I remember listening to these at bedtime when I was a kid. My parents said it was ok to stay up and listen as long as I was in bed. I tried to stay up for the whole show but almost always fell asleep before it was over. Hearing the creaky door intro brings back such memories. My husband used to listen to it too, on the other side of the country. Thanks for posting these, this time I can hear a whole show lol!
haha....me too. It was a little red transistor radio. I cherished it. Anyone in greater NYC area remember Jean Shepherd on WOR AM radio? He was a grand storyteller with a huge following. Came on at 10:15pm on weeknights. My transistor radio was my link to the world back then!
Sharon Holgate, me too. I enjoyed the romance of searching the dial and picking up frequencies from stations all over the eastern half of the country. (I guess AM doesn't travel over the Rockies, does it?) I'm sure that's how I discovered "CBS Radio Mystery Theater." I also had a shortwave radio and enjoyed finding broadcasts from overseas, including Moscow, South Africa and Beijing, and of course, the BBC from London.
Thank you so much for your channel and the passion and creativity (artwork) that you put into it. I greatly enjoyed this CBSMT episode, its commercials, and the bonus news from nearly 42 years ago. The latter was fascinating, as many of the issues and countries remain problematic.
Totally agree with you. Listening to the current news @ that time serves as a lesson that the same ole' issues keep recycling (or never resolve to begin with ). Totally love listening to these stories and appreciating the art work.
I am 67 years old, just old enough to remember when listening to the radio created the " Theater Of The Mind " I was thrilled that CBS aired these wonderful stories until and through the 70's. I found myself listening to these stories as opposed to watching television. I am so happy that there are over 800 stories. Sam Dann is my favorite writer. These stories are great, far better than the garbage that is often thrown together. I especially like the fact that many times you are totally surprised at the conclusion. I enjoy radio shows like the whistler. They just don't make em like this anymore. Eddie B.
EDWARD BUIST hi I'm from England and have never heard of this series but I'm hooked and strangely enough I only heard of The Whistler today literally about an hour ago and have only heard one episode. I liked ur comment and agreed with what u said as I haven't watched any telly for a week and haven't missed it all well apart from the Commonwealth Games!!! I also thought that guys comment calling u an old fart even tho he may have been joking showed no respect but that's by the by!! Anyway I just wanted u to know and again great comment!!!
@@simonmcgrath4112 @EDWARD BUIST Another old fart here (in my mid-70s). I was a small child when The Shadow was still on the air, too young to understand the episodes, and creeped out by the Shadow's voice. I didn't know about The Whistler at all until I found him on RUclips. I was a loyal weekly follower of several CBS Radio dramas in the late 1950s/early 60s but drifted away in my mid-teens and was no longer listening to AM at all by the time CBSRMT was a thing; I didn't know about it till RUclips put it in my suggestions a year or two ago. Now, of all the whole vast galaxy of radio theater, it's my favorite. EDIT: Sam Dann is very good (apart from some possible misogyny issues - that question comes up when you look at the characterizations of women in his scripts overall - just the same his scripts are well-written, suspenseful and often delivering plot twists I don't see coming). My personal favorite among CBSRMT'S writers is Elspeth Eric. I keep a separate playlist just for her.
@@dontaylor7315 hi Don, i can't believe that comment i posted was 4yrs ago and the main comment was 5yrs ago, crikey where's the time gone, yeah i no, in the past!!!!! I digress as per but great comments from all above and since writing the original comment I've listened to a plethora of brilliant radio plays from here in Blighty, usually Radio Four plays and many many more from the good ole US of A which has aired some absolute seamless classics that i now hope are historically of value to younger listeners, at least that's what i hope anyway as I'd hate to think of these- (in my opinion)- masterpieces gathering dust never to be enjoyed and actually cherished by whomever listens and is spellbound by the likes of u and I and the multitude of like minded "old farts" ha ha!!! We've passed the baton on so let them now run with it and see what journey awaits them, listening to...........The Twilight Zone, cue the music!!!
This one was especially good...touching on that fear of unreality and abandonment. I too wonder how u come up with such great photos and artwork. This one was spot on!
@Violet Femme I've wondered about those graphics for so long, and noticed questions about them so many times (questions that got no direct answers), that I'm convinced it's a secret that will remain darkly shrouded in mystery - and that's entirely appropriate given the channel's name, yes? My guess is that there's a resident in-house graphic artist/photographer.
...I think he photoshopped the "Franks" name onto the sign. Might have photoshopped the entire sign. [edit] For example, this one comes close: www.pinterest.com/pin/440789882255074579/
Congratulations on the 100th upload !! I've always wondered and wanted to know how you make those excellent title pictures, all of which suit the story wonderfully.
Hi wow yours is the oldest comment I've ever seen in any of the radio shows I listen to and that's a lot from this to The Shadow and all inbetween. Anyway take care
@Xyz Xyz I came to the comment section looking for your post, knowing there'd be one, given that you've faithfully followed Sam Dann for so long calling out each episode in which the only woman - or the most prominent woman - is portrayed as either hysterical, stupid, obtuse or just plain evil. The fact you've found so many episodes that bear you out is pretty damning for Dann. I submit, though, that you must have found some more positive aspects in his scripts - like well-written dialogue, effective plotting, well-contrived twists - or else the task of dogging him so relentlessly would be dreary work indeed. Btw when it comes to CBSRMT I have an obsession of my own: I comb the episodes for Elspeth Eric stories. They're the most nuanced, most thoughtful, least formulaic of the whole series and I have a separate playlist just for her.
Hi, she was part of the scam and she made up the blag about stopping at Frank's garage and setting him up all because of the million and a half dollars that Joe scammed off the old man
Another last-minute twist I didn't see coming. Some plausibility deficiencies here and there in the plot but why be picky? Overall the episode delivered.
The Apollo was Buick's first ever "compact" car. I'm imagining that the Buick Apollo's touted range was around 450 miles on its 21 gallon (!) tank, giving it a mileage of about 20 mpg. My hybrid Chevy Volt holds just 8.5 gallons and has a range of 435 miles. That's almost the same range on almost a third of the gas - and 14 kWh of gas-free driving.
Yeesh, somebody just ask her to look at her driver's license and see what the expiration date is... Some people. [edit] That is, if this turns out to be a sci-fi time warp story.

Yes, as they say a picture is worth a thousand words
I was naughty. I would listen to this on my transistor radio at night when I was supposed to be sleeping. I was 8.
Daniel Hayes, me too.

The opening dialogue is soooo sadly true. Then as now.
Miss this!!

Thank you for your reply. The title picture gives me a complete image of the whole story. It's an art of intelligence and genius !
Looks like a station on the old Route 66. Possibly in Arizona.
I love conjuring up all my own people in my mind. It’s wonderful.
I feel like I'm 11 years old again
Wow! Kismet. You managed to find an image that shows the same "Frank's Quality Service" as mentioned in the story.

I think the Frank info was added as well, I doesn’t look as “old” a the feast of the sign. Bu well done!
