As an Aircadet having gone to summer camp at Bagotville, O remember the noise of Voodoos taking off with full afterburner in the middle of the night which was very.impressive. In 1979, I towed gliders for the air cadets at St.Honore, which was 16 km from Bagotville and we had visits periodically from CF-18s. We also getting a ride in a helicopter up the Shipshaw river as far as the dam near Alcoa.

When the Conservatives cancelled the Avro Arrow after being convinced that Bomarc missiles were what the American government at the time suggested to be cheaper and more efficient. Canada bought quite a few and then realized that a missile couldn't tell if an intruder was a bomber or an errant airliner and thus couldn't be recalled. There was a panic and a few aircraft were considered like the F4 Phantom but the Americans were involved in the Vietnam conflict and needed the F4 so the Voodoo was sold to the Canadian government. The F104 Starfighter was used as it was fast as an interceptor but was only single engined and limited in range. The Voodoo carried two crew and with two engines was more acceptable. I remember talking to a Voodoo pilot and was told that with full afterburner, the aircrafts duration was limited to mere minutes and not miles. Quite a few times they had to land at other bases to refuel in order to return back to base. When Canada retired the Voodoo for the F18 it was thought that the multirole capability of this aircraft could replace a variety of aging aircraft in the Canadian military.
@@romankowalczuk1762 Interceptor, primary mission was to carry AIM-2 Genie nuclear armed anti air missiles to take out soviet bomber formations over the arctic. yes you read that correctly, for a short time in history, Canada was *technically* nuclear armed.

Only fair Canada gets to see the RAF Typhoon after the UK got to see the CF18. Canadian C-130s are quite common in UK skies.

The Snowbirds flew over Base Petawawa last week and put on a show for us. Nice to see them again, especially with all the cuts to the Armed Forces.
