As an Indigenous Veteran, I served this Nation for all cultures/religions that inhabit this land under the Australian National Flag. I also pay respects to my family, my culture/heritage/ancestors & my dreaming when it was appropriate/allowed in front of my former colleagues.
The actions of Adam Bandt are not called for and he should be removed for blatant treasonous acts.
That is similar for Lidia Thorpe. I do not recognise you as a Leader of the Indigenous people, I do not see you as a Leader for my people from Northern NSW.
The both of you and the Greens Party are doing nothing but the division between Indigenous & Non-Indigenous people.

In the 1980’s in Australia, we used to learn about the Aboriginal culture, go to shows with singing and dancing, get taught to paint with black Aboriginal people and listen to dream time stories. We absolutely loved this and I felt like it was apart of me as well. Just like the buttsman said and I really mean that. Now we are so polarised and divided and my Kids have no such opportunities because of people like Adam Bandt and Lidia Thorpe. It’s a sad state of affairs when I’m telling my kids about Dream time stories and they have no clue. I want to go back to the 80’s - 90’s asap.

I know a few of the "stolen generation" and talking to them they were pretty happy about it, they point to the people still living in bush camps, then say they are happy to have been integrated into society and given the same opportunity to work and live with everyone else. Then I talk to people that were taken into state care as kids at the same time and they sound like they were treated worse. Not that it was a competition but most of the stolen generation seemed to fair better than others taken away from their parents.
Then you get to look at the 'genocide" that supposedly happened, and find out it was police chasing bands of criminals that attacked outback settlements, often cattle stations and other farms. The left keep trying to rewrite history and wash away the attacks on the settlers and just concentrate on the chasing down of the murderers. Most of the history taught is through a weird lens of being the oppressor because of being white.

Check out a group called Hope not Hate - good name but they ruin people's lives and make them lose their jobs if their politics doesn't align

As a kid in the 90's I learned tons about Native Australian culture and history. Anti-Racists (or just racists) are a big part of the problem. These racists think that people who respect, admire and emulate a foreign culture are stealing it.
You can't steal a culture, it's not a possession. You can adopt it or reject it. Real racists don't want to emulate or adopt a foreign culture they hate. Can you imagine the mental gymnastics required to convince yourself that someone who has a great appreciation and respect for a foreign culture is actually a racist who hates them?
Also anyone who identifies people around them as a "whatever colour" person as if that's their defining characteristic, is not anti-racist, they're just regular old racist. To them, skin colour defines YOU.

The thing that many inner city young folk don't understand. Is that when you vote Greens, you are voting against your own country. The Greens mindset is all about appealing to raw emotion, minus the critical thought for potential policy consequences. It is a party which places "feelings" above all else. That includes the wellbeing of your fellow countrymen. Human suffering is, in the mind of a Green voter, a fair tradeoff for enacting policy which they feel will help "save the planet".

Despite being American, I love the Aussie flag. The Union Jack shows where the Aussies came from, people from England who went there to start a new life at the Southern Cross looks down on that beautiful land. It’s symbolic like how the US flag has 13 stripes for the 13 colonies we started as, and as new states were added we’d occasionally had new stars to the blue square, now we got the 50 stars of the modern flag. But that’s the point. The most amazing flags like Australia and the US tell a story with their design. Makes them more special and you want to be more patriotic when you learn the symbolism.

The Australian flag has an interesting history. 1. It was an adaptation of the New Zealand flag which was a proposed flag for NZed while NSW was the governing body of New Zealand. We federated first so we appropriated their flag. 2. The union jack in the NZed flag was symbolic of the NZ - UK treaty. It had nothing to do with Australian circumstances at the time. 3. The First Nation has never been what its name implies! It has always been a continent of separate and sometimes waring peoples that were impartial to one another and, due to a lack of sophisticated culture and unity were "invaded" by a technically superior cohort of nations who sought wealth and victory. None of which history can call unique. (Sorry First Nation Survivours)... Adam Bandt sought media focus for an entirely different purpose. He has slurred not only the cultural evolution of a flag and its nation, but he has avatared the First Nation and Torres Strait Islander flags and culture as supporters of his terrorist plight. Bant is an egotistic shill attempting to purport himself as a do-gooder and avenger for fantasy ideologies including his climate change magic powers. He must have been raised on the mantra "If you build it they will come". What he has done here is build decent and controversy in order to give him a status he doesn't deserve. #uckU2themoon Bant.

