    I would have to respectfully disagree Peter. GoPro do make great "vlogging" cameras. I've built my channel on mainly using the Hero 8 plus it's onboard audio and it's impressive. I understand your used to high quality compact pro level cameras with interchangeable lenses when vlogging but for new content creators, GoPro offers such good all-round performance on a budget. Thanks GoPro for helping me build my channel 👍 keep on making great vlogging focused cameras 🙂

      Agreed, the small form factor is what does it for me. I have the R6, the M50, and the ZV-1. All great cameras, but for the vlogging, I still come back to the GoPro, as much as I hate it at times due to it's "bugginess". Especially when you're trying to be more discrete, it's definitely great for those situations.

    I would advise against using SuperView mode because it stretches the 4:3 image from the sensor to 16:9, causing some unnatural distortions in the image. I prefer just recording a 4:3 video and apply a uniform fisheye correction afterwards. This not only yields more natural imagery, but also gives you more freedom in post-processing.

    • @LouisLuzuka
      @LouisLuzuka 2 года назад +2

      Can you tell me your thoughts on the 8:7 aspect ratio? I have the hero 7 and I still enjoy life but im trying to decide between getting the 11 or not because I like to film in 4:3 but I think that 8:7 might be better for vertical videos? What do you think 🤔 do you shoot 4:3 wide or something else in 4k

      Tactical dot

    • @DavidJonRandom
      @DavidJonRandom 2 года назад +9

      @@LouisLuzuka I think the 8:7 aspect ratio is amazing if you want to be able to use the same footage for both horizontal and vertical videos without cropping too much. For me, personally I cannot think of another scenario for which the 8:7 sensor is really necessary. If you already know beforehand that you only want either a horizontal or a vertical video, I would just record in that orientation in the first place.
      I use Hero 8 cameras myself, and always film in 4:3 wide at 1440p. I film at 4:3 wide because I want record the full surface of the sensor, so that the FoV is as wide as possible but without the distortion SuperView introduces. I often apply some distortion in post-production and crop the end result to 16:9. I personally prefer the way this looks over the SuperView mode (more natural distortion) and the freedom it gives in post-production.
      I primarily film at 1440p because I often need to record large amounts of video without being able to save any of it in the mean time. I have 1.4 TB of sd cards for each of these cameras, and this summer I almost ran out of free space on these cards. The 1440p and 4:3 aspect ratio feels like the perfect compromise between quality (resolution and look) and the drawbacks of using high resolutions (overheating, expensive storage, expensive computer upgrade). Viewers on RUclips hardly ever watch videos at resolutions higher than 1080p anyway.

    • @LouisLuzuka
      @LouisLuzuka 2 года назад

      @@DavidJonRandom you so bring up a valid point because unless you’re specifically needing this shot to be repurposed for social media it’s kinda redundant to film everything in 8:7 but at the same time if you specifically need that shot technically you can film it twice but flip it vertically. So no point saving it for “just in case” moments it seems lazy especially it’s hard to get the right composition if you’re always cropping in post it’s better to film it right in the first place…
      I like that, 4:3 and crop in post with de-warp filter.. but my question is! 1080p more than enough resolution to crop in? I try and film at least 2.7k but the storage eats away so much space… wow 1.4TB in micro sd do you use 256gb each or more?! I used the Sandisc extreme pro with red and black colors and gold font writing
      I do notice that when I was testing 4K60 today it chewed through my battery like crazy!!!! I might try 2.7k to find a middle ground
      Last question what is your thoughts on linear field of view because I can shoot 4:3 in linear but it’s 2.7k and 4k wide in 4:3 but I can’t do super view or linear but you say stay away from the camera doing the cropping ?

    Pete, for vlogging on a GoPro, a MUST HAVE is one of those cheap foam case things (called a windscreen or windslayer). The foam fits over the entire camera. They are $12 on Amazon and it changes the game. No need for an external mic or media mod, or blah blah. You only need that foam and it's good to go for vlogging. Try it. You'll see. (The image is still not as good as a mirrorless (obviously) but it's essentially good to go for something like RUclips vlogs.)

