whole tripod is wobbling heavily. You can even see it with your eyes and the resulting images are horrible. Nowhere near as stable as I expected. I made several shots with three tripods (Gitzo 5543LS, Gitzo 3540LS and Kingjoy K528) and the Kingjoy delivers the worst results. It might be that my "test-scenario" was not suitable but if you can see the whole thing wobbling after a slight push with your fingertip I do not have much trust in the camera support.
      I used the same head (Markins Q20i with BV-24) on all tripods and the same camera lens combination (Nikon Z7 with 1.8/85mm at F10 and 1/5th of a second, ISO100). The whole scenario was lit with a LEDGO 2880 LED Panel at 90% power and 5000K color temperature. I made one picture without touching the tripod and using a 1 second shutter delay. After that I made several shots with giving the tripod a touch with my fingertip from light to middle. The Gitzo 5543LS shows itself totally unimpressed whereas the Gitzo 3540LS started to show blurry images with the harder pushes - the lighter ones were acceptable. None of the Kingjoy images were usable.
      Maybe the A-series is better but my disappointment with Kingjoy is hughe. I will give them a call on Monday and probably will send the tripod back. If I was able I would post some pictures for comparison here. I will send you some via e-mail if you are interested.

    • @PhotographyOnline
      @PhotographyOnline  2 года назад +1

      @@LightTheShadows Hi Peter. It would seem as though the German distributor wasn’t telling you the truth. Kingjoy have no intention of merging any models. The Aurora series was their only pro- spec range until the recent Solid Rock series was released. This will eventually phase out the Aurora series but not for a while. The K series is really nothing special - it is basically their OEM tripod which they mass produce for other brands. I wish you had asked me before buying the tripod. Marcus

    Fantastic show!! I love your shows and always look forward to them. I learn something new with each and every show and always have my pen and notebook ready to take notes. This show taught me more about tripods than I ever knew and there is almost a full page of notes to show for it. When Marcus walked into the camera shop dressed as Harry I nearly fell out of my chair laughing. I had to stop the video to wipe my face because I was laughing so hard I was crying. I loved the detail you went into in the kit comparisons and watching Harry "get a lift" from Marcus with that tall tripod. Watching the amount of help Nick was giving his client shows just how much you can learn from another photographer no matter how long you've been shooting. Your show is so entertaining as well as informative and I can hardly wait for the next one. By the way, I was one of the lucky (and very happy) Spudz lens cloth winners. I'm still using the same Gitzo tripods that I've had for about 20 years. My main tripod is the G1325 which was the standard back in the day. I also have a G1548 which I used with a gimbal and 600mm lens. The gimbal and lens are long gone, but the tripod still does studio work. Never a minute of trouble from either tripod. I would agree, buy the best you can afford. Trade up if you need to. You won't regret it and a quality tripod will last a lifetime. The same applies to tripod heads. When I first started doing photography I had a Slik pistol grip head which I liked very much. These days I prefer Really Right Stuff heads. Nice to have professional looking photography shows on every month. Well done.

    I know 'good' tripods assist making considered compositions. But even the 'flimsy' sort can be useful; I inherited a RoTu brass ca1939 multi-telescoping tripod that easily slides (at 19cm, in its flat leather pouch) into a trousers pocket (or sporran..). With a small ball head it benefits from some steadying but the help in removing slight movements makes a very useful difference to image sharpness. It can reach about 5 feet tall (to mix units) and its retracted length is much less than most travel monopods.
    Great show again.

      Hi Victor. Thanks for taking the time to comment. We weren't contradictory, as we were using the centre columns to compare the maximum height of the tripods. In the tripod feature we said to only use a centre column when it is absolutely necessary. This means that you should only use it when you can't extend the legs any further. Obviously when we were testing the maximum height of each tripod, we needed to extend the centre columns. Hope that makes sense. All the best.

    Thank you for demonstrating superior habits with tripods. I laugh every time I see a video in which someone sets up a pod by handling each leg separately and then putting a Linhof on the pod. More than that, they position the pod with one leg directly behind the camera increasing the chance of kicking the leg by accident. Whoops! I hate it when that happens! Finally, much can be learned by simply watching high-end movie crews at work with their gear--lighting gear included.

    • @PhotographyOnline

      The best way by far to add stability to a tripod is to use spiked feet. However, these are only useful on soft ground. If you need to add stability (such as to stop it blowing over in high winds) when you’re on hard ground or rock, you can still use a bag hung under the tripod but make sure the bag is in contact with the ground so it is not swinging around, as this causes more movement than not hanging a bag under at all. Hope that helps.

    I switch to a lighter tripod and I've had no issues with keeping it stable. It has those spots on the bottom which I can push into the ground and it is much lighter to carry and encourages me to use it more. It's the Ulanzi ..... And it is very easy to use and it has accra swiss plate top on it. The great thing about this particular tripod is I can set up for a shot, and instead of having to pack it down and take the camera off every time I move. I simply pick up the tripod with the camera attached to it and move to the next location, because it's so light, it almost becomes a holding stick for the camera wants to legs are pushed up the problem with big cumbersome tripods like the one in the video is they are heavy and big to carry and when she set up you don't want to move it for a different shot so if you have a soda photographer that goes out to take one photo yeah great I'm so the guy that goes out and takes 50 to 80 photos in a shoot... I also do not use twist ones as well because they are no good once I get a bit agree more dirt inside them and trust me at some stage they will. They are a pain in the arse to clean and you have to spend about an hour cleaning it when you get home clips other way to go there much faster and they are much better in the salt water as well. I take a lot of seascapes where I'm literally either standing in the water or water splashing up at the bottom of my tripod and that's why I go for clips I would never ever ever recommend. Anyone use a tripod that has Charis they are a pain in the butt the butt. And yes, I'm a professional photographer I just don't have a fancy RUclips channel because I'd rather be at taking photos

      @@PhotographyOnline hi, i have a Manfrotto Tripod when i place the camera on the tripod there is some movement with the camera no matter how much i tighten all of the adjustment there is movement. the centre column is good but not the head of the unit. does this help?

