      BO's cost structure isn't optimal for hardware-rich development. They chose very slow and expensive, traditional methods and materials for New Glenn - and as a result, they can ill-afford test failures. Their whole R&D program is very much "success-oriented" from day 1, which is why they're so late, and so sluggish. But, I suppose it's Jeff's money to burn - at least as long as he's around to burn it... Should anything unfortunate happen to Jeff, BO might suddenly find itself being sold for parts - like what happened to Stratolaunch after Paul Allen died.

    • @arizona_anime_fan
      @arizona_anime_fan 21 день назад

      @@marcfray757 BO isn't built on a "build it, fail and iterate" concept. It's built on the NASA standard of test, test, test, model, model, model, test, test, test, and retest, then built it, then test some more, then launch. Part of the difference can be seen in the construction factories. SpaceX is building starship out of relatively cheap materials, so blowing one or 3 up doesn't hurt their bottom line. BO is doing costly 3d printing, and carbon composites, this makes blowing up a rocket very expensive and time consuming.
      the real problem with BO isn't that parts fail, it's that all their parts seem to fail, inconsistently. Their engines apparently blow themselves up at like a 7 per 8 engine built pace, and now we have parts of a rocket that's already built blowing up independently. this speaks of massive QC issues in BO systemically, their inability to accurately reproduce working parts is a major problem for everyone involved.

    The ESCAPADE spacecraft are part of the Venture-Class Acquisition of Dedicated and Rideshare (VADR) program and are D-class rated. They're lower priority and the program is built around taking higher risk, including flying on unproven rockets in order to keep costs down. The mission already has been delayed and even restructured because it was originally supposed to fly as a rideshare on the Psyche mission, but the delays with that forced them off and now they're on New Glenn.

    The crumple problem sounds like a pressure test mishap. The rocket passed the pressure test, then the depressurization was allowed to go too low to keep the "ball" inflated. This has always been a problem with rockets and missiles. The skin of the vehicle depends on maintaining hoop tension for structural integrity. This means its like a basketball, not enough air and it goes flat. The pressure could be provided by any gas, nitrogen comes to mind. You don't want to use pressurized air in a fuel tank. Helium is both inert and light weight but expensive and in short supply. j

      He never asks hard or even slightly controversial questions always putting the subject in a glowing light to get a return invite. He stopped reporting regularly on Space news and industry events and rarely does on-site commentary any longer with the exception of Starship launches.