    5:42 - but charging batteries at higher wattage may shorten their life over time, or reduce their capacity. Usually batteries have a specific charging rate, so the advertised Anker brick may not be great for every device we have. GoPro supercharger is limited at the batteries charging limit. On the other side, charging batteries at a slower rate, will keep them longer and the capacity will remain as new for longer time.
    I've learned a lot of this from researching on how to charge RC batteries which are crazy expensive, and smart chargers offer different speeds from .5 Amps to 6Amps or more... From my experience; if I charge a battery at 6 Amps it will last way shorter running time, maybe at only 60%... but if I charge it at 1Amp it will last way longer per charge / but that would take hours and hours to charge, so is better to let them charge over night... if possible, if not, charge fast and replace often!
    Hope this helped you a bit today!

    I have a Hero 8 black, and that 10 bit color is tempting, but ultimately it’s not time to upgrade yet-especially since I don’t use them too often.
    The thing that really gets me is the upgrade cycle. Sony waited several years to release the A7S III, and even though people were sad about the wait, Sony put out the best dang camera they could. It’s actually impressive how much of a leap it is over the A7S II, whereas if Sony had released a new camera every year, it’s likely we would have been given uptick after minor uptick of new features. I wonder what would happen if other companies put out new hardware more sparingly and focused instead on long-term support and services for each release.

    The GoPro Supercharger has one USB Type-C port and one USB Type-A port. The USB Type-C port supports 15 watts (5.1 volts @ 3 amps), 16.5 watts (5.5 volts @ 3 amps), and 20 watts (12 volts @ 1.67 amps) using USB Power Delivery while the USB Type-A port can charge at 7.65 watts (5.1 volts @ 1.5 amps)

    I’m still using the hero 8 black for most of my filming on my channel, the rest is with the canon SL3 and my iPhone 13 pro. I do need to upgrade because the GoPro is starting to become unreliable when recording. But when I upgrade I’ll still need to purchase a crap ton of batteries to go with it.

    You make some very reasonable arguments for the obviously more capable equipment that you default too, instead of vlogging with the GoPro, but there is a budget ellement that might be an issue for some, and that might even be a deal breaker for GoPro as an "action Camera" after all it is a bit pricey, but being able to also vlog with an action Camera might make the expense of investment a little more acceptable for some if it serves greater utility. Lots of people are constrained to one system initially, especially new creators on a budget. GoPro might just be that camera that offers entry to this space a little more affordable than mirrorless. I am not suggesting it's affordable, but it's most definitely not R5 money. I'm certain that anyone with a passion for capture will inevitably find the limitations and eventually migrate to systems that offer more latitude and better files for post processing. I do myself love the form factor and the hands free aspect but I don't produce anywhere near the kind of content that professionals like yourself or many of the YT Regulars do, to have capture or production advice for professionals. It looks like a fantastic starter system I would love to set up a few of these and maybe a 360 cam in my buddy's shop to document his race engine development and car build. I feel like again, however, that might be something you would have some more experienced advice for. If you are ever planning on being down in The 6 and have some time for Coffee and would like to check out some F1 technology being adapted in a totally insane race car build I would be happy to drop for coffee, and get your advice.

      @@rich4716 stabilization for sure and as you begin to progress with content creation there are tones of directions to go in, but as an entry point camera it is versatile and offers a lot major upsides for solo creators on the "Go". It kind of fits for "Go" "Pros" 😆

      @bigshooter461 2 года назад

      @@rich4716 I think a distinction could be made between people who are "filming" content or "capturing" experiences. I like the opportunity to be hands free and still capture what you are participating in. It's a great fly on the wall device, there are so many applications this equipment is productive for, maybe not perfect, but very productive.

    The audio under the helmet sounded pretty good! I have to respectfully disagree. I take my GoPro with me everywhere, backpacking/MTBing/Surfing and I think vlogging on it is pretty decent without wind of course. It might not sound as amazing as a more expensive mic, but it's not bad, and it's way way easier than hauling all that extra gear, and a faster setup..