    • @PhotographyOnline
      @PhotographyOnline  3 года назад

      It’s not really possible to suggest what can be done without seeing it, but there shouldn’t be any movement whatsoever in any part of a tripod once it is tightened up. If it’s new then I would suggest taking it back to where you got it and setting if they can help. If not new, then maybe just buy a newer or better head. Sorry I can’t be of more help but it’s difficult without seeing the exact problem.

    When I first saw the Manfrotto pistol grip tripod head many years ago I thought it was a brilliant idea and immediately bought one. However on using it I found every time you released the grip, no matter how gentle, it always moved very slightly upon final release. I thought there was something wrong with mine so sent it back to Manfrotto who replaced it. Unfortunately the replacement did exactly same. I later found out others experienced the same problem, so mine ended up on ebay.

      Hi John. I know exactly what you mean, but if you set it up with the correct tension then it shouldn't have this problem. I have many of them and none of them have any movement, but there is a knack to using them. As I said in the feature - they are not for everyone, but I find them the easiest to use head by far. It's each to their own though. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment. Much appreciated. All the best.

      @@PhotographyOnline I went through all the settings with manfrotto at the time and nothing worked. This was quite some time ago and I'm presuming Manfrotto have tweaked their design since then. However, I moved on to an Acratech head which has provided stella performance for many years and has an arca-swiss plate which I much prefer. Great show again by the way.

    Great video!
    Talking about the different budgets for gear, and specifically the birds in flight; if you are not used to shooting this kind of photography it is challenging, regardless of kit. I don't know what the other two shoot primarily, but the wildlife photog with the 5k kit would probably do very well with the 500 pnd kit. That kind of photography is learned. You could give the greatest landscape photog in the world all the kit he wants; his shots would be mostly rubbish the first few times he went out. MHO.

    Didn't know about King joy tripods so checked shop for info. Confused as to the video "do not put the camera bag on the hook" and the "There is a hook on the base of the centre plate for attaching ballast to improve stability in windy conditions" in the video.......Help!!!!

    • @PhotographyOnline
      @PhotographyOnline  3 года назад

      Hi Jim. You can use the hook to attach a bungee and trap the other end under your foot. So the hook can be used to add balast, but not if tthe balast is swinging around in the wind. Hope that makes sense.

    The rule of diminishing returns. If you want a little better, you need to spend much more. Big difference between $500 and $1,500. small difference between $1,500 and $5,000.

    Kingjoy's larger section leg diameter is 39mm and smallest section diameter may be around 27mm where as Feisol Tournament tripod largest diameter itself is 28mm, bottom leg diameters for CT-3342 and CT-3442 are 22mm and 18mm respectively. CT-3372 has 37mm and 25mm as largest and smallest respectively which I feel close spec to Kingjoy. I feel comparison should be between tripods with largest diameter above 34mm... Since "Larger the Diameter, Higher the Torsional Rigidity", for this kind of extreme conditions obviously you need bigger diameter legs.....

    One takeaway for me from the camera gear comparison is that money doesn't make you better, indeed if you use it well, then cheaper gear will deliver satisfactory shots. However, if you know your sh£t and/or crop a lot/print beyond A3, then you can benefit from higher performing systems. BTW, did Jeremy Corbyn get the workshop for free??

    • @PhotographyOnline
      @PhotographyOnline  3 года назад

      Hi Paul. The spikes I have are custom made by Kingjoy but I got them to make loads for me, so I have plenty of stock. They make standard 4cm ones which I also have, but the custom ones I got them to make are 5.5cm as I felt the standard ones weren't sufficient for heavy duty support. The tripod I use is a Kingjoy A86 but they are very difficult to find in Europe. I think I probably have the only stock currently available in the UK. Let me know if you need more info. Thanks. Right.....so you say that it is 3 times the work to UNscrew the tripods locking system one way, citing it is taking longer, yet that is the REAQUIRED way to tighten them so you hand is already touching them.
    You are reaching or are super fragile mate.

    • @PhotographyOnline

      You seem to be misunderstanding. If you are having trouble grasping the concept then time yourself doing each leg one section at a time, then time yourself doing all sections together (when they are together) and you will hopefully see the time is cut in half.

    I hate backgrounds that are so blurry that a viewer have no idea what it is. Might as well use a backdrop in a studio! Every must be seen in context of the surroundings and the craze for "dreamy" blurry background has gone too far, IMHO

      Each to their own T, but the point is that if you have a fast prime then at least you have the option, whereas if you only have a f/5.6 kit lens, you don't. Photography is subjective, which is why we all love it. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment.

    I hate my tripod and am going to give it to some poor fool. I have a mono-pod with 3 long sturdy feet. I will not go back. I have never had a case of needing rigidity to do a 60 second exposure. Level a mono-pod up and save yourself the trouble.

    • @PhotographyOnline
      @PhotographyOnline  3 года назад

      Monopods are all very well for supporting a long lens but they are certainly not a replacement for a tripod. You don’t say why you hate your tripod but either you probably have a poor one or you make the use of it too complicated.
