  • What was the purpose of erasing every syllable, religious belief, culture practice and even the name from your captives??? Is there something in their inheritance that the kidnappers feared. No other enslaved people in the history of man, did the conqueror erase their captives entire past.

As a little kid, I first saw Louis Gosset Jr. in the movie THE DEEP. I did not like him because the character he played was so mean. But I grew up with Louis Gosset Jr. & over the years I came to adore him. I got to see him in a Hollywood parade riding on the upper backseat of a convertable waving at the crowd. I yelled out his name & he looked in my direction & waved hello. He was pure genius in ROOTS & every bit as good in ENEMY MINE. News of his passing hit me like a baseball bat. Goodbye my friend. I'll never forget you. . .

I disagree with the poster's statement that "No other enslaved people in the history of man, did the conqueror erase their captives entire past." This very thing happened over and over - the Mongols, the Romans, the Bolsheviks and the Nazis - and some of the modern ones just went ahead and "erased" the people themselves if they didn't fit into the conqueror's "brave new world." The Nazis, for instance, identified certain groups of people who had no place in the Third Reich, and were either executed outright, or worked to death.
In this example, the overseer was an actor - and this was a movie. But - Yes, things like that did happen - and worse - all over the world and down thru time. A common punishment in the Royal Navy was "whipping thru the fleet" where the offending sailor was bound to the mast of a small boat, which was sailed thru the fleet, and given so many strokes with the "cat o' nine tails" until they had passed every ship. Usually they were whipping a corpse by the time it was done as the backbones and rib cage were showing and the sailor had died of blood loss and shock.

From reading the book I recall that when Kunta Kinte attempted to escape, was hunted down and captured he was given a choice: he could be castrated, or have half of one foot cut off. He believed that to be truly a man, a man must have sons. So he chose to lose half a foot, in order to beget sons who would in time bear witness to the wrongs of slavery.

When actual historians, and genealogists investigated Alex Haley's book(s): Roots they discovered he had no factual, historical, genealogical evidence or proof to back up his assertions that Kunta Kinte was his ancestor, and there was never any evidence or proof that such a person was brought to Maryland, or anywhere else in the American Colonies or that such a person ever existed at all. Once confronted Haley stated, "I wanted to give people a myth they could believe in". Roots is a lie.

OK-- ignore all the slave narratives and first-hand testimonials of enslaved and former beneficiaries of slavery. Because you are a time traveler, and you were there on every plantation to witness how great the slave life was. Some of you trolls showing up in this thread are seriously ill-informed. You are under-educated. You were cheated from being told the truth because your own benevolent wealthy white elites felt you could not handle it. And they were right. Emotionally and cognitively, you're not strong enough to handle the truth. I bet you still believe in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. Your culture is a complex structure of lies and deceit and you need that to maintain your delusion of superiority.
