They used Sasha Pirovarova ( her family name is something like this) as a substitute in her absence. Yes, the 2 girls looked alike, but Gemma was just better, at a sublime level, meanwhile, Sasha was often avelable, but it was like they used her as a copy because the real deal wasn't to be reached. Let's just confront their walk on the runway and it won't be any discussion left about who was the best of the two. What I m really curious about is the reason why she stayed away from the Fashion industry for 8 years. Such a long time, for an industry that changes every 3 months ( spring-summer, cruise, fall-winter, resort + Haute Couture) and The System needed her as THE Muse for real inspiration. Does somebody know why she abruptly interrupted her career at age 20, when she was at her best?
I agree with you , Gemma is a better model than Sasha especially when it comes to runway. Sasha is a great editorial model but her walk isn’t really it imo , even though sometimes it can work well. Gemma stopped modeling at 20 because she gained weight so almost no designers wanted to work with her anymore. They treated her badly.
The real reason is why Sasha stayed long and to this day still staying in fashion industry is a simple fact of her being more artistic, more creative, in her weirdness and etc, she just surpassed Gemma in so many levels
she was dating heath ledger when he committed suicide. It left her extremely depressed she gained some weight and fashion reporters crucified her for it!! It really wasnt designers at first she still booked chanel with her weight gain!! After snotty journalists printed terrible comments about her very minute weight gain then it blew up into severe trolling. Designers probably didnt like their houses getting a bad rep for hiring the "fat girl!" It got so bad she decided to quit.!! Now there are 300 lb models on runways!! go figure!!

10:20 - ahh this was this show where Gemma got shamed for “getting fat” (I think Dior S/S 07?) I remember thinking, ‘what, if she’s fat, I must be an obese elephant.’ Nowadays if you look at models, esp Nepo baby models, they’re about the same size if not bigger! I am glad Gemma was able to return to the fashion world, even if it turned its back on her (unfairly).