The country as a whole is technically only responsible for the past century of misdoings, while history shouldn’t be erased or ignored that cuts both ways, yes horrible things have been done, does that mean you can be a child and refuse to stand with the flag of the country that gave that man a job and any semblance of importance?
    I’d assume not

The various separate states were self ruling from the mid 1800s before federation. Not under direct foreign control. London urged restraint but the individual colonists on the ground preferred to take land and kill aboriginals. The first act on federation in 1901 was the immigration restriction policy, the introduction of the white Australia policy.

I think there's a fair case for changing the flag and I'm fully in support of the republic. However, the Liberals do have a point by only displaying one flag: one flag represents one people, and a single nation. To display multiple flags representing different ethnic groups implies that they are not represented by the national flag and not accepted as Australians, even though they're citizens. "Segregating our flags" is what it seems like to me - 'one flag for whites and others, two others for indigenous' is dividing based on race. If we want to change it, let's change it to better represent something that unites us, like democracy, freedom from oppression, mateship, the southern cross or nature.

Yes, our history has some very bad things in it. But what country does not? But the new vogue of hating one’s flag, and by extension, one’s country because of past deeds is ridiculous. It states that a) they do not see ANY change or good or difference between now and then. This is not only insulting to the ppl who live today, but totally diminishes and dismisses all the hard work done by those in the past to make things better. Plus, you could see it as racist, because after all, many indigenous Australians fought hard to get the changes made( and homophobic and what have you), but these ppl seem to think that those ppl and their works are just not good enough to acknowledge.
And b) that they must have it so well, or, by extension, the country must be doing things better, that the only complaint they can point to is past deeds done by ppl now dead. Like someone from an upper-middle class family still crying about how their great grandfather was so poor that they had to go to bed hungry most nights, so you don’t know how it is to be poor, unlike them.
Oh, and c) they really don’t have any interest in making things better, because no matter what changes happen, there is always the unchangeable past to point at and say ‘see, that proves that today is just as bad… no, worse.’

When people bring up the past, it can either hurt or heal, most of all we need to mend the past by is not acknowledging it, but by moving forward in acceptance and involve more Aboriginal and Torre strait islander culture, like the Maori in NZ, having more school programs teach and benefit the education of this culture within its respected mobs, more than just white Australians and then some.

It's been a while since I looked into this, so I might be misremembering, but I remember hearing something about how the Australian constitution is heavily based around being a part of the commonwealth and having the Queen be involved in Australian politics, and so by becoming a republic, we would basically have to re-write the constitution. Re-writing the constitution is pretty much every wannabe totalitarian politician's wet-dream, and could seriously jeopardise the rights and liberties of the average Australian. That's why the whole becoming a republic thing is so controversial - it isn't guaranteed to make everything go to shit, but it creates a political environment where that could easily happen. Amidst all of this ‘anti-this’ and ‘anti-that’, I have never been able to understand why there would be such a push towards making people either ‘like’ something or be indifferent to it; it seems to me that disliking certain things (or liking their opposites) is simply not ‘allowed’, which is simply a ridiculous notion; we are all free to like or dislike something (or someone). We cannot be bullied into liking something we dislike, or viceversa. Perhaps we are ‘wrong’ in liking something in particular, but that’s the sort of thing that would normally be dealt with through intelligent conversation. One needs to be convinced of one’s error through intelligent conversation, not forceful submission to the mad impositions of a moronic mob.
If, for example, a person ‘likes’ racism, that’s ok; perhaps they have valid reasons to do so, and we should definitely be interested in learning about those reasons and work our way through them with intelligence and sound arguments. We cannot simply discard the entire person just because they are saying something that sounds bad to our ears.

