The multiplying onions are truly generational. My family in 4th generation growing same unbroken line since early 40s. They are survivors as cold and bugs don't affect them. We use mostly as green tops thru winter and cook with bulbs and in pickles late spring. They once were staple in southern farm gardens.

It'll be fun to watch those multiply onions and how they grow compared to walking onions.
I did start some lettuces for fall last weekend. They are in the shade, on the back deck. Once sprouted, they will get sun, but be protected if we get another round of hot weather.

The idea of a whole raised bed plot is awesome. I have built a few of them around my property with lumber and it’s fun growing that way. I have several with fruit trees I keep small and add annual veggies around the trees in spring. They dry out really fast so they almost have to have automatic water in summer, but other than that they’re great.

They got good morning sun, but as the day progressed they got spotty sun in the heat of the day. As they grew I slowly moved them closer to full sun.

Fall starts are easy here in NC. I usually just plant and then sit the trays out on the porch. I water daily and the natural sunlight does its job. If expecting heavy rain, I will bring inside because I do not want the wind and heavy rain to hurt the plants. Once a little more established then I may leave them on a gentle rainy day. Once true leaves and little growth, out in the garden they go.

Those multipliers are called Welsh Onions. I have grown them for 15 years. They will provide green onions from August until February. They send flower stalks up in late winter/early spring. They do not set seed but the bees love the flowers. They also become tough. When they die back, I dig them, separate, and replant every 4-6" in August. Eat half or more of them because they are prolific multipliers and nearly impossible to kill!

My seedling philosophy is that you have to be tough to grow in Florida. As soon as they are germinated plant guys have to face the elements. I completely understand the cost I'm currently buying 15 of the 32in tall Vego Beds, the price stings bad. However right now they have a summer sale on them and on each $1000 order they take of $150. And if you sign up for the Loyalty Rewards before placing the order you accumulate cash back rewards on every purchase for future purchases. So far I've ordered 6. 4 the first order 2 on the second but with the summer sale and rewards points I only paid for 5. The trick to it is to not order much over $1000 on each order and get both their summer sale discount and you can use your cash back also towards each purchase after the first.

If you hugelkultur those future raised beds, it significantly brings down the cost of filling them and pays off big time in the long run for water retention and fungal support. I'm talking about the deep beds, mine are about waist high. I think I watered my deep raised beds once or twice this year in the spring when it was dry...come June rain is enough as the rotten wood base acts like a sponge. It takes several years to realize this benefit. Untill then, water as needed. I used live oak logs and sticks in mine...worked great gg

    • @LazyDogFarm

I like them though cause you don’t have to start from seed! Them sunflowers should do good now that it’s not as hot down there but the day length may hurt you a bit. Hopefully you can grow one 15’-20’!!

I guess you know where this is going - they are all leggy because I have to keep them further under the porch roof so rain won't knock them out of the trays. Some of the collards are over 3 inches tall and haven't put out true leaves yet.

Yes, they will store very well in a root cellar or something like that. Then you can just replant when it's warm enough.

I have a question about the blue stuff. I mixed up a 5 gallon bucket of it for my siphon mixer well i didnt get to use it because it started raining on me. So i put the lid on the mixture and went inside. Today the blue stuff is purple. I have never seen it do that before. Is it still ok to use? And what would turn it purple?

It should be just fine. Just swirl around the bucket with the nozzle to give it a good mix before watering it.

I saw the Helena measuring jug. I went to work for Helena in late 1976 at Statesboro. It was owned by people from the USA. In the 80s, the people sold out to German Bayer, AG who in turn sold out to the Japanese marketing firm Marubeni. I gracefully quit in the 80s after 10 years. I do get a retirement check of 109.00 per month. Helena never had giveaways. hahaha. Eaglegards... P.S. The history of Bayer during WW II was they made the nerve gas for the chambers. Bayer's property was confiscated after the war and divided up. Truman's democrat pal, the Sterling drug family got the logo rights for the USA and the rights to sell aspirin. During the 90s, Sterling sold the rights back to Bayer for 1 billion dollars. It's hidden about the property confiscated after both WW I and II.

So fun story these are not actually onions these are a variety of Shallot people need to stop calling them onions its like Yams vs. Sweet Potatoes. Shallots grow differently than onions. I bought some, and mine are doing great, but I almost lost it when they started flowering. I got worried, so I pulled them all out of the ground. Had to do research and found out what a shallot scape was. Now I wish I had known to cut the scape early to promote bigger bulbs. I ended up letting mine bloom. I still have giant bulbs but I wonder how much bigger they could have gotten had I known. Anyways happy gardening all
