  • While there is no way of knowing what the best portfolio is, empirical data and financial economics have fixed the problems surrounding investing. But if we’ve fixed investing, then what’s the point of financial advisors? Today we dive into this topic and reveal why financial advice is still valuable to the everyday investor. We open the episode by touching on our movies and books for the week, as well as the latest from the financial world. We then explore why, despite their failure at making predictions, experts are so important across many industries. After defining what financial advice is, co-host Benjamin Felix systematically unpacks the value that financial advisors provide as they relate to key areas including goal-setting and quantification; asset allocation; understanding your human capital and insurance needs; selecting the right financial products; and tailoring strategies to tax considerations. Later, Benjamin highlights how financial advisors can help investors overcome their biases while helping them align their investing goals with living a meaningful life. We close the episode with our Talking Sense segment, followed by the bad financial advice of the week. When so much data is available, it’s necessary to revisit the relevancy of financial advisors. Join us to hear why they continue to play such a valuable role in helping people meet their investing goals.

    I’m convinced my grandfather added a decade or more to his life by staying busy and exercising. The stubborn ww2 vet continued working and going to the gym despite having a myriad of health problems up until his final year aged 93. He also moderately indulged in vices and continued to take vacations so maybe that helps as well.

    26:39 What is a financial advice

  • @rumpelr
    @rumpelr 3 года назад +3

    Concept of enough is actually core part of achieving financial independence. I am reading Your Money or Your Life from Vicky Robin and Joe Dominguez. They are one of the pioneers of FI and their book is like a FI bible (released originaly 25 years ago). Enough is one of the core ideas. You need to find your sweet spot. A place where you have enough. More will make feel worse and less will make you feel worse. I am only in the middle of the book but so far to help you achieve this place of enough, you need to make conscious choices about your purchases (and they have steps to help you achiev this) and you need to reflect on how they make you feel and if they help you achieve your goals, if they align with your values and your purpose. This seems like the introspection and reflection that Ben is talking about.

      Coming up with your "Enough," really digging into what you want, what makes you truly happy, is one of the two best outcomes of taking a walk on the FIRE side, whether you actually engage in it or not.
      The other best outcome is learning to live below your means, which is the only to save even a single dollar for any goal.

    Hi Ben: How does the evaluation of factors based value funds, which are technically not passive index funds, fall within the 5 areas of advice? I have found that many, if not most, financial advisors embrace the “solved investment problem” by recommending only broad market index funds for a portfolio. Anything that smacks of active investing seems to be taboo nowadays. Thanks in advance, Bob

    How about engaging with a financial adviser who first & foremost helps you explore your purpose, your values, what’s important to you in life in general and how that relates to their financial situation is the measure for knowing you are dealing with the “right” financial expert….

    Made the same decision as Ben on a house, but last September. Got it for $150k under asking, amazing value spot 2 hours east of Toronto where we were renting. No other interest in it, no bidding war, but it's a great house.

    I find it so weird that they didn’t really speak on the lending question from the first card. Like the objective function of investment is lending for return but their minds seemed to focus on their nuclear/tangible interactions with lending... very cool cards! Now I want them :D!

We are looking at merch options for spring now. Maybe we need a brighter shirt option. Thanks for the feedback. Watch for the AMA with Paul Merriman May 4th.
