Yup. Reverb went to the dumps after they added the double tax rule. And now they increased the sellers fee to 5% from 3.5%. Reverb started out as a great idea that was "catered towards musicians". Now it's just a big money hungry company just like any other major company. Sucks.
@George Frank I've sold on Reverb but never bought anything there. That's why I wrote about the Reverb commission fee change. Don't be too quick to judge
Yeah I just got clipped for like $250 from selling an item for $1,700. It's been a week since the item was picked up and still waiting on payment to be processed to my account. Reverb can suck it.
The tax isn’t Reverbs fault. That’s imposed on them by federal and state governments. That’s why people have to pay attention when they go to the voting booth.

Interestingly, I've bought synthesis equipment and a midi controller from bigger stores. I haven't had any problems, but honestly, after selling something myself, I think I'll try to do the same.
its the same thing as buying at a store like guitar center. you gotta pay the taxes either way which is so annoying. reverb is like amazon for music gear
Dude message the seller and buy it outside of the site. Most sellers will oblige because they won’t lose 7% of their sale and up to 4% on top Of that. I bought an amp for 1575 that was listed for 1599. Would’ve paid 1750 and he would’ve got 1350 but he got as nuch as it was listed and I didn’t get taxed. Bro, work the system don’t let it work you.
I feel your pain. I would agree with your argument about double taxing the sale of used gear for which tax has already been paid on before. Some States do that with inheritance as well for $$ that had already been taxed right? To stay on subject though: Not long ago both Reverb and Ebay generally did not collect Sales Tax unless the seller's State Law required it. A few years back that all changed with a new law. Reverb (as well as Ebay and Sweetwater) are just complying with the new tax law so that they won't be breaking the law. The new law covers all internet sales here in the good ole USA. I don't know about other folks' buying habits but the new law has changed how I purchase guitar gear. I now heavily favor NEW gear in lieu of used because the value of used gear is diminished due to the sales tax. Let's say a pedal is going for $200 brand new and you find a mint condition used one for $160 with shipping included. Sounds good but it really isn't because from the apparent $40 savings you save you will need to take out approx. $13 in tax which leaves you only saving $27 net. If I'm saving less than 20% on used gear compared to new it isn't worth it because I take a RISK buying used from a private seller. It is also a poor deal for the seller that has to chip in $10-$12 for shipping just to compete with the market. So my only USED gear purchases online as of late are either for gear that is otherwise unavailable online (vintage, discontinued, etc.) OR I purchase only at my local small music store for which I don't mind forking over the double tax nearly as much since I'm a patron of that store.
I have seen sellers use unrealistically low prices on items, then charge the balance on shipping. So you only pay the tax on the low ball price. I have not read these new laws. But if a vender had any segment of their business in a state, that state could collect tax.
Yea, they used to not have tax. Then, they sent out these nice emails saying how well they've done and they deserve more... Increasing rates..etc. Since then, it's been more hit and miss as far as available items and often you don't save much money if any. But as a seller, I appreciate their discounts on shipping. Though they include the shipping into the total amount you earned.
That's weird that you had to pay the tax. I've bought 2 guitars on Reverb, one a Mint Gibson Les Paul 50s AAA, and a 2008 LP Supreme. The standard he had listed at $3000+$200 shipping(Canadian prices, and he was also located in Canada) so we worked it out to $2900+100 shipping. That's all I laid, $3000Cad. Guitar arrived, and had a couple small blemishes but was pretty much mint, and I was happy. The Supreme was listed as Excellent, and the guy drove from Montreal to my house in Toronto as he was coming here anyway for business. Of course it was not even close to mint, but any dings and scratches were easily buffed out and now it looks like new. I paid him a reduced amount(due to poorer condition, No shipping), and I didn't get any extra fees. I guess up here we don't get charged taxes on used goods on Reverb, or it comes out of the sellers end. Either way, I try to buy everything in person now, or at the very least talk to the person over the phone and get extra pics. It gives you a good idea on whether or not you can trust their description.
That's how taxes in the us work. Uncle sam takes a cut everytime money changes hands. When you sell that guitar online, they'll get the sales tax, and on and on. Best to sell in person for cash.
So messed up. I once owned a 1978 Dodge Diplomat and each year I paid property tax on that POS. Somehow we need to get Trump to stop tax on old shit, dude.

