Happy to see you're still chasing your literary dreams! I've had precious little time in the last few years to write, so I went back to a novella I wrote and did some simple editing with that, which was still gratifying in its own right. And I have a novel I got about 80,000 words into and life just got wild and I'm tired all the time, but I'm hoping to pick that one up again after I've read through everything I already have. I think that one's at least two-thirds complete, so hopefully it won't be too hard jumping back into it after a couple years' hiatus.

I can’t believe it’s been that long since you were frequently posting videos. I’ve pretty much completed a Bachelor of Creative Writing since then, and I’ve just joined the writing community on TikTok. I’ve also just recently decided on my debut novel story, and I’m working on the first draft now (unlike previous projects that I’ve worked on, I know that my writing is at a publishable level now). I love your energy and vibe, and I can’t wait to see your camp nano videos!

YAY! I just subscribed to your channel earlier today and noticed you hadn't posted in 11 months....and now you just posted an hour ago! Super cool! 😄
I am going through a couple of writing courses, one with Hayhouse and one on Skillsuccess called "Fiction Writing: Write and Publish your First Novel". It's so good. They both mentioned Scrivener, but the trial version is not working on my computer, stuck on the template part, so I was so glad you showed how it works in your videos. Waiting for support to get back to me how to fix it.
I also got the "Save the Cat! Writes a Novel" (today, lol), but didn't realize it was not by the original author of the Save the cat book, so I then also got the original Save the Cat book which I'm reading now and it is SO GOOD! I'm learning a lot that I never thought about before. Other books in my reading queue are "20 Master Plots: And how to build them" and "45 Master Characters: Mythic Models for creating original characters". I also have that book you showed - "The anatomy of Story" - haven't read it yet, but will. I was also recommended to read "The Art of Dramatic Writing" by Lajos Egri and "Creating Character Arcs" by K.M Weiland.
Since your videos are helping me, I will share a few notes I jotted down from what I learned today from my classes and from my reading...hopefully I can help you like you helped me. You might already know this but I'm going to post it anyways cause I thought these tips were just great!
1 - To have rich characters, add their opinions (5 senses: sight, smell, touch, hear, taste). For example, an alcoholic, ex-alcoholic, and someone who has never drank before, will all have differing opinions on what a bar smells like, feels like, looks like, etc., the alcoholic might be salivating, the non-drinker might not care or have distaste for the place, maybe uncomfortable, the ex-drinker might have anxieties of having alcohol within reach, etc.
2 - Openings - Character in a setting with a problem, with all 5 senses. That way the reader can really feel and understand the characters better, makes them more real.
3 - Cliffhangers. How you end each chapter, make it impossible for readers to put your book down. For example, you could end the chapter with a question the character is pondering, that the reader also desperately wants to know, maybe a group of characters are plotting something and say "here's what's going to happen next" and makes the reader want to know how that's going to happen, etc. Something to incentivize the reader to keep reading on to find out what happens next.
4 - Pacing. Speed up or slow down the reader. If you have a car chase, you want the reader flipping through the pages real quick. If characters are sitting at a table talking to each other, you want your reader to slow down and read slower. The length of paragraph and sentences matter depending on the situation. Car chase scene, sentences really short. A lot of white space on page, lots of short phrases, "Run", "Get down". For relaxed kitchen table chat, paragraphs with 7-8 lines in them, not too rushed. Not a lot of one-lined sentences. Even fast-paced thrillers have slowed down paces, but fast paced raises heart rate, excitement, stress level, excites reader.

Hey, Vivien! 😊 I always like when you make videos because you're witty and so down-to-earth. Way to go for finishing your novel outline. I wanted to do Camp NaNoWriMo, but I think I'm gonna pass this year. Still editing through my current novel. It's harder being a writer with other responsibilities (college student, parenthood, or full-time job), but it's still possible. Keep up the good work! 👍
And don't feel bad about not knowing what to say in your video. I'm in the process of making changes with my channels and a better writer than speaker myself. Hence, why I plan out often before my videos, just helps organize my complex brain...lol. 😂
