English has just become a global language. Which is a positive in a way. It's been awesome to talk to people all over the world. As a native english speaker ofc I'm privileged in the fact I don't need to learn another language. However its also a curse because there is no cut and dry additional language to learn. Where as other nations only need learn 1 language to enter the global conversation. I have to choose out of 100s and i cant learn 100s to have the same reach.

In India we are taught english since the first day of our kindergarten and it is a compulsory subject throughout our 14 years of school. And so we do not need to join any academy to learn it. It is not just about obsession but easy communication on global perspective. But no one should feel ashamed about not being able to learn it because it is just a language.

So we have enough time to study and train for spoken and written English.

when you learn, you should also be able to enjoy what you're learning about. I think that's what's missing when they are too pressured to learn the language.
You can either use some vocabulary or phrases to use everyday until you get used to it that you don't even need to memorize it. Statements like "I am going to the toilet" or "I am going to the university" . Phrases like these actually help a lot in learning the language especially if you use it everyday.

English isnt the 'be all end all' and it should never be used as a way to determine someone's intelligence. I speak english, but my grandmother doesnt and she used to get ridiculed by people in western countries. Eventhough she doesnt speak english, she is much wiser and smarter than me. English is important but so is your native tongue and you should never be ashamed of speaking your own language.

In India, learning & speaking English is not obsession. But it's a necessity. Our whole education system is in English. All our subject books are in English (except other languages).
Its such a multi-lingual country..so English act as a barrier between whole nation. India is the second most English speaking country in the world, despite it being a foreign language.
Indians are mostly multilingual due to this reason.
But I don't think anyone should be obsessed of learning it. You can still be intelligent without knowing it. Its other thing that English makes it easier for everyone to communicate & interact globally.

my question is, why are koreans obsessed with white looking english teachers??? one of the reasons why korea's english teaching system is so bad is 100% due to how hagwons choose their teachers. just because someone is white, doesnt mean they know english. If you look at the internet comments, I bet you many of the english comments are from nonwhite people. including me. if koreans want to become more global, they need to get this fact into their heads. black teachers in korea face so much discrimination. for no reason. asian teachers can grow up their whole life in america and still no one will hire them because they are not white. if koreans want to get better at english, then stop hiring based on race. hire on credentials, actual english ability, and actual student progress. more than half of americas population is nonwhite. if you want to live here, then you need to know that. i cant tell you how many international students ive met who were surprised when they came here that not everyone is blonde and white. and they made friends will lots of different people. you miss out on connections and friendships when you are racist.