I NEVER do any actual business on Reverb for some of the reasons you stated in that upload. That is a terrible site to navigate from a customer standpoint. Won't even recognize my go-to Visa debit card for the most basic transactions despite their claim that they do take such forms of payment 😒, plus they seem a little TOO "seller-friendly" for my taste (had a particularly bad experience with one vendor whose attitude was so rotten and despicable in responding to a specific item inquiry I had that I ended up dressing him down proper via e-mail before finally leaving him behind for good 😏). The only silver lining I did find regarding Reverb is that communication between seller and buyer is much easier to deal with compared to other online sites, so much so that I mainly use it just for that purpose nowadays. In the meantime, I usually just stick to my default E-Bay site or go straight to the seller's storefront page if they have one (cut the notorious "middle man" out of Reverb entirely like I did on at least two separate occasions that I can recall 😉) to make my purchases.
Definitely not seller friendly anymore… I’d say it’s more buyer friendly now. Reverb added a mandatory tax filing requirement for all sellers who sell more than $600 a year…. Which is basically everyone…
@@everysingleguitars Really now? That said, I still wouldn't use Reverb for anything other than keeping in touch with a seller directly and maybe drop in with an occasional product review for what it's worth 🤷♂.

Tax caught you off guard? Are you in 5th grade or something? Thank God we don't have to pay sales tax on houses. Think about a $100k Escalade for example, first time they get $8k in sales tax. Say they trade it in after two years, next guy will pay $65k so that's another $5200 in sales tax. And on and on until it gets scrapped. It should be illegal, taxing something more than once, but it's not. Welcome to adulthood. 🎸. People looking for tips on buying from an online retailer don't need to hear about your trepidation about the whole idea of buying online, nor your shocked response that you would be taxed; we already know that stuff. This is more about you venting than providing useful information, therefore the "watch before you buy" warning was absurd and misleading.
If I buy something from the US or Canada. I live in Europe. The tax here is very high. I bought some valve tubes for my B3 Hammond organ from Canada. Cost me 132 dollars. I paid here in Sweden another 85 dollars in tax to get it. In America, you pay taxes to fund more wars. Here in Europe, we pay high taxes for a high standard of living. Free healthcare and Universities and many more benefits.Better to get it in person if you can.
The sales tax you pay will depend upon the state you live in. Here in Oregon there isn't any sales tax, so none is added. Online retailers are required to collect, report, and remit state and local sales taxes based on where the buyer resides. In 2018 the Supreme Court case South Dakota vs. Wayfair, Inc. led to new internet tax reform saying that states can require online out-of-state sellers to collect and remit sales tax, whether the seller is physically located in that state or not. Depending on the state, local taxes may also need to be collected and accounted for. Every state has its own rules and regulations about tax on used items. If you’re selling used items online as a business, each state has its own threshold, so no matter how much or how often you sell, you’ll want to do your research to learn the rules where you are.
I wanna buy buy this specific guitar that’s apparently a Japan only thing and looking at it online, it pops up everywhere on eBay or Reverb. I can’t really find anything about it.
As a lefty...not much choice...gotta buy sight unseen. Bought/sold close to 20 guitars on Reverb over past 10 years ....zero issues. Prefer Reverb over eBay. Tax is NOT Reverb's fault..it's the stupid law. Sweetwater is another go-to...and they now have a Reverb-like section.
I’m not a fan of online shopping for guitars in general. Especially for those expensive none-mass production guitars. Playing the instrument by hand and seeing whether you resonate with it personally is an important process for picking up the right gear IMO. You could never rely on watching a ton of videos on YT and checking the spec to know whether you pick up the right gearing. Playing guitar is pretty personal experience, not rocket science. I don’t see in whatever way the numbers/brand on the spec helps me making choices. It’s like marrying someone you chat on Tinder but never meet offline. However, it’s sad that for most of us, buying guitar online is a major method, if not the only one. That may also be the reason why we ends up trading gears frequently these days. 😉
I finally tried a purchase on Reverb. I used Pay Pal. Reverb did not skip and opportunity to suggest that I should set up an account. At the end they asserted that, I allready had an account set up and would not complete my sale unless I used it. Now they have my personal information anyway. Nope, I never set up an account. I backed out of the purchase and am monitoring pay pal. Of note: by colonial law there can not be tax between states. This seems to have changed, some way. But how does one verify where this alleged tax money goes. Done with Reverb. Chris
Yeah true makes sense. Not unless you’re from other country, and it is shipped overseas. Sellers should be clear on declaring that bid price will be subject to tax.. make it clear in description so buyers will know.
You get taxed when you make it, when you spend it, then twice when you buy a used guitar on REEEEEEEVERB. It's really crappy I think. It should say "plus 5.00% tax" . I been steady bitchin about it awhile.

