  • Here it is, the best budget build I have ever created so far. This is my personal record and who knows, maybe someday in the future I will be able to beat it. It took me 8 months to compile all the parts to get it under $100, so I would say this was fairly difficult to do.
    Giveaway winners were announced:
    Keyboard Winner:
    fahad stc
    SSD Winner:
    katie lawrence
    GPU Winner:
    vdonov
You have until June 5th at midnight to contact me through discord for your prizes otherwise I will restream and give them away to someone else a chance at them who left a comment on the giveaway winner.
Edit: No one reached out, will restream and pick new winners.
If you have any questions about the parts specifically or how I go about getting parts like these at what prices, I will answer.
    Part List:
    Case: www.newegg.com...
If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment and if you like the content I put out, a like and subscribe helps me out a ton for my confidence because as of now, I don't know if the content I am making is useful to anyone.
Let me know any videos you would like to see in the future!
Here is my discord server link that you should leave me a message or come talk to me over voice chat for longer questions or if you are just looking for some advice/support on your computer building experience :)

That case is the same case I used back in 2014 for my first gaming PC. I actually followed Austin Evan's original "Boson" build. It did me pretty well for about a year and then once I felt confident enough to modify my PC without the need of a guide I decided to take my old OEM MB out of my old emachines and put it in my rig at the time. It was an athlon x2 220 I believe, which was miles better for gaming performance than the Athlon 5350 I was using from the Evan's guide. Just brought me back seeing that case in your video. Great video btw.

550ti = Fermi, they have a temperature limit at like 100-110 degrees celcius. 85 degrees is a normal operating temperature for those chips under load. GTX 480's and 470's without the best cooling available were hitting 100. Hell i used to have gtx 470 from gigabyte with windforce cooling and oc'ed to the limits and it was hitting 95 degrees on a warmer day.

    • @KristoferYee

Yeah, 84 degrees is high for sure, but not dangerous. The GPU is desgined to run at 100% utilisation, so the games aren't "too demanding." Nvidia state that the Maximum GPU Temperature for the 550 Ti is 100 degrees; before it would start to throttle back. The 550 Ti is based on the Fermi architecture used in the 400 series, and they were renowned for running hot.

I did this same thing at the same time you did, wow. I wanted to prove to myself and people that listen to me in my life about computers that I could build a gaming pc for near nothing. I got an HP-110fb or something like that. $30. 240GB Kingston SSD. Free. (IT was throwing it away at my college during a break). I bought a $20 phenom b94 for it. The graphic card was visiontek 7750 low profile ($36) I bought for my old Optilplex 320 I keep as sentimental value, but it would not work and then I fried the optiplex MOBO. It ran just a tad better than yours, I mean 65-75 fps in fortnite. The motherboard could not go over 4GB of RAM, so it was pretty hard to sell, so I ended up selling it for cost. I was happy I got to prove to myself that I do know what I am doing. If that MOBO would have been able to take 8GB of RAM, I would of been happy charging a premium for the computer. I couldn't in good faith sell someone a computer that was maxed out at 4GB RAM.

The 550ti wasn't overheating or anything. As per Nvidia's own specifications, which you can find on their website, the max temp they designed the card to run at is 100C. Do you want to run it at 100C all the time? Obviously no, but that means you have a 16C buffer before you reach that card's limit. And 84C isn't even that hot in general, the 1080 Founders card runs about that temp under load. And my 1080 ftw, an aftermarket card, runs between 70-80C under load depending on the game.

