Brings a tear to my eyes, two of my all-time favorite Bass Player's together, Louis Johnson (R.I.P.) and Stanley Clarke! The look on Stanley's face watching Louis play is priceless. I'm so blessed to have met both Louis Johnson and the late great George Duke, never got to meet Stanley but he's certainly my boy.

Everyone's smiling and laughing while they play. No egos on stage. Music is not a competition. Music is and should always be a chance, an excuse, a reason, THE reason to have fun, make people have a good time, exchange notes, philosophies, ideas, walks of life, playing styles. Music is life, with its ups and downs, and as it's always better to spend life with good company, so it is with music.

I regret nothing I ever did because I'm not in a position to deceive myself that I wouldn't do it again, but I regret what I was unable to do and one of them was to see Louis Johnson perform live or meet him.
I didn't know about this jam session.
Aw, you know the deal! 4:00 they're taking us on the Mothership!
The two of them contrasting slap bass x appagiating bass! Two GIANTS of BASS

Paul Brierley's comments sting but are nonetheless worthy of consideration IMO. It seems analogous, however, to casting stones of Mozart, Bach, Handel, Beethoven, Slash, Jimi Hendrix, Stanley Jordan and countless others by assigning them to garbage heap of creativity by saying they still do the same things. Artists like Louis Johnson, Larry Graham, Sly Stone, Stanley Clarke, et. al gave us such revolutionary styles that it could appear that we had the privilege of witnessing a Renaissance in bass playing. Collectively, they advanced the state of the art in the way of the impressionists and the next cycle of advance will take some time. The march to advance starts with comments like Paul that challenge the state of the art and ushers in the next round of revolution. So, Paul, you've issued the challenge and now you and other artists must enter the arena of creativity. Prosperity awaits......

Louis is still the man to me regardless of where he is today. But you make a good point that the advancement awaits for a new generation of bass players. I mean really, think about it. How far could an inventer go with a product?

I hate having to slap. I play in a smooth jazz/R & B/Gospel combo and hate that technique. I still do it because I have to.

Learn as many techniques as you can. Some folks hated bebop when it first came out, but like any other style it's here to stay.