I know you stated you felt the union flag as redundant on the Aussie flag as it’s a statement of ‘past colonialism’ but I do feel slightly differently about it. To me it feels more like a friendly bond between 2 countries! I run a company and 2 of my main employees are Australian and I have worked with numerous Australian’s in the past and to me they feel like friends/family from another country and I have always thought highly of any Aussie I’ve met.
It might be sad to say but I see it like countries that incorporate the union flag into part of their flag as a sort of ‘friendship band’ and just feel like if it were to be removed it’s like an old friend ripping up that band.

NZ also had a flag debate thing. We were going to change our flag to the maori flag or maybe even a flag with a kiwi with laser beams shooting out of its eyes. So every New Zealander was mailed out a vote and we voted to stay with the same flag, though now we have the NZ flag, the Maori flag, a few other flags. Surely multiple flags could represent NZ.
We also have the Greens here though they are called Greenpeace, Their solution to climate change is electric vehicles, the problem New Zealand's power grid, the few hydro power plants and wind power we have is already taxed, then its hyper taxed when Aucklanders turn on their aircon in the summer. We can only just power all of NZ now, with electric vehicles on our roads that are so shit they kill so many tourists. New Zealand is going to have to somehow get nuclear power and somehow fix and repave all the roads while we have our own people in poverty while we welcome tourists and we house and give them jobs instead. It's so bad that often there is a exodus out of NZ to Aussie because you get paid better, if your a tourist now some places in Queenstown NZ will pay you more than a Kiwi for doing the same job. Yet the employers here wonder why no kiwis want to work for them.
I love NZ the way it is, full of people from different cultures, Though I hate when one tries to act better than all the others, I don't want maoris to be on a pedestal, I don't want to give the few maori families at the top extra money for the ability to drink out of the tap at home. Yet I wouldn't mind if money went to every maori family in NZ but no It only goes to the few top families that have bloodlines back to the families that existed here when a bunch of old british skeletons lived and thought they were the only people in NZ. Just a point to note - 85% of power generated in NZ is renewable from hydro, wind, solar and geothermal.

@@chrismckellar9350 I know. Though with the grid still taxed especially in summer and then adding on all these electric vehicle charging stations if we don't upgrade the whole grid then we will most likely have a problem. The solution might be nuclear power though the downside is the waste.

@@burninghalls -The remaining 15% can be from home generation with surplus power going back to the national grid.
Don't forget there are new solar farms being established in the Northland and Waikato regions.
The next generation of solar panels are being developed that will have the ability to generate power in cloudy conditions.

The union jack, to me, represent not only this country s origin, but it also represent stability, order, and prestige. Given uk history, I'd add pride too. I rather that, than the chaotic end times disorder of the radical progressive nutjobs.

Bravo! 👏👏👏 well said! ✊ I can relate, and I agree with everything that you said. A country's flag is a symbolism today, as much as it was then, of all that the people of that Nation stand for and stand behind. It is to honor those that came before us and to remember their sacrifice so we have the freedoms that we very much do have today. Freedoms like what Butterfield's grateful for in Australia, I am grateful for in my country America. My grandfather fought in world war II crawled all the way up to the front line during the Battle of the Bulge. My father served in Vietnam and so did my uncle. I have so much to be grateful for. I do not come from what today's standard of "privilege" is. I don't agree with it and I don't see it that way.
I survived many many hardships. Everything from death to abuse, poverty, through discrimination. I could go on but that's not the point I'm trying to make. I'm extremely grateful for the freedom I have, because the circumstances that I was born into are not the circumstances I live today. I climbed up rock bottom birth odds stacked high against me and gave myself a life that I fought very hard for, a life that was literally a dream for me to have one day. A dream and a prayer I had from a very young age. It's because of the mighty hand of fate that I was lucky enough to hit the ground here., That my story is a story of victory and not of victimization.
When I look up at my flag, especially on a really good day, but even on a hard one, sometimes it still hits me.. I'm so grateful that I was given the opportunity to give myself this life. Being born in another country under the same circumstances but under very different rules and rulers, would surely have supplied a very and most definitely negative and detrimental outcome for me. I thank the men and women that made the sacrifices they did to give me this chance, I thank my ancestors too because they put up a hell of a fight for their freedoms. My privilege was all the privilege I needed, the ground beneath my feet.
