Just defended his Olympic title at Tokyo. He is the undisputed GOAT.
Nobody has a clear winning record against him. It's ridiculous. Wang Hao beat him 3 WTTCs in a row, but they're pretty even head to head (12-11, Wang, not counting Chinese Super League or National Games). Samsonov beat him several times at the beginning stage of his career (before 2010), but they're even head to head now. Until he came along, there wasn't a player who, for stretches of time, seemed absolutely untouchable. He has won nearly every notable competition (not just Grand Slams): Asian Cup, Asian Games, Chinese National Games, Super League, Asian Championships, World Cup, WTTC, and has 20 ITTF Pro Tour Singles titles (3rd most ever). For me, he already has it, but if he wins the Olympic Singles (only notable competition left), he should get everyone's vote for the greatest we'll ever see.

I have been watching him since the days he used to lose to Ma Lin in critical matches. If there's anyone who I'd say is the epitome of Hard Work, it's Ma Long. This guy is is not the most talented out there, but he works hard and turns his weaknesses into strengths. Whatever you throw at him, no matter if it's talented Zhang Jike, Ma would learn and improvise and be better than Zhang jike.
Dude Zhang Jike and Ma Long are both hardworkers, infact that's the reason why they both got injured.
Ma long is pure machine. He is way too good and way too consistent for any potential competitors. The closet competitor that I can think of at this point is Zheng jike, but Zhang has not been playing well and suffering from injury. Fan Zhendong is too young. Xu xin is a good player but he almost always loses to Ma long in important matches. The foreigners don't even stand a chance. Ma long is going to dominate for a while.
In terms of techniques and skills, no one ever in history is better than ML. He is perfect.
No *man* can beat ML now. Only God can beat him.

+Erik Hedbäck jo, though extremely gifted, is no better than ml in terms of techs and skills. he got his time, but now is 2015: the whole sport has advanced way beyond that of his generation.
+Erik Hedbäck Waldner was probably the most creative and groundbreaking player of all time. But I think Ma Long and Zhang Jike are better because they're just as good as Waldner technically and tactically and severely outmatch him in overall athleticism.

TT Geralt no hate @ ma long but when wang hao was at his best and ma long at his best wang hao won. it was never a ma long and zhang jike contest. it was wang hao vs zhang jike. ma long is really spectacular but unfortunately he choked a lot. hope we will se a ma long vs zhang jike olympic final no matter who wins

Earlier even Xu Xin used to beat him, but nowadays he thrashes any opponent easily.
+Gustavo Castro head2head is 8-5 ML, ZJK is not wayyyy behind ML tho, as much as i dislike the guys arrogance, when he plays at his top level he can beat Ma long. when you watch all their match you will see that ML used to be stronger but after ZJK break through at wttc and olympics they were pretty much even, except ZJK is inconsistent and cant maintain his level through out the year. wttc 2015 ZJK had a shoulder injuries i think and its whats been troubling him through out this whole year as well, you have to agree that ZJK slump didn't start till this year. he was pretty fantastic last year

I would say he is better than Jan over waldner when he was a world champion. Comparing waldner and Zhang jike, waldner has the best serves and Zhang jike has the best forehands and both of them put together makes Ma Long.

i dont know if it's 1 in 10. that's more like tennis. Djokovic won 3 of 4 GS this year. you'll hardly see that in table tennis where a player wins all major tournaments in a year.
Roger Lee That's because all the top 3-4 chinese guys are really strong (not just one), and also because one playing style could be a kryptonite for the other.
Btw, Ma Long has also won most of the major tournaments this year.
If it really depended on luck then we would see players around world no. 5-6 like Ovtcharov or Mizutani beating Ma Long quite frequently. But I've never seen that happen.

+Josh Stacey That's why I like him so much, too. He's won pretty much everything important except the Olympics, and really the only player in history who can say that. I know a lot of people only care about majors, but it's like you said: he's the most consistent. He'll win the Olympics unless Fan Zhendong starts peaking next year, which could happen.

Ma Long is the best right now. Great player. But as a simple spectator and leisure player like myself I just find games of players like Xu Xin or Joo Saehyuk better to watch. Ma Long's main "weapon" is his consistency. I don't think he does any fancy returns, extreme ball placement, sudden drop shots etc etc. If he does do it it's very seldom. If you watch his games it's table tennis fundamentals brought to an extreme level of consistency. His opponent can go full offensive on him and he just answers with the counter placed at the same spots until the opponent makes an error. He's obviously the best there is right now but I just like watching more strategy and mixing it up.
Kinda like Mayweather in that he is able to return just about everything and Mayweather avoids just about all punches.
CERN WhenZergsCollide I guess you have a point there. But on that at least Ma Long fights whoever is at the opposite end of the table. I don't think he made any excuses to delay competing with Xu Xin or Fan Zhendong. I haven't heard him accuse any other table tennis player of using steroids either.

Awesome video man, keep uploading! So long as Zhang Jike gives his all, he will be better than Ma Long in all honesty. A lot of it is mental strategy, and Ma lacks there many times. Zhang will be going for a 2nd Grand Slam, whereas Ma will aim for a 1st Grand Slam this next Olympic Games. Ma Long is a super player, but I do see Zhang as the better player when it counts.

It's strange to see how much the world title has affected Ma Long, i mean he lost to Shang Kun like a week after his victory, was close to lose against Oshima and now he lost against Wang Chuqin who is only 15 years old. Seems like he's not dominating table tennis like he did before wttc 2015
+M Tordas LGL once said that it's a normal phenomenon for a player to under-perform for about 3 months after winning a major tournament. (too tired, overjoyed, lost a bit of motivation in smaller matches, etc.) But then nobody can dominate forever, so we'll have to wait and see.
