I love how you name your layers it is really good so newbs like me can follow along. A summary of the layer process a via a flow chart would be nice at the end. Not necessary but good cheat sheet.
My favourite steps are ambiance and lighting. The way you use blending modes is so smart and I'm doing studies with your techniques and process. It's really improved my art and although I've got a lot more to practise and get smoother, I can't thank you enough for the clarity of your videos. Xxxx
My search for coloring backgrounds ends up here .litterely this video is too good and will make you understand everything ..... but the views not justified....I wish I could learn more from you .
So for the value stage your trying to get a sense of what is generally darker areas vs lighter areas then later near the end you refine darker areas that have cast shadows etc and other areas that have even more lighting that was not caught in the values stage? I assume you cannot just go straight black and white to colour with overlay or soft light you have to put more blend mode for shadow and light after ?
I've learned this technique from Marc Brunet. I truly love his art process because it allows me to adjust it along the way if I changed my mind about how the lighting works. I used to start coloring with overlay once I am done with the values but I want to create a more precise flat color layer for me to select with the magic wand tool. Before I do the shadows and lighting, I have to finalize the ambiance first. because the ambiance is the overall color of the scene without the influence of light.
could u make a video how do you start and make ideas and decide on what to draw? i feel like i have tons of ideas but when i finally sit on my ipad, its gone.

Question. Why draw the values in greyscale just to go in and add shadows and lighting manually? I don’t understand