EVERY SINGLE GUITARS thanks! I looked on sweetwater and saw some strats. I got my eye on one from 07. I looked at GC and saw one from 98 and one from 96. Not sure which one to grab. Have to ask for more photos for the Guitar Center ones but they were a little under a $1000 which was tempting
Get it....
Amazon was tax free too, not that long ago. Government wasnt going to let that go on too long.
Damn, didn’t think about that tax detail. Mind blown
And the guitar is used, not like they’re making a profit much
I had to pay 100 dollors xtra for taxes what the heck man
Glad I watched this, I was considering buying a brand new prs ce24 in a color I've never seen anywhere else but looks like I'm going with a used now
Well they tax it at pawn shops as-well so I don’t see your issue
Which state's tax rate is used? Buyers or sellers?
Buyer's. That makes it pretty complicated for the seller, but the law is the law.
Does this happen for reverb in the UK or is this an American problem?
People looking for tips on buying from an online retailer don't need to hear about your trepidation about the whole idea of buying online, nor your shocked response that you would be taxed; we already know that stuff. This is more about you venting than providing useful information, therefore the "watch before you buy" warning was absurd and misleading.
Sorry dude- but you are going to pay tax new or used- not reverbs fault they have to collect the tax and pay it forward to government
How many times can you say REVERB. LOL
The government's middle name is shady!

I guess you’ve never bought a used car from a car lot?
Not for myself

They are taxed also. Don't get me wrong, I don't agree with taxing items that have already been taxed either.
We’ll if you’re a full time musician you can deduct that tax for your income taxes.
Lol freal? Never knew …. 😂😂
Welcome to adulting.
I wanna buy buy this specific guitar that’s apparently a Japan only thing and looking at it online, it pops up everywhere on eBay or Reverb. I can’t really find anything about it.
Buying a guitar online is pretty sketchy. I personally would never buy a guitar I can't feel and play before I buy it
Did You Buy it?
As a lefty...not much choice...gotta buy sight unseen. Bought/sold close to 20 guitars on Reverb over past 10 years ....zero issues. Prefer Reverb over eBay. Tax is NOT Reverb's fault..it's the stupid law. Sweetwater is another go-to...and they now have a Reverb-like section.
Lol, this turned into an anti tax video. Every product is taxed
Chris
It is weird if you think about it
I wonder how many guitars have been taxed over and over again but if you sell it privately then nobody knows/cares
Yeah true makes sense. Not unless you’re from other country, and it is shipped overseas. Sellers should be clear on declaring that bid price will be subject to tax.. make it clear in description so buyers will know.
Are the guitars from reverb even good? Because they're the only things i can afford for school. So i need to know before I can try to get one
I bought on reverb before watching this, but I was safe because I only bought from the most trusted sellers
Bro the same exact thing happened to me. I was pissed. But felt the same way.
Nice strat! What model is that?
1974 Hardtail Stratocaster
Do we have to pay custom duties even after paying tax if it's brand new
My question is, what is the alternative to this?
what about the guitar? what condition?
check out how huge this guy's hands are!
Yo sell me the guitar your holding but put a white plate on it would look so much better without the black plate
Sold
I mean it sucks, but tax is tax. It's gonna happen, lol.
You still got a deal though.
Benjamin Franklin.
Welcome to America and the rest of the world. You must be new here.
Thank you Nathan for the warm embrace
you need to talk to your governor. everyone pays sales tax.
My governor sucks
weird. my tax was very reasonable, $15 on top of a $430 order. maybe i got lucky?
that's a 3.5% tax rate.......... you from Antarctica?
@@everysingleguitars yes
Perfect place to bring a guitar
@@everysingleguitars LOL
Dude you was getting a green for almost 1000 less an your moaning about 200
What r u talking about…
You get taxed when you make it, when you spend it, then twice when you buy a used guitar on REEEEEEEVERB. It's really crappy I think. It should say "plus 5.00% tax" . I been steady bitchin about it awhile.
Thats shady. I heard some mixed reviews bout reverb
Used BOSS DS1 $75 + $125 shipping
Yea right
This world in both hemispheres of the earth is inexplicable.
But... you have a nice Fender guitar, though ✊🇵🇱