Yea check your local used markets. You'll be blown away at how cheap some people will sell their stuff and sometimes people will just give components away. Over the years I've got a few hyper 212 evo's with no mounting hardware for free. Just the heatsink and fan and you can buy mounting hardware for less then 5 bucks. Over the last few months I've got a few fx 8350's for $20 and its still a great little CPU. The way I look at products is that there isn't a bad one, just a bad price✌

So late to the party, but I found a guy on facebook selling his "old PC" because he was moving and just wanted it gone. Kept telling me he was a techy but couldn't give me any of the specs. Just that it had a 2GB Graphics card in it. He was asking $100 for the whole system. Was pretty skeptical because he hadn't properly mounted the case fans, the PCI slot covers were all missing and the screws for the case side panels were also missing. Ended up getting there to look at it and right away could see his "2GB graphics card" was an Asus Dual Fan GTX 1050 TI 4GB, so I bought the system on the spot. The overall specs ended being an i7-4790k with a stock cooler, ASUS H97-Plus motherboard, 3x4GB DDR3 1600MHZ, 250GB Crucial SSD, Antec 520W 80+ Bronze PSU inside an Antec 300 case with 4 case fans. He also threw in a Logitech G600 RGB mouse and a Logitech G105 gaming keyboard in with the deal.

There's decent room for upgrade with this rig too. You can upgrade the CPU to a better Phenom, get more ram, and get a decent GPU up to probably a 760 or something. Not bad at all.

  • @johnwohlheter601

i disagree on GPU temp. A old GPU under load can hit 84c and not hurt it. I have a old gtx 760 that hit 83c at 100% usage during gaming. Ran fine for the 3 years i used it. still works to this day. I was actually happy to see my new to me gtx1070 founders runs a bit cooler at a max of 77c @ 100% usage.
You could sell that computer on to some broke SOB and they would be super happy with it. but u do what ya like.

Heating issues? Spend some money on liquid metal thermal paste (Thermal Grizzly is popular when it comes to that) in replacement to the pre-applied thermal paste on the CPU and GPU. Hopefully, that will be more than enough to drop the temperatures to a considerable amount.

  • @evers6214
    @evers6214 6 лет назад +2

I own a 550ti still and wanted to comment on the temps. Those things run hot but they can take some abuse the max operating temp that gpu is 95c. Check the fan curve at 75c mine is still only spins the fan at 85% so if you lock it at %100 it might keep it from climbing to 85c. Also i did not see you remove the heatsink when u cleaned it... that card is old and the thermal paste is dried out and crusty by now (if the factory did a good job applying it to begin with). Just Replacing the old paste with arctic silver dropped my temps by 3c so might help yours too. Keep up the good work I enjoy videos like this i just put together an i5 3550 ebay build for my nephew hes running my old 550ti now 😬

Hard to say without knowing more details about your setup. For example if your CPU isn't very good GTA5 can bottleneck it first and slow down your GPU which would cause it to not work as hard therefore produce less heat. Also would not work as hard if you lowered settings far enough down and locked framerate. Is your 550ti running 100% in game?
More likely you have a better case then me and better designed cooling solution on your card. Not all were created equal mine is MSI factory overclocked model with a super cheap looking slab of aluminum for a heatsink and a single fan. I carved a hole in the side of my old case added a fan blowing on the GPU helped quite a lot. :D

I love the honesty you had by saying the PSU is sketchy and that the build isn't good enough to sell it etc.
Personally, I think you get better deals by using prebuilds, because just the case, psu, mb and cpu did cost you 52$ and IIRC the Phenom II X4 910 isn't much better than a Q6600.
Regarding the 550ti's temperature: it's max is 95°, even when new they were around 80° depending on version - and those were usually tested in cases with good thermals. Keep in mind Nvidia's Fermi wasn't exactly renown for running cool.
As for my current build (gonna put it together today):
    HP xw6600 with dual E5450 Xeons, 14gb RAM and a USB 3.0 Card: 46€
    32GB RAM Kit (8x4GB): 18€
    GTX 960 ASUS ROG Strix 2GB: 50€
    ---> 114€ excl. SSD/HDD

      I love comments like these.
I agree with you, the prebuilt will forever be the best deal, only second to theft.
I've gotten a lot of advice and input on the 550 Ti that I am forever grateful for, I appreciate you letting me know your input on it as well! I'll be doing a follow up video seeing how low I can get it's temps with new thermal paste as well as an after market cooler.
