For fellow comics/fantasy lit triviaphiles: The once-great, adult comics magazine, Heavy Metal, had a story entitled, I believe, "More Than Human", it was based upon the Roanoke Colony mystery, and featured the word "crotoan", or perhaps, it was spelled "croatoan".
I believe i read a horror comics adaptation of this story when i was a kid. What a treat! I think it was EC if i’m not mistaken. It’s been many years though, anyone else know a version of this from the 50s or 60s?

I have a theory. The Croatan aliens eventually manifested themselves as human replicas using the bodies of the missing Roanoke settlers as well as some members of the Croatoan tribe, and now live on Earth in their own established country. That country is, of course... Croatia. Sorry, just babbling mindlessly...

Harlan Ellison has a short story called "Croatoan." It doesn't have anything to do with Roanoke, but it is really good. Very creepy, as are many of his stories.
Ferguson is a fascinating writer. I can find only 5or6 stories penned by him but Croatan is so much better than the others and so absolutely different in style…..it’s like it was written by Lovecraft, Bloch,Wandrei and Kuttner as a joint effort …..a remarkable piece indeed.

Hey, wondering if someone could help me out? There was a story that I thought was either on this channel or MutedVocal's quite some time ago now.... One that I really enjoyed, but can't for the life of me remember the name or author. But I remember what it was about. Two boys (cousins I believe) walked to a graveyard and saw a corpse candle or flame that floated into the church (maybe crypt? it's been years since I heard the story so I can't recall ) , and one of the boys followed it inside .... Long story short a week later or so the boy died, but before passing away he told his cousin while on his death bed that he saw his face in the ghost flame when he followed it inside and he knew he would soon be dead after seeing it. Does anyone by any chance remember that and the name of the story so I can find it? I've searched literally everywhere I can think of for months now. Thanks 😀

I always thought it was "croatoan", and that it was carved into the island colony's palisades.
