  • Many remember Keiko, star of the movie “Free Willy,” and his journey in the late ‘90s to Oregon and then home to Iceland. During that whole saga, KGW reported on Keiko - his arrival in Newport and then his departure - many times.

Crossing my fingers for Tokitae. Keiko never adapted for wild conditions and suffered for it.

Как Кейко любил народ и так со переживал за него и за его здоровье. Кейко это заслужил, наш добрый малыш.

Most sources conclude that the project to free Keiko was a failure because the orca failed to adapt to life in the wild. In Norway, Keiko had little contact with other orcas and was not fishing; for months before his death, the whale was being fed daily.

Yeah :( Too bad they didn't just keep him in Newport. I remember when they released him and I started seeing stories of him approaching people. I knew he'd never adapt properly.

Yup. Releasing these animals into the wild does not work.

Keiko died in Taknes Bay, Skålvikfjord, Norway, while swimming in the fjords on 12 December 2003, at the age of 27. Pneumonia was determined as his probable cause of death.

Unfortunately, releasing these animals always fails. They are habituated to captivity.
